Definitions of Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate Research is an academic endeavor that complements and enhances the effectiveness of classroom learning. It is an active participation by faculty and students in the creation, discovery and examination of knowledge through various methods of inquiry and analysis, as established by the respective discipline (T. Kahim, Undergraduate Research Undefined, CUR Quarterly, 15, p. 187, June 1996).

Hallmarks of Undergraduate Research

“Undergraduate research is a student-faculty collaboration to examine, create and share new knowledge or works in ways commensurate with practices in the discipline.”

Hallmarks:

1. Mentoring

2. Creation (of something partially or totally novel)

3. Presentation and DisseminationHow To Develop and Administer Institutional Undergraduate Research Programs, Toufic M. Hakim, Council on Undergraduate Research, page 1.

What is Research – A 9 Step Process

1. Select a Topic (Broad subject area for investigation)

2. Select an Issue (Specific Focus of the research)

3. Formulate your Research Question (Set a direction)

4. Develop a Working Bibliography (books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, web sites etc. – before starting the working outline)

5. Develop a Working Outline (Preliminary Structure)

6. Collecting and Classifying Information – “…gathering and weighing of evidence to develop an answer to the research question. Systematic information-gathering and recording ….apply your discoveries to construct a coherent and convincing essay. The working outline provides the structure not only for collecting information but also for classifying and evaluating it..

7. Prepare a plan (arrange ideas into 3-4 arguments)

8. Write your Rough Draft

9. Edit your Final Copy
