Dear readers:I think many of our members are happy that all the fall activities have started up again because there are a lot of things going on almost every day at the club. We enjoy each others company and we are very fortunate that there are so many volunteers to keep everything running smoothly. Some of our special event organizers have been busy too:• Emmy Diamond is organizing an Open House on November 4th which includes another

paint party. This was a lot of fun the first time and you don’t have to be a great artist to come up with a beautiful painting (details on page 7).

• The DCC Auxiliary is hosting the annual Children’s St. Nick Party on December 3. This is a very popular event. Register your kids early to avoid disappointment.

• The Windmills have a few events coming up on their Thursday afternoons: A Halloween party, a “Hutspot” event and of course the Sinterklaas visit and the annual Christmas dinner (details on page 6).

• Our Scandinavian friends are preparing for their annual Christmas Market (details on page 16). Our knitting club and our sewing club will have a variety of items for sale at that event.

We hope you can join us for these special events and we are looking forward to an exciting fall and winter season at the Club.

Senior JokeAn elderly man was having hearing problems and went to see a specialist. The doctor fitted him with ear aides that brought his hearing to full strength. After a few weeks the man went back to make sure his new equipment was working properly. "It all seems to be working perfect" the specialist said. "Your family should be delighted you can hear so well"."Oh no" the man responded. " I have not told anyone of them. I just sit quietly and listen carefully. I've changed my will four times!"

ZUMBA GOLD - SIT AND BE FIT◦ Well, well, well! We are certainly pleased with the turnout

for Sit and Be Fit. Way to go Ladies and Gent! We are going to miss Sept 28 as the General Meeting will be held in the Hall but will resume the week after.

◦ Zumba was also well attended. We will start slow and then continue with additional programs.

WELBERG BELLOn August 31 Frank Stolk introduced DCC members to Angelo Somers and his wife Hanneke Somers, from the town of Welberg. Angelo is the main reason that we have the Welberg Bell in Edmonton. Frank & Riek met him in Steenbergen and also in his home in Welberg, were he lives just 200 yards from the Welberg monument. Angelo and Hanneke were invited guest by the S.A.L.H. Regiment in Edmonton. Angelo gave us an insight on how the gift of the bell for the S.A.L.H regiment became a reality. Angelo was supposed to come with the Dutch Delegation of the Mayors of Steenbergen and Bergen op Zoom last year but due to illness was not able too. It was an honour to meet this remarkable couple, and learn about their enthusiasm for the continuous drive to celebrate the liberation of Holland and especially the town of Welberg by the Canadians.

Updates from the Dutch Canadian Business Club:

Edmonton Economic Development shared their visit report with DCBC on their visit to the Netherlands. The visit resulted in promising connections and potential business developments, both for Edmonton region businesses as well as Dutch businesses.

August 12On August 12 we had a great meeting with Ted Jan Bloemen and his wife Marlinde.Ted Jan Bloemen (born 16 August 1986) is a Dutch-born long track speed skater who has skated both for the Netherlands as well as for Canada since 2014. Ted Jan primarily competes in the long-distance events as well as the team pursuit event. He is the current world record holder for the 10,000 m event setting a time of 12:36.30 in Salt Lake City in November 2015. Bloemen won a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2015 World Championships in his birth country of the Netherlands. He was also Dutch champion all round in 2012. He is currently training hard for the upcoming skating season and the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Ted Jan is married to Marlinde Kraaijeveld and is coached by Bart Schouten. Ted Jan talked about his career, training program and highlighted some differences between skating in the Netherlands and Canada. Marlinde showcased an interesting perspective on what it is like to be married to a speed skater! There were lots of questions asked and Ted Jan and Marlinde both took turns answering the questions.

It was a great meeting with 25 attendees.

