On July 28th the Rotary Clubs within the township of Huntington are hosting a NetworkingNight at Bertucci’s Restaurant, 881 Walt Whitman Rd, Melville, NY, 11747, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.. Thisis a fantastic event and the first of many we will be having throughout the District this year. Ourfounder Paul Harris started Rotary as a Networking Club. This established freindships throughfellowship and Service Above Self followed. It is my feeling that in today’s economy, as Rotarians,we need to network and support each other more than ever so we can continue Service Above Self.I encourage you all to support this event, it is open to ALL and not limited to only Rotarians. Theseevents will be the springboard to the new “Cocktail Clubs” also known as “Next Generation Clubs”which have been very successful in other Rotary Districts throughout the U.S.

Mark your calendars accordingly for two great District Events in August. Sunday, August 8th, is theDistrict Fun Day at Brookhaven National Lab, 9:00am -2:00 pm, 2 ctr st, Upton, NY, 11973, hostedby Rocky Point Rotary Club. MULTI-DISTRICT PETS ALLIANCE

Members of the Multi-District PETS Alliance (MDPA) met at RI Headquarters on July 16-17to improve multi-district PETS worldwide by the sharing of information. By sharing, each memberin attendance has the opportunity to improve the quality of training for Club Presidents-elect. Theprogram which started in the US is in its 12th year, and the close to 100 attendees came from allover the United States, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, and Sweden. One of the founders of theprogram is the RI President Ray Klinginsmith, and he is providing the leadership to expand theprogram throughout the world.

Multi-District PETS is a method of combining districts together for more efficient andeffective training for Presidents elect by combining several districts together for their training. OurMulti-District PETS consist of Rotary District 7230, Westchester, 7250, our neighboring District inNassau County, and 7260.

This past March was our first experience with Multi-District PETS, and it was a wonderfulfew days at the Marriott in Islandia, with great speakers on various topics of interest to Presidentsin their year that began on July 1, 2010. There were a number of sessions with facilitators as well. The combination of districts gives one a better quality of presenters and the ability of participantsto interact with people in their own as well as other districts.

The MDPA affords a unique opportunity to network with other Rotarians, and listen toinspiring and motivational speeches by the RI President, President Elect, and the GeneralSecretary, past RI Directors, and many of the staff at RI Headquarters. My fellow classmate from7250 and I were entering RI Headquarters and we came into contact with RI President elect for ouryear, Kalyan Banerjee. I also had the pleasure of signing up for a Thai dinner with 15 other people, and Banerjee was there as well.

All Rotary clubs in our district will begin selecting a President for the year 2011/12. As soonas your selection is made, kindly pass along the information. The absolute deadline is December31, 2010, and the information has to be forwarded to RI by January 15, 2011 to be included in theofficial directory.

The dates for the multi-district PETS, which are mandatory for all club President Elects isMarch 18-20, 2011, and of equal importance will be the Pre-PETS. I look forward to meeting withthe 2011/12 Presidents at both of these meetings.

Yours in Rotary,Irving H. Toliver

From the DGDCornelia (Connie) Gevinski(H) [email protected]

This is the official start of my path to District Governor. First my responsibility of runningthe COPS meetings begins. I have decided to change it from the historical Saturday morning toa Monday dinner meeting September 13th. At this meeting we will try to decide upon aconvenient meeting time and place for all current Presidents to meet. This could mean wechange meeting place and time quarterly so that all will have an opportunity to attend. Ofcourse all Presidents are expected to attend the four meetings this year. This is our way ofcommunicating and assisting. So plan on attending even if Ronkonkoma is not an easy drive foryou.

The speakers at the International Convention in Montreal were as good as I expectedand stated last month. Imagine being in a hockey arena with 18,000 fellow Rotarians. It is aweinspiring. In addition to these sessions there is the Hall of Friendship. I managed to go thereevery day because of the wide range of experiences. First you get to wander through all thewonderful opportunities for service that are displayed such as water projects, literacy, etc. ThenI spent some time with my first love of Rotary, Interact. This booth was manned by Interact-orsfrom California. I learned about how they work together as a district and have monthly districtmeetings, trainings and fund raising events. This is an interesting concept for us to consider.

The International feel is in this hall, be it country groups from Korea or Zambia gatheringin the walkways to have group photos or the cheering that could be heard throughout the hallwhen a goal was made at the World Cup competition that was broadcast on a large screen TV. You could buy African cloth and jewelry to Opal jewelry and Rotary paraphernalia. It is fun towander through and see our National Awards Company to Indian companies that sell moreornate Rotary pins and jewelry.

Last but not least is the section of Fellowships that range from chess players tomotorcycle riders doctors and many more. I took special interest and joined the RotaryFriendship Exchange. I joined this group because I am willing to have Rotarians come to myhome for a visit and then I can visit them. I stopped by the International Yachting Fellowship ofRotarians. I was impressed with their objectives of: To advance international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united inthe ideals of service. To promote Rotary fellowship through cruising, yachting, racing, sailing, kayaking and other activities involving boats and boating. To promote high standards ofseamanship and abide by recognized yachting customs and etiquette on the water. To supportRotary service projects and opportunities, on and off the water. I think we should attempt toform a fleet or several fleets on Long Island. Look for a future article for more details.

