Cork’s Newest Sporting Hero Wins American Title.I spoke with Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan the day before he left for the States for his American Title fight against Jimmy ‘The Dream’ Leblanc (after his original opponent was withdrawn), telling me he was confident of winning either by knockout in the first round or certainly within the first five Speaking to Gary after the fight on Sunday morning from Boston he told me that his opponent declared to him after the fight that he couldn’t handle Spike’s power and speed, holding on so as not to allow the Corkman hurt him. Gary was declared the winner by way of his opponent’s disqualification and mounted the ropes in celebration.The Mahon man took the fight to his opponent from the off and landed a series of stinging left jabs. It was clear before the end of the opening round however that Leblanc was out of his depth, his continued holding of the Irishman already infuriating the crowd.It was more of the same in the second but a clearly frustrated O’Sullivan was satisfied by the referee’s decision to deduct a point from his opponent. Spike hammered away at the Bostonian whenever he found space but Leblanc was more interested in hugging as the fight progressed and suffered deductions on two more occasions before the bout was eventually stopped in round four. Gary will arrive at Cork airport at 12.25 today (Thursday) to what will be a rousing celebration of this true athlete’s achievement and I would encourage anyone who is a sports fan to go along and welcome home the hero who, take it from me, is going to be a World boxing phenomenon in the not too distant future. * * *As a musician I am a big fan of live music, but live music venues are few and far between these days, however Friday is live music night at ‘the meeting place’ in Douglas – The East Village Bar & Restaurant. Resident band ‘Collage’ is a six piece outfit and led by Paul O’Donnell who is head of jazz and popular music studies at UCC and the musical arrangements by this band of polished musicians will bring a nod of approval and satisfaction to those who appreciate live music. But hey, don’t take my word for it – go be amazed and check it out for yourself – Friday nights at the East Village. * * *I went to Douglas Library last week to take some pics at a story telling session for Seachtain na Gaeilge attended two classes from St. Columbas Boys school. The stories recited by story teller Sean O’Laoire and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing myself but unfortunately had to leave before the session ended. In Praise of Irish RemovalsDear editor, i would really like to commend an excellent company - irish Removals - which currently advertises with you. on a recent trip to the Uk we were doing a bit of shopping & came across some great household appliances on sale. We’ve just moved into a new house, & these appliances were priced so cheaply we couldn’t walk away without buying them. We figured that we could easily hire a van when we got back to Cork, then take the ferry back over to collect them. Unfortunately, the cost of the ferry was far steeper than we expected, never mind the expense of the van hire & the 12 hour drive over & then back again.We could see the savings we’d made on our purchases slipping away very fast!! By chance i came across the irish Removals ad in your classifieds section, & i gave them a ring to see if they could do anything for us. i have to say i was stunned by how easy they made the whole thing. They couldn’t have been more helpful & efficient. They had the whole collection organised by the end of the phone call, & it worked out far, far less expensive than doing it ourselves. never mind the hassle of the 2 days drive. All we had to do was give the collection address in the Uk, & a return delivery address back here in Cork. everything was delivered to us last week, all perfect, and i just wanted to express my delight at such a reasonable, friendly & helpful service!!

The Cost of RTEDear editor With ta1k of RTe wanting an increase in the TV License fee, one begins to compare the company management’s business sense ,with that of bankers.First of all, consider the extravagant salaries they pay out. sure, they’re cutting back some small percentage on them (thanks, in the main i should think, to that star of stars, Miriam o’Callaghan). But look for example, at Pat kenny and Gerry Ryan - €850,000, €558,ooo- it’s absolute insanity. Pat kenny was earning two and a halftimes more than the President of the United states. Gerry Ryan was earning nearly double what Barack obama gets. And in spite of their egotistical statements to the contrary no, they’re not worth it. Few people in this world are.Management at RTe must carry responsibility tor irresponsibly increasing the salaries of these two and many of their colleagues to such an extent.