You can find a very nice article about Ted Jan on CBC.Ca:http://www.cbc.ca/playersvoice/entry/speed-skater-ted-jan-bloemen-putting-world-on-notice-the-canadian-way

Edith’s joke of the month

DCBC News continued ……September 9:The Dutch Canadian Business Club was present at Holland Day in Spruce Meadows.  The morning was filled with interesting presentations in Ted Talk style and the event was titled :  “Ned Talk: Jumping to energy 2.0”. The program is on line at www.thefutureeconomy.ca

The ‘Jumping to Energy 2.0‘ event consisted of 5 powerful and inspiring 10-minute talks by renowned Dutch and Canadian leaders on the energy transition towards a decarbonized economy. These high level presentations focused on innovation and were a strong call to action highlighting collaboration opportunities between The Netherlands and Canada. An interactive panel discussion followed the presentations and gave audience members an opportunity to share comments and ask the experts questions. This event was organized in partnership with the Consulate-General of the Netherlands.

September 19Thanks to Klaas Rodenburg for helping to set up a meeting on September 19 with Wade Carson and Andrew Czarnietski from Serious Labs. Serious Labs is a Canadian Company based in Edmonton and is specialized in virtual reality and has developed a crane simulator for Mammoet. Developing competencies in virtual and realistic environment and providing instant feedback is more and more applied in the business world and the crane simulator was a great example of this application. In the virtual reality Serious Labs is one of the bigger players around the globe, something we can be proud of! The 30 people attending were all able to play with the virtual crane and lift a few blocks.

Willem Langenberg presented a project where he and his team are working on reuse of heat from the Earth. They are working with the town of Devon on reusing an abandoned water injection well at the Leduc#1 Energy Discovery Centre to generate heat for the facility. We will watch the progress of this project closely.

THE FACTS ON TRANS FATSsource heartenedstroke.ca

The federal government has announced legislation to eliminate industrially produced trans fats from all foods sold in Canada. How will this affect our food supply and our health? Heart & Stroke registered dietitian Carol Dombrow provides some answers. What are trans fats and where are they found?Trans fats are a type of fat found in some foods. Artificial trans fat is made when hydrogen is added to a liquid vegetable oil to make it more solid. Trans fats can be found in commercially baked and fried foods made with vegetable shortening, such as fries and donuts. It’s also in hard stick margarine and shortening and some snack and convenience foods. When you see “partially hydrogenated oils” on the label of a processed food, that means it contains trans fats. Small amounts of naturally occurring trans fats can be found in some foods such as dairy products, beef and lamb, and some oils. How do they affect our health?Trans fats can increase your risk of heart disease. They increase your “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and decrease “good” cholesterol (HDL), fostering the buildup of fatty deposits that can clog your blood vessels and lead to heart attack. Why is a ban necessary? The food industry was given several years to voluntarily remove trans fats from products. Although levels have decreased, many foods still contain trans fats. Certain categories of foods such as baked goods, dairy-free cheeses, frosting, coffee whiteners, lard or shortening, cookies, biscuits, scones and refrigerated doughs do not meet the voluntary targets for trans fats. Some of these foods are consumed more often by children and other vulnerable populations. Only a ban will ensure that all industrially produced trans fats are effectively removed from the Canadian food supply.

Dating Ads for Seniors, found in A Florida Newspaper  'The Villages' (a senior retirement community) Dating Ads

You can say what you want about Florida, but you never hear of anyone retiring and moving north.

