The DLG Test Center for Technology and Farm Inputs

A tested product gives peace of mind – to you and your customers

This is what our Test Center at Groß-Umstadt does.Founded in 1885 by the engineer Max Eyth, DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft) is committed to the promotion of technical progress in agriculture. For this purpose it has tested agricultural machinery and equipment for over 100 years and farm inputs for more than 50 years.

Expertise in testing Conducting about 1,100 tests every year, the DLG Test Center for Technology and Farm Inputs is one of the leading test centres in Europe. The DLG Test Center is the only European test lab that holds the accreditation for as-sessing the usability and operational safety of technical products and inputs. Carried out to national and international standards, regulations and technical rules, our tests are driven by the requirements farmers and contractors place on the products they wish to use.Our 26 DLG test commissions are made up of farmers, scientists and recognized experts from public bodies, all working on an hon-orary basis. Without any involvement of the manufacturer, this board of testers describes the specific use of the product to be tested and this definition sets the framework for the testing scheme.

Setting standards for agricultural equipmentAs a modern service provider, we test trac-tors and loaders, agricultural machinery and implements, livestock equipment, energy generating technology, inputs as wellas forestry, municipal and grounds care equipment.

Our service profile• 1,100 technical products tested every year • 200 quality marks awarded to technical products every year• 3,500 farm inputs tested every year• 400 quality marks awarded to farm inputs every year

The DLG test servicesThe DLG Test Center for Technology and Farm Inputs has created the new DLG APPROVED quality mark which will be used from 2016. Although featuring a new design, the seal retains it traditional name and philosophy and thus the well-proven principles that underlie the internationally recognized DLG tests whose results have a major influence on the purchase decisions farmers make as they invest in agricultural machinery and inputs. Yet, the new design of the quality mark will neither affect any of the test reports published nor any quality marks awarded in the past. All of these will remain valid.

DLG APPROVED Full Test The DLG APPROVED FULL TEST quality mark is awarded to technical products that have passed a comprehensive DLG usability test. A DLG usability test is conducted to independent and recognized test criteria and provides an objective and unbiased assessment of the product and all its features considered essential by users. In the test the product is subjected to replicable conditions; in addition to that it also has to prove itself in the field. The test conditions and procedures are defined by an independent test commission and described in a test frame-work which defines the parameters for evaluation. Yet the test conditions and procedures as defined are revised on an ongoing basis so they reflect what is acknowledged as the current state of the art as well as the latest scientific fin-dings and agricultural insights and requirements. After a product has passed the test, a test report is produced and published and the quality mark is awarded to the product and will retain its validity for five years from the date of award.

DLG APPROVED on Individual Test Criteria The DLG APPROVED quality mark on Individual Test Criteria is awarded to technical products that have passed a less comprehensive DLG usability test which is carried out and evaluated to independent and approved criteria. The purpose of the test is to highlight a product’s specific innovations and key fea-tures. It either focusses on those criteria specified by the DLG Full Test frame-work or on other features and properties that make up the specific value of the product. A DLG group of experts defines the minimum standards to be applied to the product and describes the test conditions and procedures as well as the criteria by which the test results are to be evaluated. These parameters reflect the acknowledged state of the art as well as scientific findings and agricultural insights and requirements. After a product has passed the test, a test report is produced and published and the quality mark is awarded to the product and will retain its validity for five years from the date of award.

Safety tests and technical safety appraisalsDLG offers technical safety appraisals and safety tests to manufacturers who seek to obtain GS and CE marking for their products. These appraisals and tests are carried out in line with the Equipment and Product Safety Act (GPSG) and its directives (Low-voltage Directive, Machinery Directive and Outdoor Directi-ve) as well as the relevant standards (ISO, DIN, EN). As an accredited body, the DLG Test Center is entitled to award companies the law-regulated GS marking on product safety.

Certification testsThe law requires that the safety and functionality of many machines and devices must be certified by an external party before the product can be brought to market. In line with the Equipment and Product Safety Act (GPSG) including the relevant directives (e.g. low-voltage Directive, Machinery Directive or Outdoor Directive), DLG in its capacity of a multiple-accredited Test Center conducts type approval tests and OECD tests (e.g. static or dynamic tests of the cab on agricultural and construction machinery (ROPS and FOPS test), which are con-ducted according to a recognized quality assurance scheme.

Two test versions for input tests The DLG APPROVED quality mark is also awarded to farm inputs such as compound feeds, silage additives, cleaning agents, disinfectants, udder hygiene agents, animal housing disinfectants and lime fertilizers. The specifications that define quality a product are set up by the independent DLG test commissions and relate to requirements drawn from the field and the latest scientific findings.Any analyses that may become necessary are usually carried out by accredited external laboratories. The measurements and analyses made by these indepen-dent labs are assessed by the DLG experts who apply the exacting DLG stan-dards. After the product passed the test it receives the DLG APPROVED quality mark for farm inputs. Another test version is the ‘Manufacture and Product’ test version which requires the manufacturer to have its business audited by DLG in addition to subjecting its product to the test.In signing up for the DLG approval test scheme, a manufacturer commits to an impartial and long-term quality monitoring program by DLG. This entails qualified samplers taking several unannounced samples at the ma-nufacturer’s or dealer’s premises every year. The new quality mark replaces the previous DLG quality mark whilst observing individual transitional periods for individual product groups. The aim is to revise the DLG quality mark as awarded under the RAL quality assurance scheme.