Gerry Ryan was going to the wall on refusing to take a cut, and one can understand that position. He does have a signed contract. But, if the news one reads is to be believed, once again it’s the little guy who will be made to pay tor management’s excesses of which Messrs kenny and Ryan are a part- if RTe clerical staff and others way down the ladder are made to lose their jobs and the public has to pay more for their TV licenses. You might be all right, Jack, but at what cost to how many lives? Bad planning all round, lads.Let’s also look at the thousands upon thousands of euros that various RTe programnes give away as cash prizes week after week after week as well as the cost of flights offered, hotels paid for, giveaways to “whole audience”, etc. The Late Late show, Tublidy Tonight, seoige, The Afternoon show all do it, and how many other programmes.. including the radio shows? While some of those gifts, such as an overnight stay in a hotel, may be offered by sponsors, where is all the cash coming from? Who pays for all those flights and holidays?And with the number of current programmes being repeated in the same week, every week (a real money saver, that), don’t you just have to ask: who’s trying to hoodwink whom? Do they really believe that members of the public are stupid?The idea of having the government take more money from the little guy so R Te can maintain its extravagant “standards” is a bit sick making at any time, but especially now when one views the real poverty already being created by bad money management.Time to get real, lads. Time to stop acting above your station and start doing what TV owners already pay you to do---serve the public with respect.

Patrick’s Day and the coming tourist season gives the impression that the island is united and that the name of Londonderry is fully accepted by all the people hereTourism material by the Dublin based tourism authorities is promoting the north West region from Mayo to Donegal as if there is no territorial partition, yet a small image of the island has the border featured.in fact the tourism promotional material refers to the city of Londonderry and promotes a tourist trail from Westport taking in sligo, Donegal and Fermanagh and ending in what is termed Londonderry.it is no secret that many people in the six Counties do not identify with the term Londonderry and the use of it in tourism promotional material abroad is sending out a signal that the views of the nationalist people do not matter.This latest advertising campaign by Discover ireland in the British media is blatantly political in that it attempts to give the impression that the term Londonderry is now accepted throughout ireland.The truth of course is that Londonderry was never used by the majority of people in the six Counties and instead Derry was the accepted name of the city.The tourism authorities are now trying to use the name to promote the idea that there is no objection to the use of such terms but it is insensitive on their part and this campaign must be amended to take into account the views of local people living in Derry.Yours etc

School transport price hike increases pressure on parents Deirdre Clune T.D.

The Government are hitting soft targets again by forcing hard-pressed families across Cork to pay massive hikes in the cost of school transport for school children. Hundreds of families and thousands of pupils across Ireland depend on the State school transport scheme, particularly in rural areas. But massive hikes in the cost of school transport are now kicking in across the country. Families already struggling with falling incomes and widespread job losses are now facing increases in the cost of getting their children to and from school.The new fee structure which is now being imposed means that since the start of 2008:

• Fees for junior cycle pupils will have gone up from €99 to a new high of €168;

• Senior cycle fees will have increased from €153 to €300;• And family tickets have shot up from €495 to €650.

The Government is treating the school transport scheme as yet another soft target regardless of the need to protect education for the future.Fine Gael believes that the Government must look at cutting Government waste, reforming the Oireachtas, accelerating school building, encouraging businesses to create employment and reforming our tax system instead of hitting school going children yet again. As we face into what may be a prolonged economic crisis educating the next generation has never been so important. The increased school transport cost will make it more expensive for parents to get their children to and from school and make it harder for school going children.

action for the year ahead. The annual poster and slogan competition is

with the schools at present and will be adjudicated next week and the

A few years ago I came across a little book of poems called “Crossing the Threshold” by Cormac Daly. At that time Cormac was a young poet living in Kerry and trying to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. He told me he found his writing was forever evolving and seemed to almost move in front of him waiting for him to catch up to his own ideals in matters forever composing and decomposing. ‘The Gardener’ is a poem based around a walk under a starry sky with a lady named Eimear on a country road in Kerry on Valentine’s Night. The poem encompasses the area of Slibh Mish Mountains, myth and folklore namely Queen Scotia’s Grave, the Fisher King and Chucullain’s battle with the waves as recounted in the famous poem by Yeats. The poem also draws on Carl Jungs archetypes of the gardener, the fool or trickster, the hero and the wise old man that were all part of the conversation.

Over the past number of weeks many residents have been in touch with me regarding the ongoing tipping activity at the City Landfill. The main complaints have been the dreadful smell and the infestation of flies. The areas affected are as far away as Grange/ Donnybrook, Ballinlough, as well as the entire South Douglas Road. I met the Director of Service for Environment Cork City Council Mr. Gerry O’Beirne, last week to discuss the situation and find a remedy. I attach two e-mails Gerry sent to me Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th of this week.He outlines the current position, and states that the problem will be rectified by the end of this week. He also confirms that all landfill activity will cease by July of this yearI will continue to monitored the situation on behalf of local residents.

