A MESSAGE FROM FR. BARRETT

The Lord be with you!A few weeks ago a member handed me two very different clergy letters regarding the unrest in our streets and the Black Lives Matter movement. It was refreshing to read two very different opinions side by side. I am grieved that civil dialogue seems to have died in our country. We now have a tribal approach to political dialogue. Each “tribe” has their own creed which is infallible and conversation is only acceptable if it fits the tribe’s dogmas. So leaders are exalted as Messiahs who can do no wrong. Every word from their mouth is a pearl of wisdom for the ages. Or they are the embodiment of Satan. Their every word and action is an example of blatant evil.

Recently a member forwarded an email typical of this attitude. The author prefaced their options with this message. “Just read this but don’t respond. I have no interest in your opinion if you disagree with this.” After having his nomination destroyed by the political opposition, the US Supreme Court nominee, Robert Bork, wrote a book called “The Closing of the American Mind.” I did not live through the early fifties and Joe McCarthy but I fear we have entered a new age of censorship, intolerance, and character assassination by lie and innuendo.

This is a time for the followers of Christ to present a different face to the world. Remember that the gospels are full of Jesus’ dialogue with friend and foe.

He did not preach or teach to a selective audience. He also did not demonize anyone, but exorcised unclean spirits. May the people of God lead our nation back to civil dialogue and peaceful protest of injustice.

Peace Father Barrett

Worship Reopening Guidelines

Hand sanitizer will be available in the narthex and should be used before entering the sanctuary.

Only one person will be allowed in the restroom at a time.

All those in attendance over the age of two must wear face masks. If you do not have a mask or forget your mask, they will be available in the narthex.

There will be one, worship at 10:00 which we will continue to broadcast. If attendance looks like it will exceed 50, a second Mass will be added.

Communion will continue to be in one kind (host only-no wine)

Distribution will be continuous without using the communion rail

When leaving worship, we will dismiss by rows to maintain separation

There will be no passing of the peace

We will sit using alternate rows

There will be no coffee hour

Surfaces in the sanctuary will be wiped down with sanitizer following worship.

The ushers will not pass offering plates. Leave your offering at the door as you enter

There will be no hymnals, bulletins or Book of Common Prayer in the pews. Bulletins are to be discarded after worship.

Please remember when leaving the church, that we do not congregate in the Narthex or outside in front of the Church doors. We must keep social distance ourselves. Be safe and keep healthy.

DAUGHTERS OF THE KING

At our last meeting we decided that due to the current pandemic we will not be sponsoring Operation Christmas Child this year. We don’t want to encourage any unnecessary shopping. However, if you would still like to support the mission, you can do so at: www.samaritanspurse.org

You can build a shoebox on line or just make a donation.

We greatly appreciate your support through the years. God Bless and stay safe.

Leah Foshay, President

Education for Ministry (EFM)

We invite members of the Advent family to join the EfM (Education for Ministry) group that we have had since 2005.  We meet on Thursday from 9:30 AM to 12:00 at the church.  We will start a new group on September 3 and go until May 27.  The program has been offered by the University of the South since 1974.  Current members of the church who graduated from the program are: Pat Arnold, Wayne Baker, Jane Blair, Maryann Brennan, Linda Byrd, Lesley Ciullo, Mary Daniels, Larry and Joyce Harris, Liz Herrick, Pat Howard, Lynn Johns, Norm and Eveline Lapointe, Paul and Nancy McGuckin, Debbie Milliron, Marilyn Murphy, Shirley Peloquin, and Nancy Schnurle.   Current members of the group are Dori Sullivan, Elaine Meekins, Nancy Rodriguez, Betty Scott and Don Clark.  As of now Jane Falkner and Barbara Spencer will join the group in September.

Lay persons face the difficult and often subtle task of interpreting the richness of the church’s faith in a complex and confusing world. They need a theological education which supports their faith and also teaches them to express that faith in day-to-day events. As the emphasis on lay ministry has grown, EfM has come to play an important role by providing a program that develops an informed and knowledgeable laity.

The EfM program is preparation for the ministry to which we all are called. It is that vocation for which we pray at the end of the Eucharist: “And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.”

The seminar group is the nucleus of the Education for Ministry program. A group consists of six to twelve participants and a trained mentor who meet weekly over the course of a nine-month academic year. These meetings are usually from two and a half to three

hours in length.  Through study, prayer, and reflection, EfM groups move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God’s kingdom.

Participants are given weekly assignments to study with the help of resource guides. Participants are responsible for setting their own learning goals. They spend between two and four hours in study and preparation each week. In the seminars members have an opportunity to share their insights and discoveries as well as to discuss questions which the study materials raise for them.

Through discussion and guided reflection, the seminar furnishes an opportunity to deepen understanding of the reading materials.

Backpacks 4 KidsInterfaith advises that they intend to reactivate this program for this current school year. They are optimistic that they can be up and running by the end of September.I advised them that Advent would be on hand and ready to serve when the time comes. If you are able and available to assist with this program, we will be making our delivery on THURSDAY morning, during the months of September thru May.  If you are interested or have any questions pertaining to this program, please contact  AL Sickle 352 208 5664Yours in ChristAl Sickle

Sunrise Hats and Mittens

Normally, this Sunrise article would say something like “it’s time to put those finishing touches on your hats and mittens for delivery in early October”. Well, you will agree that because of COVID, the last 6 months have been anything close to “normal”.

If you are in the midst of making a hat, you can finish it BUT please don’t start anymore. At this point in time, I don’t know if Sunrise is allowed to accept our hats or any donations.

Marion County schools have recently reopened to approximately 70% of the children attending classroom instruction. The remaining children will receive instruction on-line. Initially, this school year will be an extremely challenging time for staff and teachers because of the new COVID guidelines and procedures for hand washing, face masks/shields, social distancing, etc.

For this reason, we are temporarily postponing the delivery of the hats and mittens to Sunrise until, at earliest, November. In mid-October, I plan to contact Sunrise to determine 1) if or when they would like the hats and mittens, and 2) are there any special procedures regarding our donation.

Also, we are NOT accepting any donations of yarn for this ministry at this time.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please feel free to email or call me at [email protected] or (352)502-3448 (local cell phone).
