What better time to take stock than the beginning of a new year? Maybe it is on the cusp of your 30th birthday. StageSource was founded in 1985, first as an organization for artists. A few years in, it merged with another organization, so the second membership type — that of theater organization — was created. Over the years we have continued to serve the New England theater community by connecting it artists with jobs, organizations with artists, and audiences with theater. Many of our core services remain the same. The e-news goes out every Thursday. The StagePage comes out three times a year, and is now online as well at MyStagePage.com. We hold the StageSource Job Fair (Feb 21) and StageSource Annual Auditions (April 12-14) every year. 2015 is a conference year: on June 7 the StageSource Theater Conference will convene to tackle the question “Who Are We?”, with discussions of the findings from different working groups who have spent the fall meeting, and gathering data around new work, gender parity, and space needs in our community.
In between these large events, we are adding classes and workshops, including the all day GoAudition! intensive designed to help actors at all stages of their careers prepare for the spring audition season. Our Basic Training: Building Your Administrative Core is a five-class series that designed to give administrative professional development for artists, or early career administrators who work for our member organizations. This spring we will also be hosting networking events — stay tuned for more information on those.
We are launching a new website that will give all of our members a better online experience. It will also allow StageSource to disseminate information much more effectively. We will be in contact with our members about this upgrade, and the benefits of it.
The theater community that StageSource of 1985 served was so different than the theater community of 2015. Today’s community is more vibrant, with more depth and breadth. There are still challenges, but our advocacy efforts are paying off on many different levels. We look forward to working with each of you to make our next thirty years even more remarkable.
I look forward to seeing you at the theater. Or at a class, or workshop, or at the conference!
Julie Hennrikus, Executive Director

spotlight on:
You may notice something different about your StagePage this time around. The Audience Engagement committee (a sub-group of StageSource’s Gender Parity Task Force) has been working hard to put together information to highlight local productions in 2014-15 which champion the work of female* artists.
The projects that have been selected for this designation are permitted to use the logo on marketing materials, are listed in the January-April StagePage, and may also host Parity Parties (organized visits/talk-backs with audience members interested in gender parity in theater!)
“A Standing O aids audiences in finding productions that fully include women on many levels. When I talk about gender parity, there is often a sense of, well, what can one person do? We can all support theatre that is being made made by women with our dollars and our presence.” says Jen Alison Lewis, actor and member of the Audience Engagement Committee. “More attention has been given of late to productions written by women, which is great, but it had been very difficult to know how to support female designers, actors, and directors. The Standing O highlights such productions for the aware theatre-goer.”
The shows that appear here with the Standing O logo - - next to them have been reviewed by the Audience Engagement Committee and meet three of these five critereon:
1) At least 50% female playwriting team (includes composers/lyricists)
2) At least 50% female directing team (includes music directors)
3) At least 50% female cast
4) At least 50% female designers
5) Focuses on women’s stories.

* Note that in all designations, “female” includes female-identified, trans*, gender queer, and all other non-normative gender identities.