50 years promotion of the ceili sound honouredDonal Ring of the famous Donal Ring Ceili Band received the March Cork Person of the Month to mark his 50 years contribution to Ceili Music and Dance.Donal formed the band back in 1958, and since then has kept the famous Ceili sound alive in dance halls and theatres all over Ireland, Europe, USA and Canada. This Month he went to Germany for an Irish Concert for St. Patricks Weekend and was back in Cork for St. Patricks night itself in the Everyman Palace. Down through the years, the majority of the Band consisted of the Ring family, with Donals wife Brydie playing a huge part in the organisation of the Bands activities. The Donal Ring Ceili Band recorded 10 CDs over the years, and made many T.V. and Radio appearances. Their first DVD is now available. Donals love of Irish music and dance, plus his great attention to detail was very much responsible for his success and popularity said Brian Crowley M.E.P., one of the award organisers. Starting out, Donal played with his brother Michael on accordion and his late brother Jerh on double bass. Paddy Carey played saxophone with Donal from the start until his death in 1990. Later Donals children joined the band, - Mary, Dermot, Breda and Donal Jnr.Todays band is Donal, his brother Michael, Daughter Mary, his grandson Aidan and Pat ORiordan.When I started out, I paid 212 for an accordion, and 190 for my house site. But the accordion paid through hire purchase took me longer to clear. The early years were tough, but things got better and I still play that same Shand Morino accordion today said Donal Ring at the award presentation. The Shand Morino Accordion is called after Donal Rings great friend Sir Jimmy Shand M.B.E.Sixty members have gone through the band over the last 50 years, but the unique Donal Ring Ceili Band sound never changes.Donals name now goes forward for possible selection as Cork Person of the Year, at a Gala Awards Lunch on Jan 22nd next 2010, where Guest of Honour will be President Mary McAleese.

Irish Life and Lore – The Cork City CollectionThe Cork City Collection of audio recordings was commissioned by Mr. Joe Gavin, City Manager during the summer of 2008 and the work was undertaken by Maurice and Jane O’Keeffe of the Irish Life and Lore Series. This project was funded by the Cork City Council and the collection was launched at Cork City Library by Cllr Máirín Quill on 5th December 2008.The collection is comprised of recordings with 50 people, and each recording runs to approximately one hour. Some of the interviewees for the Collection are Dan Donovan, the late Charlie Hennessy, Michael Twomey, Frank Duggan, Billa O’Connell, Gretta Owens, Mon Murphy, Maeve Delaney, Sean O’Shea and Lol McNamara. Also captured was some very valuable information relating to family histories, and recorded were Ted Crosbie, Peter Barry, Maeve Fleischmann, Fred Rosehill and Mary Rohan, now in her 101st year. John A Murphy of UCC, Rosalie Moloney of St.Angela’s College, Máirín Quill, Br. Beneldus Fintan and Br. Matthew Feheney of the Presentation Brothers, and Sr. Berchmans Murphy of the Presentation Sisters were also recorded as they spoke about education in Cork and related matters. This is just to mention a few of the people the O’Keeffe’s were privileged to record and include in this unique Cork City Collection of audio recordings. The exhibition consists of 52 portraits of the participants in the Collection, together with some old photographs. Audio clippings taken from the collection may also be heard.

“I Can’t …..I Have A Bad Back”!Have you ever heard someone say “oh, i can’t do that, i have a bad back” or “my back is at me again”. Have you ever wondered what causes a “bad back” and what can be done about it?A “bad back” is usually an indication of a chronic, longstanding injury or problem that was never detected or corrected when it first began. often “bad back” sufferers will experience repeated, acute episodes. The key to avoiding these episodes is to get to source of the problem and not simply mask it with medication or fool yourself that “it will go away”.

There are several different types of tissue affected when someone complains of a “bad back” including the joints and soft tissues of the spine such as the spongy-like discs between the vertebrae, the ligaments that support and hold the spine in place, the delicate and sensitive nerve tissue and the many overlying layers of muscle that have to respond and tighten to protect the deeper intrinsic injuries.

often the cause is not a major single incident but a series of minor or micro- traumas that slowly accumulate and overtime weaken the spine and related tissues.

