ENW 367 Introduction Last week’s ENW podcast focused on the damage that plastic is doing to the world’s seas and oceans and examined some initiatives that are attempting to reduce waste. This week’s podcast is keeping with the recycling theme by reporting on plans by the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to use recycled materials for all medals won at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. What materials will be used? What other recycled materials will be included? Will this be the Greenest Olympics ever?

In a break from over 100 years of history, the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games Organising Committee (SOGOC) have 1: ______ that all of next year’s medals will be produced from recycled digital waste. Traditionally medals handed out at the previous 31 Summer Olympics were obtained from local mining firms, but the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) decided that next year’s Games would be different. This was in part due to Japan 2: ______ in natural mineral resources but also because the JOC wanted Tokyo 2020 to be an environmentally friendly event.

It was in February 2017 that collection boxes were distributed around Japan encouraging people to donate old mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras and handheld games. The plan was then to turn these 3: ______ digital appliances into the 2,000 kg needed to forge the 5,000 gold, silver and bronze medals. Koji Murofushi, the Tokyo 2020 sports director explained why SOGOC had decided to ask for donations, “There's a 4: ______ on the resources of our earth, so recycling these things will make us think about the environment” he said.
