Conclusions: the European perspective
• Directive is just a step in a long (20 years!) process
• Legislation is the beginning of a new period, not the end
• There is movement in the value chain, but further enforcement is needed
• It is now down to Member States, not the EC• National policy makers need to enhance the
functioning of the Directive:– Leading the public sector to comply – Shape an overarching national data policy– Helping the private sector to reap the benefits
• So let’s see how Spain is doing!
