Our Shooting Star

I come from a very small family. My mom, dad and two brothers. I had three uncles, two grandmothers and one great grandmother. I never met either grandfather. I was very blessed to have been born into a very loving, fun family.

My mom had one brother. His name was Kenneth. Kenneth was 8 years younger than my mom. She loved Ken and doted on him. They had tough times growing up but with the help and guidance of their mom and grandmother they did very well.

Now hearing about Ken from my mom she said he was a very curious young child and loved going to Mass. He always wanted to sit in the front pew at church and he sang the loud-est. The good sisters of the parish sat in the pew directly behind Ken and the family. They al-ways said how much they enjoyed his singing. Although my mom said that he sang off key, but the sisters were really being kind.

Mom told me that Uncle Ken always had his nose in a book and loved to read about the stars and the planets. He would then go outside to the front porch and tell his numerous friends what he had just read. The other children were captivated by his tales.

Mom and her family lived across the street from St. Cecelia’s Catholic church and they be-came very good friends with Fr. Thomas Raftery. Fr. Raftery would come over very often. He would talk about different things and he talked in great length about the priesthood. After Ken graduated from eighth grade he went to Quigley. He then went on to Mundelein and became a priest.

The entire family was so excited and proud to have a priest in the family. Fr. Kenneth S. Wojtas. His first assignment was St. Thomas the Apostle in Hyde Park. He was chaplain at Billings hospital and Lying In also in Hyde Park.

But as they say people make plans and the good Lord sits back and just smiles. For you see, my brothers and I did not have much time with Uncle Ken. He and two other priests, Fr. Tho-mas Fisher and Fr. Harry Heineman along with Fr. Heinemans brother (who was the pilot of the plane) perished in a plane crash.

I often think of Uncle Ken as a shooting star, beautiful and bright but faded much to quickly. I wonder what Uncle Ken could have and would have accomplished had he lived a longer life. But the good Lord had other plans.