The normal curves of the spine are essential for shock absorption and normal biomechanical movement of our bodies. These curves can be lost or straightened over time as a result of the major and minor traumas we endure on a daily basis. This improper alignment places added stress and pressure on the joints and discs in your spine. As well, the surrounding

ligaments that support normal alignment can deform and the surrounding muscles can react because of the increased demand. These muscles are the ones that can get stiff and sore during or after our favorite activities.All of these physiological changes can irritate the delicate nerve fibers located in and around the soft tissues of the spine which then respond by sending messages of pain to our brain. The reason it keeps reoccurring is because often the underlying cause is going undetected and uncorrected. The good news is that a thorough examination from a qualified Chiropractor which may include weight-bearing (standing) x-rays of the spine will often reveal the underlying cause. Because chiropractors specialise in detecting and correcting the vertebral misalignments, they have excellent success rates at helping these chronic problems so you never again have to give that age old excuse of having a “bad back”.

Air infiltration or air leakage is one of the principle problems responsible for the loss of heat from dwellings. This heat has to be replaced in order to maintain a comfortable house temperature, making the dwelling less energy efficient and potentially reducing the value of the house when reflected in a BeR certificate.Air infiltration into a dwelling can be reduced by incorporating a porch or draught lobby into the front door area. Porches are seen as less effective from a BeR perspective than draught lobbies and are mostly ignored when measuring energy performance of a building. However, from a practical point of view they are still effective at cutting down on air infiltration around the front door area which helps prevent heat loss.A draught lobby differs from a porch in that it is situated inside the front door and is usually a heated space. From a BeR perspective, it is defined as an area measuring at least 2.0m square of two doors that forms an airlock on the main entrance to the dwelling. The door arrangement should be such that a person with a push-chair or similar is able to close the outer door before opening the inner door. Like porches, the idea of the lobby is to reduce to a minimum air leakage around the front door area and maintain a warm house. The presence of a draught lobby improves a BeR rating by approx 2 kWh/m2/yr.

now that spring is really here, well sort of, we’ll try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing. not everything in this article may apply to you or to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Dig up, divide and replant any crowded daffodil clumps which have not flowered well. Protect polyanthus flowers with black cotton if birds are attacking them.Prune or trim grey-leafed shrubs, and remove any dead growth. Plant pinks and hardy carnations, adding grit to heavy soils first. Layer shrubs such as camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons. Trim ivy on walls and fences to remove old leaves and stimulate fresh young growth. Plant evergreen shrubs any time this month.

Kitchen Garden Feed spring cabbage and sprouting broccoli with high-nitrogen fertiliser. Plant second early and maincrop potato varieties. Check raspberry canes for cane spot and other disorders, and spray with fungicide. Feed blackcurrants with high-nitrogen fertiliser or mulch with rotted manure. Prune plums and other stone fruits now their sap is rising.

The focus of this policy document is to twofold; to implement traffic calming measures at the planning and design stage of proposed housing developments and to prioritise the need for traffic calming in existing estates. This policy document is most welcome as it highlights the increasing need for adequate traffic calming measures. It is obviously vitally important that the Council is proactively involved at the design phase of new estates to ensure that developers incorporate appropriate speed control measures. However, it is equally as important that the Council are actively meeting the need for traffic calming schemes in existing estates. Residents in numerous estates in this area have been requesting the council to introduce such measures over many years. Unfortunately, to date the Council have not been responding in a favourable way to such requests. Hopefully, with this new policy document adopted by the Council, extra funding will be directed towards meeting this need.

Derelict Site in Kiltegan a Major Cause of ConcernCllr Tim Lombard

The shop in Kiltegan has been a major cause of distress for many of the residents in this area. This shop which was once at the heart of the housing estate has recently fallen into disrepair and for the last two years it has been a derelict site. Cork County Council’s Water Service Department have issued proceedings under the Derelict Site Act regarding the condition of the shop. They have been pressing the owner to make this site clean and safe and also to redevelop the structure. The Local Engineers Office now consider the shop a dangerous structure. They have employed a fencing firm to erect a fence around the shop because they believe it is a danger in its current state. This will hopefully make the structure safe as people will be unable to access the site. Long term, the Water Services Department will be pursuing the owner to ensure that the site is redeveloped and will fit with the aesthetics of the estate.