We (Districts 7230, 7250 & 7260) continue to meet to plan the March PETS/SETS. It isnever too early to start considering who will be your clubs new president. In my opinion the bestmethod is to have people “come up the line” by being Secretary, Vice President and President. Then they are ready to take on this wonderful task. Have them in named by December so theycan register to join us at PETS/SETs in March.

BOAT SAFETY LECTURE AT CAMP PA QUA TUCK

Richard Pantwell, Member, Coast Guard Auxiliary in Babylon, came to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck onJune 26 to volunteer his time at the camp to talk to counselors about paddleboat and kayaksafety. Mr. Pantwell discussed the safety precautions that counselors must take when bringingspecial-needs campers onto the boats. Among the topics discussed were bringing the camperson and off the boats, identifying the needs of the crew and which tasks each should perform;and ensuring that each person on board is wearing sunscreen and life preservers.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE

Thursday to Sunday April 7-10, 2011?First, you will hear up to date information about what is happening in Rotary worldwide and locally. In our case, we will hear this directly from the President of Rotary International himself, Ray Klinginsmith, at three formal presentations. If you donʼt think this is a big deal and a coup by our District Governor Arnie Quaranta, consider that there are 532 Districts in the Rotary world, and the President of RI can only get to a few of them. He has chosen our District Conference to attend thanks to DG Arnieʼs persuasiveness! The President usually sends a PDG or Director to be his representative at all the others. You, personally, will have an opportunity to meet him, to talk to him at receptions, cocktail parties, and other informal gatherings, and ... get to shake his hand!

Second. we will have other guest speakers from outside our District who will bring information and ideas from other Districts and Zones. We are planning on our current Zone 24, Director, Ken Grabeau attending. Therewill be some other surprise guests on whom we are working. While allour guests are important and interesting, your attendance at the Conference is the most important. We will have small group discussions in which your ideas and information will be most welcome and most important.

Third, this a Multi-District Conference as we are joining with our neighboring District 7250, which includes Rotarians from Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens. This means those of you who have Rotarian friends in those clubs, will get to see them for an extended weekend. Best of all we will have an opportunity to meet new Rotarian friends from District 7250, and our own District 7260. Remember the First Object of Rotary is ... Acquaintance!!!

Donʼt wait! Send in your application now. ... more next month...

GOOD GUYS WERE WHITE HATS

I had the first experience at Rotary International Convention in Montreal in June and I cameaway “ROTARIZED”.

I share one of the many exchanges with Rotarians around the world.

At a luncheon meeting, I sat with Rotarians from Alberta, Canada. They were all wearing whitecowboy hats. The obvious question was “What’s with the white hats?”. The Rotarian said thatall the Rotarians from her District were given white hats with the instruction that they would givethem to other Rotarians from around the world that they met, with the intention of giving the hatto someone with the best reason to them the hat.

I said to the Women you are going to give me the hat. I told her about Camp Pa Qua Tuck andthat I would give the hat to a handicapped child that attended the Camp this summer, and sendher a picture of the camper and the DVD about the Camp. I got the hat and now it was my jobto get it back to Long Island without crushing it. The train ride was 11 hour from Montreal toPenn Station and then 2 hours to Speonk. I am happy to report not one wrinkle or crush markon the hat !!

At our next Moriches Rotary meeting, I wore the hat and everyone asked the same question, “What’s with the hat?”. That night, I was happy to present the white hat to our new President, togive to his son to wear to Camp Pa Qua Tuck, this summer. The only condition was he had tosend me the picture of his son wearing the shat so I could send it to Alberta, Canada. You allknow only good guys and gals attend our Camp every summer. Sou now you all know why“Good Guys Wear White Hats”. I enclose the picture that I sent to Canada.

REPORT ON HONDURAS

JULY 20, 2010

Ken Fogle (GOL RD 6630) and I met on Monday in Cleveland with the Brian Smith of theCleveland Clinic, Mimi Hable of MedWish, Tish Dahlby of Medwish and, via Skype, Dr. ChristianGilbert of ICHF (Bill Novick was supposed to join us from India but could not be contacted).

We had a very productive discussion of the past and future in Honduras. ICHF as aninstitution still seems to not understand what happened with the funding of the Honduranmissions through GOL RD 7260. Although it has been explained a number of times that thefunding was just not there after two years of funding missions to Honduras by GOL RD 7260,Dr. Gilbert and Bill still seem to be confused as to the reason for GOL RD 7260 ceasing it’ssole-sponsorship of the missions. It appears that the most significant concern that ICHF has isthat if 7260 no longer could fund Honduran missions and we went to other GOL programs tomake up the difference that this would affect the funding for other ICHF projects that werefunded by those GOL programs. I made one last effort to dissuade Dr. Gilbert of the premisethat he referred to as ‘Robbing Peter to pay Paul’. My basic point was GOL RD 7260 did nothave the resources to finance the January 2010 and March 2010 missions on their own andGOLI worked to secure the needed funding. GOL programs were solicited and funding wasfound for both missions. If a GOL program had other commitments they would not participate inour efforts (and some GOL programs actually told me they didn’t have money in their budge atthe time to help). So, I hope this issue of funding past missions is put to rest.

