From the Pastor’s Desk September, 2019

Pastor Joel Bacon

Unbelievable, another September, another school year about to begin, is upon us. I find myself thinking about physics – mainly about the law of momentum.

The Law of Momentum states: Objects at rest tend to stay at rest and objects in motion tend to stay in motion. Usually in September we try to get things moving again because we have rested from the previous program cycle and it is time to give a good push to Sunday School and things like that.

I have a potted plant at the parsonage that sits on the corner of the yard and I pick it up and move it to mow and then put it back when I am done – no weed whipping that way. But the pot is getting more difficult to move each time as it settles into the ground and the ground forms itself around it. Not only is it falling to the law of momentum it is getting used to it. Sometimes we take some time off from something and it becomes harder to start it up again because we get so used to what we are doing (or not doing). Og Mandino, in his book The Greatest Salesman in the World, quoted this highly successful salesman as living by important rules and one of them was: Become a slave to good habits. Basically saying that when one practices good habits it becomes increasingly easier to keep practicing good habits – momentum is on your side.

So let’s start some good habits this fall – habits that feed us and make us better members and better neighbors and better families. Let’s let those habits be so beneficial that we would hate to let go of them. Let’s make it a habit to be decent, and forgiving, and hopeful, and helpful, and industrious, and loving, and attentive, and faithful.

Sometimes it seems we are some racked pool balls waiting for the player to smack the cue ball and get the game going – we do not know if it will be a violent break, an accurate break, will we be spread out or bunched up? I think I would rather have the autonomy to get myself moving in a positive direction and keep it going.

Physics-Schmysics! Let’s do good!

In Christ,

Pastor Joel

Stewardship

Long ago now I served a four-year hitch in the Air Force. My assigned job was being a fire fighter. Some of us were assigned to regular fire trucks like we see around all of the time such as pumpers and tankers designed to fight normal structural fires. But the other mission we had was for fires involving aircraft.

As you might assume flying has some inherent risks so we would have what were called inflight emergencies quite often. The loud claxon in the firehouse would sound and we would all rush to our assigned “crash” truck and proceed to our predetermined stand by location along the length of the runway to wait for the inbound aircraft that had declared an emergency. The air traffic controllers in the tower would then come on the radio to describe the nature of the emergency. They would advise the type of aircraft, the amount of fuel left on board, the type of weapons it was carrying and what problem the aircraft was having. After all of that the controller would offer information about the crew. He would not say there is a crew of 6 or there are 2 people on board. The crew would be described as follows. “There are six souls on board”.

At the time I did not think too much of that phrase. It became routine. We needed to know about the aircraft, the fuel, the weapons etc. so we would know what to expect if something went wrong but we most importantly had to know about the people or as we were told the “souls”. But now some 50 years later those few words seem to have more meaning. I do not know how it was determined that the crew would be referred to as souls but it would seem to me that the use of that word implied some greater value to that crew than saying 6 men and two women or that there is a crew of 4. If that aircraft crashed those souls needed to be rescued because they were to be valued.

Is it not the same for us here? Our church, our community and our world are made up of people of value (souls). It is our calling to care about and minister to each other and to the “souls” that we encounter every day. We can live out that calling by being engaged with our church and community remembering that each of us has value just like those souls on the inbound aircraft.

Stewardship Committee,

Bruce Schmidt

An Evangelical Minute

When all link hands and work together engaged in God’s work. Over my many years, and as a member of eight churches during our moving years, our family found ourselves among some of God’s most busy disciples who were living their lives as testimonies to their faith. Most seemed oblivious to “faith controversies” as they just carried on with their work. They didn’t dwell on their God-given gifts – they just used them. What do I mean by this? Think back to our recent Annual Year Book for our congregational meeting. Did you notice the gorgeous cover photo of the church with the rainbow arch over it following a rainstorm? We can thank the gift of Scott Orton who took this wonderful photo of where we gather to worship our God.

Dale Schleeter, Council President, was pleased with all of the volunteers who stepped forward to serve in church governing positions. He further commended all the volunteers who remodeled and expanded a bathroom that now qualifies as a handicapped space for those in need of this facility at First Lutheran.

Members of our church worked hard to raise just over $50,000 and secured a grant for an additional $50,000 for our kitchen. Soon, volunteers will help tackle this space which is due to become a state of the art facility from which we will continue to serve our Wednesday Night Community Suppers. This service to the community is now in its 25th year!

