Description: Born as

Sarah Breedlove,

Madam CJ Walker

became the first

African-American

millionaire and one of

the first female Americans to be a self-made

millionaire. Walker made her fortune by

creating and distributing a line of hair care for

African-American women. Walker travelled

throughout the United States to demonstrate her

“Walker System” - which consisted the use of

heated combs, pomade and brushing. In 1908,

Walker opened a factory and a beauty school in

Pittsburg and even travelled throughout Latin

America and the Caribbean to support her

business. Walker also funded scholarships for

women, provided donation for the NAACP and

to other charities that fought to improve the

lives of African Americans.

February 20th 1962: John Glenn– an astronaut, engineer, and a United

States senator– became the first American to orbit the Earth on the Friendship

7 mission.

February 21th 1848: Karl Marx and Friedrich Engles release The

Communist Manifesto, a political pamphlet which would revolutionize the

world with the idea of communism.

February 22th 1997: Dolly the Sheep, the first mammal cloned from a

somatic cell, had its existence announced to the world by the Roslin Institute

in Scotland.

February 23th 1999: Rapper Eminem releases his first major album: The

Slim Shady LP which would go on to be certified Platinum around the world.

Every year, the United States celebrates President’s Day on the third Monday in the month of February. It is a day where almost everyone gets to stay home, including the federal government. It is also the time where every store is having a sale. So, what do the people who don’t have work or school do? They go shopping! It makes sense, getting what you need or want at decent prices. However, that is not the main reason for President’s Day. Many people seem to have forgotten the true purpose: celebrating George Washington’s birthday and remembering those who lead our country into greatness. President’s Day is a time to celebrate not only our presidents but also those who have served our country through the armed forces, under our leaders, and were wounded or killed. While there is nothing wrong with shopping or relaxing on this day, just be sure to remember those who sacrificed a great deal for our country. By Priya Bhatt

Donald McKinley Glover is better known as

Childish Gambino. Believe it or not, he got the

name Childish Gambino from a Wu-Tang Clan name

generator online. Gambino is unique and multi-

talented, famous for his works as a rapper, writer,

actor, comedian, and producer. He was one of the

writers on the hit NBC Comedy 30 Rock and he

plays the college student, Troy Barnes, on NBC's

Community. Childish Gambino released an

independent album called 'Sick Boi' on June 5th

2008. Then, a year later he followed with another

album titled 'Poindexter'. Releasing multiple hit

songs and albums as well as winning various awards, Childish Gambino

continues to thrive and continue his journey as an artist.

I'm Avi Sura, and I'm Poseidon, god of the sea. Like Poseidon, I

always find myself swimming through the problems I face and keeping that growth

mindset. Some fun facts about me that I love dancing and traveling

around the world.

I'm Sebastian Recto, and I'm the god of love: Eros. To be as godly as Eros, I am often seen getting

along with my peers and the JPS community. My hobbies include singing

with the choir and working out at the gym. A fun fact about me is that I

like playing daily crossword puzzles.

Horoscopes of the Week Pisces - There’s lots of good news coming your way

this week, Pisces! This week is full of praise, opportunity and good

vibes. You may even connect with some old friends. Don’t let school

wear you and your enthusiastic personality out. Be on the lookout

out for new ideas and friendships!

Aries - Last week was extremely stressful with balancing

troubles at school and in your personal life. Aries, this week is full of

lots of work as well, but it’ll all be worth it when you impress others

with your abilities. Take a break this weekend and have some fun. You

deserve it!

Libra - Sleep, sleep, sleep. This week has loads of work

in stock for you, from drama practice and track meets to math tests

and biology projects, and if you don’t get enough rest, this week

won’t be as efficient and beneficial as you hoped it would be. Focus

on taking care of your body, mind, health, and soul. It’s all for the

and projects this week, Virgo. Working late during the week

and school responsibilities, but remember to never overwork yourself.

The Lady Hawks Basketball Team had a nice week, going 1-1 in tournament play. A crushing of North Brunswick, 47-29, had the girls in high spirits. Kiarah Turner led the way with 13 points and 5 rebounds, McKayla and Megan Duffy both added 11 points, Disha Prabhudesai chipped in 7, and Kayla Gatling scored 5 points. A tough loss at Bishop Ahr 3 days later took their record to a still-impressive 14-9. Keep your heads up girls and good luck at Ridge next week!

The JPS Boys Swimming Team ended their amazing season with a loss to Bridgewater-Raritan in the semifinals of the tournament. The final score-line of 44-126 did not show the incredible effort the boys put in this season, which they finished with a final record of 8 wins and only three losses. We are so proud of you! The JPS Boys Basketball Team had a nice week of tournament play, going 1-1 and improving their record to ten wins and twelve losses. They crushed New Brunswick yet again at home, the final score at 55-38. Elisha Smith and Kasi Hazzard let the team with 14 points each. Tyrese Conover was next with 9 points, Solomon Smith chipped in 6 points, Naysean Burch added 5, Frank Diserio put in 2 field goals, and Justice Williams added 3 points. The team recorded 1 block, 15 steals, and 14 assists. A close loss two days later at Old Bridge was heartbreaking, with a final score of 53-58; keep your heads up and good luck this week boys! Support the team when they play Middlesex at home on 02/23/18 at 3:45 PM!
