do so at St. Peter’s. Also, if one is unable to come to the altar rail, contact an Usher prior

Worship in our Episcopal Church community should be characterized by a combination
of both tolerance and respect for others. If during worship you need to exit the nave
(sanctuary) or return, please consider the appropriate times to return during the liturgy:
times of congregational singing (hymns) or speaking (the creed); or at the peace. Please
try to refrain from leaving or entering during times of prayer/confession and during the
sermon. Our ushers will be at the doors to the Nave to assist you.
Children:
Worship in our Episcopal Church Community should be characterized by a combination
of both tolerance and respect for others. Children are always welcome in worship, but if
your child should become 'inconsolable', please consider quietly moving into the Narthex
or Fotinos Hall until your little one 'settles down'. Remember that we have a fully staffed
nursery (infants – 2 yrs.) downstairs for your convenience.

The Liturgy of the Palms
When circumstances permit, the congregation may gather at a place apart from the church, so that all may
go into the church in procession.
The branches of palm or of other trees or shrubs to be carried in the procession may be distributed to the
people before the service, or after the prayer of blessing.
The following or some other suitable anthem is sung or said, the people standing

When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the
Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the
village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a
colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why
are you doing this?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here
immediately.’” They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the

street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, “What are
you doing, untying the colt?” They told them what Jesus had said; and they
allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their
cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and
others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went
ahead and those who followed were shouting,
“Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked
around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the
twelve.

People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by

spread their garments and branches of palm along his way.

THE PASSION GOSPEL: Mark 14: 1 - 15:47 Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, “Are you the King of the
Jews?” Jesus said, “You say so.” But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders,
he did not answer. Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many accusations they
make against you?” But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the
governor was greatly amazed.
Now at the festival the governor was accustomed to release a prisoner for the crowd,
anyone whom they wanted. At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Jesus
Barabbas. So after they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to

release for you, Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” For he realized that it
was out of jealousy that they had handed him over. While he was sitting on the judgment
seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for today I
have suffered a great deal because of a dream about him.” Now the chief priests and the
elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus killed. The governor
again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they
said, “Barabbas.” Pilate said to them, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the
Messiah?” All of them said, “Let him be crucified!” Then he asked, “Why, what evil has
he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”
So when Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he
took some water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this
man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” Then the people as a whole answered, “His blood be
on us and on our children!” So he released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus,
he handed him over to be crucified.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they
gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,
and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in
his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. After mocking him,
they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to
crucify him.
As they went out, they came upon a man from Cyrene named Simon; they compelled this
man to carry his cross. And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means
Place of a Skull), they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it,
he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among
themselves by casting lots; then they sat down there and kept watch over him. Over his
head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”
Then two bandits were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those
who passed by derided him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who would destroy
the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come
down from the cross.” In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and
elders, were mocking him, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the
King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. He
trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to; for he said, ‘I am God’s Son.’” The
bandits who were crucified with him also taunted him in the same way.
From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And
about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is,
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” When some of the bystanders heard it,
they said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” At once one of them ran and got a sponge,

filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink. But the others said,
“Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” Then Jesus cried again with a
loud voice and breathed his last. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in
two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were
opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. After his
resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many.
Now when the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw
the earthquake and what took place, they were terrified and said, “Truly this man was
God’s Son!”

Holy Week & The Cost of Grace Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of the Church. We are fighting today for costly grace. Grace is represented as the Church’s inexhaustible treasury, from which she showers blessings with generous hands, without asking questions or fixing limits. Grace without price; grace without cost! The essence of grace, we suppose, is that the account has been paid in advance; and, because it has been paid, everything can be had for nothing. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, communion without confession, absolution without contrition. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate…Costly grace is the Gospel which must be sought again and again, the gift which must be asked for, the door at which we must knock. After many decades, Campbell’s Soup is canceling its soup label program. Karen Taylor can
receive labels until January 1st but after that date the program will be no more. Thank you for your
donations over the years!
REQUESTS † REQUESTS FOR PRAYER -- To make a prayer request for a loved one or a community or a national
concern to be offered up on Sunday mornings, record the name on the prayer list beside the Guest
Register in the Narthex. Confidential prayer can be requested using the blue DOK prayer cards in
the pews. Prayer requests received on the DOK cards are kept confidential and are not spoken on
Sunday mornings, but are prayed for by all DOK members daily for one month or longer, if requested
on the card.
† FLOWERING THE CROSS
It has long been the custom at St. Peters and many other Episcopal Churches for a
cross to be “flowered” on Easter Day. We transform this instrument of torture and
death into a symbol of the love and mercy of God and our hope in the Resurrection.
On Easter Day, everyone is invited to bring your handheld flowers and place them
on the Cross during our 8:30am and 10:30am services.

† 2018 Co-Ed Softball - SPBTL Saints It’s that time again – dust off your glove and take a few practice swings
with your bat! If you are between the ages of 15 and still kicking, we need
you for softball this year! See sign-up sheet in Fotinos Hall for more
information. Season will be mid-April through mid-June 2018. We need male and female players!
Cost will be a $25 player fee, and TBD for any new team shirts needed this year. Please be sure to
list your shirt size on the sign-up sheet.

EASTER COLLECTION "EASTER, 2018,
COLLECTION WILL GO TO THOMPSON'S - WATCH FOR SPECIAL ENVELOPES"
For over ten years, St. Peter by-the-Lake has been directly engaging and supporting Thompson (formerly Thompson Child & Family Focus). Annually, the Hawkins’ Puppet Ministry, with the Mission/Outreach Committee, has provided Saturday morning entertainment and lunch for the children. During the pre-Easter season, the congregation has contributed to purchasing uniforms for the children. And each Thanksgiving, our Diocese engages all its parishes to support a Special Offering in support of Thompson, which has its roots of origin and support in the three Episcopal Dioceses of North Carolina.

HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE Tenebrae is a Holy Week worship service dating
back to the 18th century. It is a candlelight service
drama based on the seven words from the cross.
An opportunity for quiet prayer
during Holy Week.
Holy Eucharist & Stripping of the Altar Our service emphasizes the institution of the Holy Eucharist by our
Lord Jesus Christ. According to the Gospels, the Last Supper was
a Passover meal with its well-loved and familiar associations. At
this time Jesus instituted the Eucharist as the central act of worship
in the New Covenant. As the service concludes, the Altar is stripped of its adornments, and the Church is left entirely in
darkness. This symbolizes our Lord being stripped of his garments by the soldiers as he is prepared for the cross. We are
ready to enter Good Friday.
MAUNDY THURSDAY ALL NIGHT PRAYER VIGIL 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM on Good Friday morning – Sign-up now in Front foyer of church.
Stations of the Cross – An event for the whole family…The
story / journey of the Passion of Jesus Christ in fourteen steps or
stations. It is a common Lenten practice. Most of the stations come
directly from Scripture while the others come from tradition.
