HOLY WEEK 2018

My song is love unknownMy Savior’s love to me,Love to the loveless shownThat they might lovely be.Oh, who am IThat for my sakeMy Lord should takeFrail flesh and die,My Lord should takeFrail flesh and die?

There is an old story about a French farmer who, early every morning, would go to the villagechurch, sit in a pew, and quietly gaze at thecrucifix that hung above the altar. He waseventually noticed by the parish priest. Afterseveral days the priest began to think that maybethe farmer was waiting to talk to a priest, so hewent over to the farmer and asked if he wished tospeak with him. MUSICNOTES

Thank you to our Adult Choir for their preparations andofferings of music during Lent, Holy Week, and onEaster Day. The choir will not rehearse on Wednesday,April 4, 2018. The normal schedule of rehearsals willresume on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, from6:00-7:00PM.

Additionally, the choir rehearses in music room eachSunday from 9:30-10:10AM.

Hymn Sing:An evening of fellowship and hymn singing is beingplanned by Gary Brightwell and me. Details will soonfollow.

Hymn Story: "O Jesus, I have promised" (Hymn 655,Hymnal 1982)O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou forever near me, my Master and my friend.I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

John Ernest Bode (1816-1874) has given the church oneof its most enduring hymns of Christian discipleship. Itwas so popular that Bishops in the Church of Englandwere weary of singing it and discouraged its use atconfirmations. Born in London, John Ernest Bode waseducated at both Eton and Charterhouse, as well asChrist Church, Oxford (B.A., 1837; M.A., 1840). Hisservice as a Fellow of Christ Church (1841-1847)included taking Holy Orders as deacon in 1841 andpriest, 1843. Bode served as a vicar at Westwell,Oxfordshire and Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire. A highpoint in his life was an invitation to deliver theprestigious Bampton Lectures at Oxford (1855).

The hymn has its origins in the confirmation of the poet'sdaughter and two sons in 1866. Most major hymnalshave included it since then.

The text is based on a verse in John 12 following Jesus'triumphal entry into Jerusalem and his travel toBethsaida of Galilee just before his impending passionwhen he shares with his disciples: "The hour is come,

that the Son of man should be glorified. Verily, verily, Isay unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the groundand die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forthmuch fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he thathateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am,there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, himwill my Father honor" (John 12:23-26, KJV).

Stanza two is particularly appropriate for confirmation, discouraging the ways of the world – "the sights thatdazzle, the tempting sounds I hear" – and evil influences– "my foes are ever near me, around me and within."Stanza three dissuades the confirmand from the ways ofthe flesh: to rise "above the storms of passion, themurmurs of self will."

More than fifty years after its publication, composer andhymnal editor Percy Dearmer noted its overuse in hisSongs of Praise Discussed (1933), "Bishops have beenknown to implore their clergy that this hymn should notbe sung at all the Confirmations they attend."

The Easter Triduum – The Rev. David SutcliffeWe are coming to the end of Lent. Lent ends at sundown onMaundy Thursday as we enter the Triduum. Don’t let thetechnical term throw you, you are already quite familiar withit. It is the Church’s name for the three-day observance of thedeath and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We know these daysas Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and The EasterVigil/Easter Sunday. It needs to be mentioned that, liturgically, we use the Jewish way of counting days. TheTriduum begins at sundown on Maundy Thursday and endsat dusk on Easter Day.

All of Lent has been preparation for these three days, andEaster season is a joyful celebration of what has been donefor us in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It can besaid without exaggeration, that the Triduum is the focal pointof the whole liturgical year. Therefore, these three days areconsidered the most sacred time of the year, and, during theTriduum, Christians are expected to make a special effort tocome together in worship.

The Easter Triduum is really one service that is celebratedover several days. That is why there is no final blessing ordismissal at either the Maundy Thursday or Good Fridayliturgies. The service is not over until the end of the Easterliturgy.

The Maundy Thursday liturgy, which we will celebrate at 6PMon March 29 focuses on two things: 1) the gift of love offeredto us in the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ(The Eucharist) and 2) in the giving of the new law(mandatum) that we love one another which is demonstratedin the washing of the feet. It is not appropriate to have a SederMeal at this time; not only because our brother and sister Jewsare often rightly offended by Christians appropriating thatwhich is most sacred to the Jewish faith, but also because, forChristians, the symbolic connection to Passover is found in theEaster Liturgy.

The Maundy Thursday Liturgy will lead to the stripping of theAltar, and the Watch. The Sacrament will be reserved in theChapel, where the Watch will take place. If you remember theLord’s request to his Disciples, when they were in the Gardenof Gethsemene, that they wait and watch with him, youunderstand the purpose of the Watch. Unfortunately, becausewe have to consider people’s safety these days, it probably isnot wise to have an all night watch. But the church will beopen until 9 PM, resuming at 8:00AM until the Noon GoodFriday service.

The Good Friday liturgy which will be observed at noonfocuses on the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus Christ. There isno procession as the liturgy had already begun on MaundyThursday. We hear the passion and remember how Jesussuffered and died for us. The Cross, the symbol of the Passion,is brought in and we acknowledge what Jesus has done for usby venerating the cross. Before the service, you will have beengiven a nail to place in the cross. After prayers, and anthems, and you are invited to come forward to place your nail in thecross and, if you so desire to touch or kiss the cross as a signof devotion to Our Lord. During the sermon there will be anexplanation of the significance of this act.

We then wait in quiet anticipation for the resurrection. We willbe celebrating the Resurrection of Our Lord on Easter Day at8:00 and 10:30AM. Everyone attending the 10:30AM serviceis encouraged to bring a flower cutting to church on EasterDay. If you forget, we will have extra cuttings at the back ofthe church. There will be a cross in front of the Altar withmany holes in it. During the procession, the Priest, acolytes, and Chalice bearers will place their flower cuttings in the holesin the cross, when they are finished the congregation is tocome forward and place their flowers in the cross, finally thechoir will place their flower cuttings in the holes until thewhole cross has been “flowered”. We will then proceed tocelebrate the Resurrection with as much joy and festivity aspossible.

I hope this explanation will enrich your experience of this mostholy of times.