Think for a moment about your membership as part of the “Family at First.” How do you feel? Is it exciting? What have you participated in over time? Women’s activities? Worship time? Kitchen time? Whatever your answer you no doubt have been a part of “being made new” at one point or another. It is through you and your work that First is the witness in our community it is today.

As said so well in our Annual Year Book, “We are a church that is deeply rooted…..and always being made new.” By whom? By you and you and you and you, by everyone! God bless you all and thank you!

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank you for the faithfulness over time of members of your churches who give of their time, their talents and their treasure to bear witness to their faith. May their witness be a model for others to follow.

In Christ,

Amen

First Lutheran Church Women September 2019

We begin one of the most beautiful seasons in Northern Wisconsin and as I write near the end of August the smell of fall is in the air. It is the time of so many fall programs starting; we definitely change our activities for autumn. First Lutheran begins with the Backpack collections, Rally Day, Fall Retreats, planning for the Scandinavian Dinner, Sunday School for our youth, and New Studies for the adult programs in our church, these are just a few. May they all be acceptable in your sight oh Lord.

We had our Salad Luncheon Tuesday and it was well attended and enjoyed by all, thank you Peace for hosting. The tables were graced with Marlene Tremblay’s beautiful flowers from her garden. The Pastor gave us again a lot to think about. The theme was Remember. He let us know that the Bible mentions the word Remember 312 times. So as God’s Children we take direction from Him and we Remember His love for us and we in turn “Let all that we do be done in Love”, First Lutherans new Mission Statement. There are so many remembers said in the Bible, I know I will be more aware of them as I read the scripture. Remember, O Lord, your great mercy and love for they are from old. Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways: according to your love remember me, for you are good, O Lord. Psalm 25:6-7 is just one I remembered.

Maxine Poppe, Linda Euneau and I attended The 55th Annual Heart of the North Women’s Retreat August12th at Luther Park Bible Camp in Chetek, WI. We enjoyed the music by Amy Brekke and Friends, and the speaker Pastor Maggie Isaacson Pastor of North Valley Lutheran Church. She spoke on Sara and Hagar, the personal side. Our SWO president Lori Wells spoke on the Trafficking legislation that will be voted on in the near future in Madison, and met our new HON Coordinator Janet Alison. We got updates on what our synod is doing and enjoyed a nice evening meal. It is always a pleasurable time.

The Women of First Lutheran continue again with their study times: 1) Women’s Weekly Bible Study will meet each Tuesday in the library at 8:00 AM at the church; they areusing a DVD for study.2) Jubilee Circle will have their Organizational /planning meeting on Tuesday Sept. 17th at 6 PM in thechurch Library. You are asked to bring your thoughts and ideas for a new DVD series to use at study, all arewelcome. Call Rhonda Passolt if you have any Questions at 715-634-1062 or [email protected]) Peace Circle will meet at 9:45 AM Tuesday Sept. 10th at the church. Leader: Linda EuneauHost: Barbara Klippel.4) Faith Hope and Love will meet at 1:30 PM Tuesday Sept. 10th at church in the Library. Leader: LindaGordon, Host: Carol Nelson

Peace and Faith, Hope, & Love Circles will be studying from the Gather Magazine the new study called: “No Hard Feelings” The angst of anger. Session one.

To all women, if you are looking for a Bible study to join please come to one of these studies. Choose one that suits your schedule and come and be blessed by Gods people studying, praying, and learning together. All are welcome. Coming events: Sept 4th Wednesday at 4PM please attend the planning meeting for the Scandinavian Dinner to be held on Friday Nov, 1st. Please 2018 Chairs make an effort to attend; we cover a lot of ground that first meeting. Sept. 8th is Rally Day and we will have tables in the narthex for all groups to display their projects and information on what they do as part of the church’s continuing ministries. Saturday the 7th would be a good time to set up for the three services.

Sept. 18th Wednesday at 4PM. We will have our General Meeting of FLCW and it is the meeting we elect officers. Please try to attend this meeting. I would like to hear from you as to what missions that we could do as a special project this year.

Sept. 28th is the Synodical Women’s Day of Enrichment at Long Lake Lutheran Church in Sarona, WI. (We had it here at our church last year). The cost this year is $20 and 9AM registration this includes the lunch. The distance is close so I hope some of you will consider going. The focus will be on our commitment to grow in faith; to become engaged in ministry and action; and to promote healing and wholeness.

We are a busy and blessed church. Keep us always mindful of others reaching out in prayer and friendship.

Remember, “Let all that we do be done in Love”.

Your FLCW President, Linda Gordon

From Goals to Prayer

September 1st seems more like a new year than January 1st.

