used to just make? – Hats, shoes, clothes, homes, etc were made by

hand!– 1700’s people discovered how to build machines

that wove clothing-now people can buy cloth instead of making it!

• Industry-all of the businesses that make one kind of product or provide one type of service

• Maine-Timber-paper• New Jersey-Chemical used in shampoos and

conditioners• Pennsylvania- Make chocolate

Children • Children HAD to work in factories!!• Why do you think it is NOW illegal for children

to work long hours?

Serving others

• Many people provide services for others– Firefighters, grocery store workers, doctors,

dentist, teachers, – Instead of making your own clothes, and growing

your own food-we rely on other people to do this work for us!!!!!!!!!
