In a break from over 100 years of history, the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games Organising Committee (SOGOC) have 1: ______ that all of next year’s medals will be produced from recycled digital waste. Traditionally medals handed out at the previous 31 Summer Olympics were obtained from local mining firms, but the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) decided that next year’s Games would be different. It was in February 2017 that collection boxes were distributed around Japan encouraging people to donate old mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras and handheld games. The plan was then to turn these 3: ______ digital appliances into the 2,000 kg needed to forge the 5,000 gold, silver and bronze medals. Koji Murofushi, the Tokyo 2020 sports director explained why SOGOC had decided to ask for donations, “There's a 4: ______ on the resources of our earth, so recycling these things will make us think about the environment” he said.

The total amount of digital waste products that were 5: ______ at the special collection boxes was far more than expected.