CHRIST KING STUDENTS WIN AT CORK SCHOOLS ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME AT CITIt was a lucky Friday the 13th as Students from Christ King School in Cork City picked up the prize for Best Display Stand at the Cork Schools Enterprise Programme at Cork Institute of Technology.The Cork Schools Enterprise Programme offers second level students in Cork the opportunity to set up and run their own business while still at school. Students participating on the programme take a business from the idea stage right through to completion, experiencing all the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.The Christ King Mini-Company is called “t’amio” magazine and the business is a magazine that caters for the interests of young children. Blackrock Castle Observatory Brother Guy J. Consolmagno, is an American research astronomer and planetary scientist at the Vatican Observatory. In 1989 he entered the Jesuit order, and took vows as a brother in 1991. On entry into the order, he was assigned as an astronomer to the Vatican Observatory, where he also serves as curator of the Vatican Meteorite collection, positions he has held since then. In addition to his continuing professional work in planetary science, he has also studied philosophy and theology and is a big Rory Gallagher fan. He believes in the need for science and religion to work alongside one another rather than as competing ideologies. In 2006, he said, “Religion needs science to keep it away from superstition and keep it close to reality, to protect it from creationism, which at the end of the day is a kind of paganism - it’s turning God into a nature god.”Brother Guy will speak at Blackrock Castle Observatory on March 29th at 2.30pm and on March 30th at 2.30 pm as part of the Lifelong Learning Festival.

Local residents request closure of walkways on Rochestown Road and GrangeCllr. Deirdre FordeRochestown: Residents of Thornbury Heights and Thornbury View, Rochestown have submitted a petition to Council requesting the closure of a walkway between Manor Close and Manor Avenue on Rochestown Road as it facilitates anti-social behaviour. There has been some criminal damage to private property and cars.The Assistant engineer has no objection to the closure of the walkway as there is evidence of anti-social behaviour there. if the walkway is closed gated access would have to be maintained due to services within the laneway.Grange: The Grange erin Residents Association have also submitted a petition to Council requesting the closure of a walkway between Grange erin & shamrock Lawn as it facilitates anti-social behaviour. Douglas Gardai have met residents on several occasions over the past two years about the gathering of youths in the area engaging in alcohol and drug abuse. The Assistant engineer does not recommend the closure of this walkway as he believes it would have no effect and could possibly provide greater protection for anti-social behaviour. To reduce the occurrences of anti-social behaviour at this location, it would be proposed to clean up the area and remove any overgrown vegetation. Gardai say that Community Policing patrols the area at weekends and holiday periods.

