Learning coding and developing computational thinking skill is now a prevailing trend. Therefore, Coding Education Unit was established under the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC) aiming at nurturing youth’s competence, character, confidence, connection and caring for a healthy and productive life through coding education.

The lion dance team of Po Leung Kuk Tin Ka Ping Primary School had a great performance on that day, and the Chinese couplet showed our mission to spread coding education throughout Hong Kong and help students develop computational thinking skills for a better future.

e-Learning and Digital Competency

With the key objectives of nurturing engaged and reflective learners, ePortfolio has been implemented to offer a platform for students to document, manage and reflect upon their own learning during their study at EdUHK since 2012. Workshops and briefing sessions were offered to staff and students in collaboration with related units.

ePortfolio and GILOs

Generic Intended Learning Outcomes (GILOs) have been established in EdUHK since 2012 to represent the institutional expectations of all graduates to articulate generic abilities which encompass knowledge, skills, attitude, and dispositions. To facilitate understanding of GILOs among students and academic/ teaching staff, the Rubrics for Generic Intended Learning Outcomes (GILO Rubrics) have been developed since 2015. Workshops were offered to students and staff to enhance their understanding of the University’s expectations of graduates and guide them to connect GILOs with learning and teaching.

Workshops and briefing sessions were offered to staff and students.

VBLC serves as a platform for promoting knowledge co-construction in teaching practice.

VBLC

LTTC leads the development of MOOCs in the University and facilitates the development of two MOOC projects: “E-pedagogy in Mathematics Learning and Teaching” and “The English You didn’t Learn in School”.

MOOC

LTTC offers technical support to this initiative aiming to encourage blended learning for students’ reflective engagement and deep learning.

More about CTE2017

CoolThink@JC, which is created and funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and co-created by EdUHK, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and City University of Hong Kong, organised a series of activities to facilitate students’ computational thinking development. Below shows a 39-hour Professional Development Course on “Coding Pedagogy and Computational Thinking Development” for 36 teachers from 12 local primary schools held at EdUHK.

The Coding Education Unit is currently offering 39-hour courses on “Developing iOS Apps with Swift”, “Introduction to Apps Development and 3D Printing (Android platform)”, and “Coding Apps for Mathematics Learning and Teaching (Android platform)”, and 3-hour workshops on Mobile Apps Development and 3D Printing.

Staff Professional Development

Online Video ResourcesOnline video resources are prepared for staff’s reference and self-learning. Apart from the videos of the above mentioned seminars, videos on e-Learning Pedagogy and Introduction of Critical Thinking Development were also produced.

The Certificate Course “Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education” was offered in partnership with Faculties, Departments and Library to equip new academic and teaching staff with essential knowledge and skills of teaching in higher education.

Certificate Course “Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education”

Two sessions (2 September 2016 & 10 January 2017) of staff induction were provided in 2016/17 to new academic & teaching staff to familiarise them with the policy of the University and the use of various e-Learning platforms. In 2017/18, staff induction will continue to be offered, with the first session on 5 September 2017.

Staff Induction

A book titled “Emerging Practices in Scholarship of Learning and Teaching in a Digital Era” was published in April 2017 for wider dissemination of SoLT.

Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoLT)

UGC Teaching Awardees and EdUHK Teaching Awardees were invited for seminars to share with colleagues their good practices. Experienced staff were also invited to share their application, implementation and evaluation of Teaching Development Grant (TDG) Projects.

More about CTE2018

To provide a platform for academic & teaching staff, the postgraduates and local/ overseas researchers to exchange novel ideas and their experiences in innovative learning and teaching, Learning and Teaching @EdUHK Festival will continue to be organised in 2017/18.

Learning and Teaching @EdUHK 2018

There is an increasing need for creating video resources given the latest development on Video-based Learning Community (VBLC), Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), and the “Blended Learning for University Enhancement” (BLUE) initiative. Hence, the setup of a Video Resource Production Room was proposed to support academic & teaching staff to produce quality video resources.

Development of video resources

Apart from the Certificate Course “Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education” mentioned above, to further enrich all academic and teaching staff’s capacity with specialisation in teaching, the possibility of developing an advanced Certificate Course is being explored.

Certificate Course “Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education” for Staff Some LTTC staff were trained on AV and VR,

and an Aerial Videography team was developed. The Aerial Videography team is planning some workshops for teaching staff and students in the coming academic year. VR content will also be developed step by step from basic to intermediate and advanced level, such as a VR LTTC and a VR EdUHK Campus.

Aerial Videography (AV) and 3D Virtual Reality (VR)

The International Conference on Computational Thinking Education 2017 (CTE2017) was held successfully with more than 500 pioneers in computational thinking education joining the event.