PRINSJESDAG 2018 speech from the throne The king made his traditional speech and the finance minister presented the traditional suitcase to parliament. This is an assessment of the caretaker government’s spending plans for 2018. Viewers of the television quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? will be familiar with the scene in which the presenter dangles a cheque for several thousand pounds under the contestant’s nose for a few seconds, then theatrically whisks it away and proclaims: ‘But we don’t want to give you that!’ Because there are bigger prizes still to be won. This year’s Dutch budget felt a bit like that. For the first time in years the government has the luxury of money to spend: a €2.9bn budget surplus in 2017, predicted to soar past €10bn by 2021. In the words of the king, the Netherlands currently boasts a ‘flourishing economy’ and ‘healthy coffers’. Yet the spending plans announced on Prinsjesdag were notably restrained. Opposition politicians complained of a missed opportunity to rebound from the years of austerity, but nobody was really surprised. A new government is expected to take office within the next few weeks, and the outgoing caretaker administration is bound by the convention that it should refrain from making substantial policy decisions while its successor is being formed. There is also the new diktat of the houdbaarheidssaldo, which requires governments to future-proof their plans by calculating how much they need to keep back for long-term commitments such as healthcare. Once this has been factored in the amount left over is a more modest €1.7bn.The outgoing coalition managed to secure the new team’s blessing for a number of small outlays: €435 mln for the elderly care sector, €270 mln to meet the pay demands of primary school teachers and €425 mln to ease the plight of pensioners and welfare dependents. Politicians of all stripes agree that people at the lower end of the income scale should be the first to benefit after bearing the brunt of the recession, but the projected rise of 0.6% in disposable income is a small return on an economy growing by 3.3% a year. For many people rising living costs, from the price of apples to the new excess charge for health insurance of €400, will quickly swallow it up. More money is also promised for healthcare, defence and tackling the challenges of climate change, but the details of these will have to wait until the new government takes office. For the same reason the annual budget debate (Algemene Politieke Beschouwingen) was postponed and will now be combined with the forthcoming debate on the new cabinet’s policy programme. Only then will we learn who will be getting the major prizes in 2018. What was announced on September 18, 2017:

Total government income €285bn, total expenditure €277bn Budget surplus to reach 0.8% of GDP National debt to fall to 53.7% of GDP Economic growth will be 2.5%, compared with 3.3% this year On average people will have 0.6% more to spend, those in jobs will notice a 0.7% rise, those on benefits 0.3%. Unemployment will decline by 50,000 to 390,000 €425m to repair spending power of pensioners and benefit claimants €160m extra spending on security and public safety €435m extra for nursing homes a year plus a further €130 for new staff €270m for primary school teacher’s pay €25m extra for the food safety board NWA €75m extra for the tax office to solve its organisational issues Own risk element in health insurance to rise from €385 to €400 a year Health benefits will rise by an average €130 a year

NEWS FROM THE NETHERLANDS

The Dutch economic machine is roaring, government or not.

As the caretaker government of Prime Minister Mark Rutte unveiled its 2018 budget the country is growing at its fastest clip in a decade. With a new government yet to be formed more than 185 days after the Dutch general elections in March -- the second-longest such period since World War II -- many see the strong performance as an indication that systems put in place after Europe’s debt crisis in 2008 are helping shelter the country from the vagaries of internat ional events and pol i t ica l uncertainty at home. Trade concerns after the election of Donald Trump in the U.S., the Brexit vote in the U.K. and uncertainty over the vote in France barely made a dent on the Dutch economy, which expanded 1.5 percent in the second quarter compared with the three previous months, beating economist estimates. ING, ABN Amro Group NV and Rabobank UA have all raised their growth forecasts for the year, expecting  an expansion of more than 3 percent. If the three largest Dutch banks are right, economic growth in the Netherlands this year would be higher than in France, Italy, Spain, Germany and the euro-area as a whole, according to forecasts. “After some difficult years, we have a thriving economy and a healthy treasure chest,” King Willem-Alexander said in a speech in the Hague, adding  that the country is in a much better position than at the start of Rutte’s second cabinet in 2012. He pointed out, however, that some people are being left behind and not gaining from the rebound. The revival of the Dutch economy is real, and the king attributed it to the “adaptability, hard work and resilience of the Dutch people.” While its politicians struggle to find common ground, the Netherlands’s economic machine is chugging along. Raising the pension age and trimming health-care benefits have helped put the Netherlands ahead of other European Union countries in terms of age-proofing the economy.