We have just completed our very successful log on and learn computer course in Douglas community school .great celebration as the 12 senior students were presented with a certificate on completion of course, and the boys also received a cert we cannot thank them enough for helping our seniors achieve their dreams by becoming computer friendly; we had a wonderful teacher Aileen Goulding who put so much work into organising the class each week .and the good news is there is another term starting on 18th march .there is also a class in the library for our members sponsored by VeC Martina is the tutor and she is doing a great job .also a second term starting in the library.Garda Tony Davis gave a very informative talk to our seniors about security and safety in the home ,he told us 60 per cent of burglaries take place between hours of 8am to 8 pm also people be a good neighbour and report suspicious behaviour .i took the names of those interested in personal alarms ,i will get application forms for you ,if anyone needs one let me know .we are very lucky here in Douglas local community school ,library ,Garda ,etc all giving of their time to help and interact with our senior community every Tuesday afternoon we will invite someone to give a talk on topics that affect our everyday life 24th March Mary Creedon is giving a talk on CPR and also on Defibrillators, who knows we may need to use one some day. hi all, good news,We have a new home!!!! Niki (Niki’s dance studio) has offered us the use of her premises which is in the Donnybrook Mills , opposite Breen’s garage, from 5-7pm on Friday nights until we have our premises sorted!!! We are so grateful. Members who attended a meeting there on Saturday last voted to increase the weekly dues to €2.50 in order to cover the cost of hiring the hall. So as of this coming Friday, we will meet there from 5-7pm. This means we can now take new members, so anyone interested come along on Friday.There is huge excitement about our talent show ‘DYA Idol’, which will go ahead on the 3rd April in the GAA club (not the 27th as previously stated). A huge thanks to the committee for letting us use the venue for this fundraiser. We have around 10 acts for the night plus a few guest acts and hope to have a few more by next week, the categories are-music, dance, art, drama and song.We will be looking for raffle prizes for the night, if anyone could help us out with that we would be very grateful. All profits we make will go towards the club funds. Tickets will be priced at €5 for students, €7.50 for adults and will be available on the door. The author of MRS WHIPPY, Cecelia Ahern wrote her fist novel, PS I Love You, aged just 21. They beat st.Annes 6-3 at Crosshaven to book their final spot this coming sunday. The intermediate side lost 5-4 to st. Anne’s at a very well prepared Majestic course. Chris McCarthy and Gary o’sullivan won their foursomes match at the first extra hole with Chris chipping in from off the green. Frank Bruen and John Calnan were involved in another tight game and Frank sunk a long putt at the last to ensure victory. That meant they lead 2-1 going into the singles. However, st. Anne’s came back strong and took four singles wins out of six. That sets up a final match with st stephens on sunday. Chris McCarthy and Richard Jordan were the only winners in the singles. College Corinthians AFCA busy weekend of action with our Under 12 & Under 16 Premier sides maintaining their league challenge with comfortable victories, there was disappointment however for our Under 11 Premier squad as after a brave effort they bowed out of the national Cup at the quarter final stage going down 3-0 to a very strong Cherry orchard side. it was also great to see our Under 15 “A” side pick up their second win in a row as they got the better of Passage.Under 12Corinthian Boys 6 Blarney Utd. 0Corinthians got back on the winning trail and remain on top of the Under 12 Premier league after this latest victory over Blarney Utd. Grangevale AFC NewsLast May Grangevale were crowned champions of AUL 3 and now occupy top spot in AUL 2 as the club is on the threshold of winning back-to-back league titles. The current crop of players is recognised as the clubs golden generation and integral to their success has been the outstanding contribution of star goal keeper Gary Aherne. Aherne is a product of the Douglas Hall academy having played with them from under age right through to Munster senior League. Two years ago he signed for Grangevale and has been a pillar in the side ever since. earlier this month Aherne was a member of the Cork AUL squad that won the oscar Traynor Cup for the first time since 1966. This is a great honour for Grangevale and worthy recognition for a great character and footballer.

Last weekend was an important fundraising time for Grangevale, and its members wish to express gratitude for the local support given to this famous club at the annual church gate collection annual table quiz held at The Grange Bar. in particular, Grangevale wish to thank Declan o’sullivan who doubled up as quiz master and D.J. on the night. once again Douglas Hall A.F.C. were very supportive with several of their players and committee members in attendance at the quiz and this was very much appreciated. Senior LeagueMayfield Utd 2 –v- Tramore Ath 1Tramore were very unlucky not to get a share of the points at Mayfield. Mayfield went ahead midway through the 1st hald and stephen Herlihy equalised with a close range header. Mayfield again took the lead early in the 2nd hald and had to withstand tremendous Tramore Ath pressure for the rest of the 2nd half. Colm o’Callaghan, Thomas Morgan and Terry o’Connell tried their best for ken Mayes side.

Douglas Hall AFCFollowing another busy weekend, ‘Hall teams have kept themselves well in the hunt in all three adult leagues, following a series of unbeaten fixtures. The seniors were 2-1 winners over everton in the league on saturday afternoon. They were the better side throughout, but a late everton rally meant that the ‘Hall needed to defend stoutly to take all three league points. Gerard o’Donovan and Joe Mcsorley from the penalty spot were our scorers. The MsL Juniors had two matches and picked up four more league points. on Tuesday evening, they were held 0-0 by Mayfield Utd in a very tense match. They followed this with a single goal victory over Ringmahon Rangers away from home on saturday afternoon. The vital winning goal was scored by steve Barry, while nicky McCarthy kept clean sheets in both matches. The AUL Juniors were decisive 4-1 winners over Greenwood in the league on Friday night. They trailed 1-0 at the interval, but second half goals from Rory o’sullivan, Brendan Crowne, Alan McCarthy and kieran olliffe. This keeps the team very well involved in the league, with a couple of really vital fixtures coming up in the next few weeks. The Youths had a smashing 4-3 penalty win over Ringmahon Rangers in the Murphy Youths Cup at the weekend, following a ding-dong 4-4 draw after extra time. The ‘Hall trailed a couple of times, scoring the equaliser in the last minute of extra time and then notching the win with excellent penalties. The Under 17s were most unlucky to be defeated 4-0, in a result which greatly flattered Greeenwood. The ‘Hall were well involved, and the score was 0-0 with 10 minutes to go.