The preparation for a new school year comes with goals like: I’m going to make a hot breakfast for my kids every morning or I will pack them cold lunch every day or I will wake up earlier or I will focus on helping with homework every night… the list can go on forever. Right?!? As parents, we all have these thoughts, ideas, goals in mind as a new school year starts. Students tend to set the goals as well: I will do my homework as soon as I get home every night or I will work hard to keep A’s and/or B’s or I will make sure to listen, pay attention, do good in class. Talk about pressure!!!!

September 1st is stressful! It is full of excitement, goals, dreams, ideas. It is the start of something new. A clean slate. New teachers. New classrooms. New curriculum. And the favorite by most (especially mine) new school supplies and clothes!!!

Every year we go through this process…the stress…the anxiety. Why? Do we feel this amount of pressure on January 1st when we make our New Years Resolutions? I know I don’t, and I have figured out my why.

In January, I set goals for my personal self. Things I can do better. Things I can do without. They are personal. If I fail my resolution in January, it is on me. September goals are family goals. They are set for the goodness of others. Some are sacrifices of sleep or time or wisdom. If I fail on September goals it affects my family.

It is human nature to provide, care and love others. When we have ideas or goals on helping others and don’t follow through it naturally affects our hearts…especially when it comes to our loved ones. So, why do we do this every September? Why do we continue to put these goals/challenges/ideas into play?

I have a new goal this year…and I invite all of you to join me. Work God’s plan with the love of Jesus and the strength of the Holy Spirit. Bring love and compassion to your home. Exchange the stress for prayer. Flip the script. Work hard as a united front…a unity through our Lord.

As parents, be present. As students, be willing. As a family be able!

“Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:5-7

~Many Blessings~

ADULT FORUMS STARTING SOON! We will be starting this year with a 12 week DVD series on our Lutheran Liturgy. Dr. Arthur Just, Professor at Concordia Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, will lead viewers through the heritage of our Lutheran liturgy, and its scriptural origins. Sessions will include topics on “Introduction to the Lutheran Liturgy; the Structure of Liturgy, Jewish origins in Christian Worship; The Table Fellowship of Jesus and Structure of Word and Sacrament; Liturgy in the Life of Jesus; The Liturgy of the Word; The liturgy of Sacrament; The Entrance, Preparation and Distribution; The Lutheran Liturgy: 1941 and beyond, the Church Year and Sunday, the Lord’s day; The Services of Prayer, Catechesis, Baptism and the Liturgy of Life.” For those of us who were raised Lutheran, it will be a great review of our Catechism days – and for many of us, it has been many years! For those new to the Lutheran Tradition, or for those with questions on “why do we do what we do?” this may be an enlightening experience.

There is no study involved or participation in the conversation if you don’t wish to. Just come, enjoy the videos, learning opportunity and fellowship!

We hope to see you there! ALL ARE WELCOME!

“Day 1”, a voice of mainline Christian Churches, presents messages by clergy representing mainline Christian faiths, including those of the ELCA. Peter Wallace, host for each broadcast, facilitates discussion with clergy on timely topics. This radio ministry reaches our shut-ins, visitors to the area, and others for whom regular worship and Church affiliation are not a part of their daily lives. The cost per broadcast is $30.

We have First Lutheran members sponsor the “Day 1” weekly segments on radio station WRLS-FM (92.3). These segments air at 8:30am every Sunday. The sponsorship of a broadcast may be in honor of a person, or special occasion, or in memory of a loved one and is open to all.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America God's work. Our hands.

We are a Church that is deeply rooted—and always being made new.

We are deeply rooted. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is still comparatively new as a Church body, and yet our roots are much deeper than our 25 years together. The taproot of our life extends through the histories of predecessor Churches in the United States, through the formative witness of the 16th century evangelical reformers and their confessional writings, to the Scriptures and the word of Christ. Our life is in Jesus Christ. We are deeply rooted in his word of forgiveness and the promises of God’s steadfast love and mercy. The word of Christ dwells in us richly. God nourishes us as one body in Jesus Christ with companions from around the globe who meet us at Christ’s table of grace.

We are being made new every day. In Jesus Christ we are not unchanged. What God does in Christ is as radical as the death and resurrection of baptism, where new creatures in Christ rise to live “no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them.” God is bringing that new creation to life among us in the ministry of reconciliation. In that service we no longer see each other as we did before. We are no longer strangers, competitors or enemies to each other. We are beloved companions in one body, restored to a communion where the rich diversity of our experiences, wisdom and abilities serve the common good in Christ. The new creation in Christ rises to life among us every day.