As for the future, I represented to Dr. Gilbert that GOL would like to see three areaaddressed as we move forward in Honduras: (1) Government support for a sustainablepediatric cardiac surgery program (2) Hospital Administrative support for a sustainable pediatriccardiac surgery program and (3) NGO support for such a program. These three areas neededto be addressed so that GOL Northeast Ohio, GOL RD 7260 and GOLI could make an informeddecision as to how to proceed. I stressed that in order to address the NGO issue it is essentialfor us to involve Rotarians and Rotary Clubs.

Dr. Gilbert, Ron Roll, and Brian Smith of the Cleveland Clinic will be visiting potentialhospitals this week to determine whether there is another hospital at which to conduct themissions. The IHHS that we have been working with for the past 2 years is no longer a partnerdue to local politics concerning a Honduran charity. They believe there are good candidates. They also will work to ascertain whether the Government will be supportive of any efforts todevelop the sustainable program. Regarding the Rotary aspect I have offered my assistanceand the assistance of Ruben to work on getting a commitment from the Honduran Rotarians.

I also brought up the issue of San Pedro Sula and working with the IHHS Hospital there. Dr. Gilbert acknowledged that this was possible but that it was very far from the Capitol. Lastly,I mentioned bringing the Ruth Paz Foundation in as a partner and they will be discussing thatrequest as well.

So, we need to wait and see the results of the meetings that Brian, Ron and Dr. Gilbertconduct this week. The July mission was canceled due to the lack of commitment from IHHSand the demands that were made by the Honduran Charity (ie. Control of funds, selection ofchildren). Dr. Gilbert said the October mission is fully-funded but did not know by whom.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope that this provides you with a goodsense as to where we stand in Honduras.

Rob Raylman

SUPPORT THE FIFTH AVENUE OF ROTARY SERVICE

Subject: Support the Fifth Avenue of Service- Rotaract Club of Stony Brook

Dear District 7260 Rotary family,

Hello. We are the executive board of Rotaract Club of Stony Brook. We have now been an active club for four years. Some of our successful projects include; raising $200 for the Gift of Life; raising $1401 for Shelter Box; collecting 4 boxes of school supplies for children in Iraq/Djibouti; volunteering weekly at St. James soup kitchen; collecting band-aids and medical supplies for Haiti disaster relief; volunteering and running NYC’s AIDS walk; and helping other leadership groups on campus spread awareness/ raise money for breast cancer research. Many of our members are also very active in International Rotary. Two of our members have just returned from a RYLA North America conference in Washington, DC.

This Rotary year we aim to increase our membership on campus along with running many more meaningful projects locally. We have already started an elaborate plan for our BIG BANG project this fall. We want to influence students on campus and infect them with the Rotaract spirit. We are planning a Volleyball-A-Thon and Basketball-A-Thon day on campus. We will encourage teams of 3-4 people to apply to play other teams for $10. Winners will be promised a movie ticket (per person in team) to Lowes Theater (near campus). We aim to fundraise at least a $100 from the number of teams that enter. Additionally, we want to also sell food at the event and raise club awareness by having our banner and club brochures out for students to take for free. We are aiming to implement this project October 2nd. Any funds raised from this event will be added to our budget. Mainly, we want to set aside around $50 to buy arts and crafts supplies because after this event, we want to encourage members to come to a hands-on project meeting, where they will make crowns for children in the Pediatrics department of Stony Brook hospital. After this, we also want to encourage students to volunteer their time at the hospital by going around and giving out these crowns to the children by making them feel like a prince/princess, taking their mind away from their suffering. This project is a BIG BANG project because it will increase our membership, help raise club fund, give our members hands-on and people to people volunteering experience LOCALLY and simply put: it will be fun!

You all are very aware from experience we are sure that in order for a club to run a successful event, they need to have a fund to use. The point of fundraising for a cause is to put enough money to run the event and make sure that you raise more than you put in. We were fortunate enough to have Rotary Club of Middle Island (our sponsoring club) and a few other clubs in our district- Rotary Club of Babylon, Port Jefferson, Smithtown,

Lindenhurst, Patchogue, and Rocky Point, to help us remain active in the past years. Their support helped us run all the events and club meetings so far. This fall, we promise to keep a strict budget for the club but we need your help again. We would like a suggested support of $50-100 from any clubs. We aim to use the fund and also make sure we raise enough from it to support our causes and keep enough for the following year.

If your club would like a program on Rotaract, or support on how you can be a sponsor for the project explained above, please e-mail us at [email protected]. Infect your youth with the Rotary spirit; fulfill the 5th avenue of service- The New Generation.

Louise Timms, District 7260-Rotaract Co-chair, from Rotary Club of Middle Island has provided us with an address. If your club is able to support the Rotaract club of Stony Brook, please send your check to