Evergreen FCU-12 First DivisionEvergreen 1 ; Avondale Utd. 2AVONDALE UNITED made it two in a-row winning visits to Deerpark in this enjoyable lunchtime saturday kick-off at the Turner’s Cross venue. The visitors won by the same score last season and for large chunks of the opening half, looked like winning more comfortably on this occasion. United pinned the home team in their own half from early on, and but for the commanding Cian Haines in goal, the outstanding olan Murphy in central defense, the indomitable Tim Murphy in the centre of the park and the tireless eric Compagno, evergreen would certainly have found themselves further behind at the interval. John Cotter and Jack Canning tested Haines from outside the area before Canning put Avondale in front on 19 minutes. Captain Ben kendellan played Canning through the centre and with Haines advancing, the centre-forward lashed the ball into the top right-hand corner from 20 yards. evergreen seldom troubled nolan in the first-half, but began the second in determined mood, scoring within eight minutes and looking a transformed side from the first 30 minutes. Compagno joined the attack on the edge of the area to pass square to ian Fitzgibbon, whose brother Roy stars with the U-13 team, to scoop the ball first-time into the top corner. in the 43rd minute Avondale substitute Jack Murphy made an immediate impression on his introduction to bring out the best in Haines with a well-struck shot which the keeper did well to hold. The visitors visibly gained in confidence as the half progressed and scored the decisive winning goal with twelve minutes remaining. The home defense had difficulty clearing allowing Jack sheehan to drill the ball high into the top right-hand corner giving Haines no chance. Jason Hooley had evergreen’s best opportunity in the 55th minute, shooting straight at nolan after Timmy Murphy combined with his namesake olan. Home manager Dave Brady expressed delight with his team’s performance considering the number of absentees, with worthwhile contributions also from young full-back ethan Walsh and defender Jamie Murphy, along with the front pair of Hooley and keith Barrett. G.A.A. FOCUSSnippets from the Local and National SceneBy Pat HarringtonI believe there is a sea-change occurring throughout the Cork County G.A.A. Senior and intermediate clubs are playing their part but it is being fuelled by the junior clubs who, it appears are resentful at being ignored by the Cork County Board. Shame on the high-profile senior clubs who consistently sat on the fence and refused to participate. At the very least meetings should have taken place to allow members to air their views. The difficulty at County Board level in the past was that clubs were not encouraged to express their feelings and have failed to stand up to the executive.There has been a lack of support and cooperation between the clubs with some time past; the urban / rural divide is so obvious. This apparent uprising has been likened by some of the media people to the Berlin Wall. The language used in some cases has being somewhat over the top. Cork needs serious changes if it is to compete at the highest level and hopefully this is an area that will be looked at. The Board needs to talk – and listen to the grassroots who are more knowledgeable than a board that has lost touch with reality.The County Board chairman has been pontificating about Rule 59 as if it were the Koran of the G.A.A. One delegate described Rule 59 as a guide and not the law. One hopes that all this will lead to more transparency and will get rid of this them and us mentality. The Board should listen as a change is imminent now that Gerald McCarthy is gone.

They have used Gerald and sadly the man behind this whole situation, Frank Murphy has remained mute since the dispute entered the public domain. Croke Park should ask serious questions of the Board and demand comprehensive answers. Gaelic Games have been seriously injured and the cracks will nor be easily papered over.E.G.M.I attended the recent Douglas E.G.M. in relation to the Cork hurling impasse. Present on the night were registered Douglas members who originated from different counties, e.g. Kerry, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and Clare. One wonders how the Kerry lads voted, as knowing the rogues there would be method to their madness. Of course they would prefer the strike to be finished with and for the Cork footballers to compete in the Munster championship. The men from the Kingdom would relish a good challenge. They would respect Cork but they certainly wouldn’t fear them. Regarding the other counties they would favour their chances against a weakened Cork team.CastleknockSetanta Ireland recently ran a programme featuring the Castleknock club, which by my understanding came into being in the ‘90s at a time when the area was expanding and the existing clubs were unable to cater for the increasing numbers. I believe they are playing on council pitches at present with containers for dressing rooms and no showers or running water.
