April 2-5

Dear Friends in Christ,
Holy Week is before us again. As always it is a week full of opportunity to
worship, to hear the ancient story of God’s great love for you in Jesus, and to grow
in faith. Please be sure to join us as we gather again and again during this special
week and mark the movement from Death to Life. May our faith be deepened as
we encounter Christ during those Holy Days:
Sunday, March 29 at 9:00 AM
Palm Sunday — We will gather in the Atrium to Bless the Palms. Together we
will process in as the people did so long ago as they celebrated Jesus’ entrance into
Jerusalem.
Thursday, April 2 at 7:00 PM
Maundy Thursday — On this special night we remember Jesus washing the feet
of his commandment and giving them a new commandment to love one another.
At the beginning of the service following the Confession, you will have the
opportunity to come forward to individually hear the words of forgiveness. We
also gather around a table for Holy Communion in groups of 12 (symbolizing the
twelve disciples) to receive the bread and wine of the Sacrament. The service
closes with the altar being stripped — symbolizing Jesus’ impending suffering and
death.
Friday, April 3 from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Silent Prayer Vigil — Sign up for a time segment to sit in silence in our sanctuary
to meditate on Christ’s Sacrifice for you on the Cross. More than one person can
sign up for a time slot, but the goal is to have at least one person present in prayer
during those hours.
Friday, April 3 at 7:00 PM
Good Friday Tenebrae Service — During this service we hear the story of Jesus’
Crucifixion and Death. The lights will be dimmed until we finish in darkness and
silence.
Saturday: April 4 at 7:00 PM
Easter Vigil — This service begins in darkness and becomes increasingly light. It
is the first celebration of Easter. In the early church, this service was a time set
aside for baptism. If you or someone you love is considering baptism and would
like to be baptized at the Easter Vigil, please be in conversation with me right
away!
Sunday, April 5 at 7:00 AM
Easter Sunrise Service at the Cemetery — We will gather at Fairview Cemetery
where we will celebrate the Good News of Easter in a place similar to where the
Good News of Jesus’ Resurrection was first shared!

Dear First Lutheran Church and Pastor
Janet,
Jon and I would like to thank you from
the bottom of our hearts for such a
lovely baptism for our little boy. First
Lutheran has been so warm and
welcoming and we feel incredibly
blessed by your kindness toward our
family. Thank you also for the adorable
blanket, candle, baptism medallion,
and Hug-a-Bible. We will cherish all
of it so much. God Bless!

Children & Youth Ministry Page 4
The Moms of ‘Littles at First’ by Heidi Peterson
We are excited to invite mothers of young children to
meet for a weekly time of fellowship. Moms spend the
Sunday School hour discussing the joys and struggles
of raising children. Recent topics included: teaching
our kids important Christian life skills, surviving the
terrible twos, and getting the most from worship with
our families. Feel free to drop in as often as you are able! Sunday mornings from
10:30 - 11:30, across from the toddler class upstairs.
Babies at First Lutheran!
The cutie pictured here is Bennett Borovich on his day of
Baptism as the Assisting Minister Mike Wadle carried him
around the church for all to see! Bennett is the first son of
proud parents, Kara and Jon Borovich, born on August 26,
2014. Kara is a kindergarten teacher at Founders Grade
School in DeKalb and Jon is an assistant basketball coach at
N.I.U. We are pleased to welcome Bennett into the church
family!
Another new arrival came on March 1, 2015 named Adelaide
Skye Foelske, daughter of Ryan and Kar issa Foelske.
Many of you prayed for Adelaide, granddaughter of Cathy and Loren Foelske, as
she tried to come too early. With lots of prayers and bedrest, mom and baby had a
healthy delivery!
With all the new babies here at First, the Learning and Growth Ministry Team put
in a proposal to Council for modern diaper changing tables to be installed in the
men and women’s bathrooms off the Atrium. Thank you to Pastor Hunt and the
Church Council leaders who value our young families and any visitors with
young children!
Grace at Sunday School!
Pictured here is Grace Kuehl, she loves it when we say
“Grace” before snacks at Sunday School because it makes
her feel special. Many of our children ask why do we say
Grace before snacks? Loving teachers in our Sunday
School, Dawn Gersic, Malena Graddy and Linda Freeland
explain the meaning of grace as thanking God for our food.
Children love snack time! Blessing the snack and eating
together creates community as children come together to
fellowship just like the adults do at Coffee Hour in the
Social Hall!
Page 13
A Big Thank You
Please say “Thank You” when you see
any of the First Folks pictured here:
Kyle Kuhns, Gary Skinner, Dennis
Heaney, John Pickens, Roger
Hopkins, Bob Keil, Barney
Schroeder, and (not pictured) Jean
and Ed Callary, Arlyn Strike, and
Mike Wadle. All gave their time and
hands, backs and legs on Friday, March
20, to move furniture donated by Norix
Furniture to Love INC. They first moved 75 boxes of dressers, armoires, tables,
etc from a semi-trailer into this and other smaller trailers and then into a garage
for storage, and finally for later delivery to DeKalb and/or Sycamore folks who
have little or no furniture in their apartment. In fact, Dennis and Barney and
Mike were joined the next morning by Don Johnson, Paul Letheby, and Kurt
Oland to deliver several dressers, etc. on Fir st's monthly “Delivery
Saturday” for Love INC. If interested in joining the monthly delivery team
regularly or when you can, please contact Lynn Schmidt or Mike Wadle.
More Thanks
Many Thanks to Trent Sanderson for sharing stories, pictures, and information
during the Adult Forum on March 8, showing and telling how Sanderson Ag
tends God's earth. Proud Grandpa Jerry provided a great introduction of Trent,
tying him in with the seven generations of Sanderson's who have farmed in
DeKalb County. First Lutheran folks certainly enjoyed being brought up-to-date
with modern methods, such as using GPS and IT not just for guiding the process,
but for actually driving the tractors and operating planters, combines, and other
machinery. We are now certainly more aware and connected to our heritage of
agriculture in this area of northern Illinois, and of the Sanderson Family's multi-
generation commitment and practice of providing good and fertile earth for the
generations to come.
Social Ministry Team
From the Endowment Ministry Team
Save the Date — On Sunday, Apr il 12 at 11:30, the Mission Endowment
Team is sponsoring its annual luncheon for seniors. There will be a financial
update and entertainment and it’s FREE!! This is for all members of First
Lutheran Church who may be interested in the activities of the Endowment
Fund and how the committee is governed in their activities. Reservations will
be required so we can have an accurate count for the meal. We think the Third
Annual Endowment Luncheon for our “experienced members” will be the best
yet. Hope to see you there!!

Beloved Community Dinner
Over the past several months interested people have been gathering for potluck
dinners, the goal of which is to cultivate a climate where folks from different races
and walks of life will seek to understand and to be understood by one another. First
Lutheran hosted the last dinner on Sunday, February 22.
The next Beloved Community Dinner will be held at Neumann Center on Sunday,
April 19, at 5:00 PM. The evening will include a panel discussion by community
leaders regarding race relations in DeKalb. Please plan to join the gathering and
bring a dish to pass if you are able!
Hope Haven Thanks
I would like to thank the following people for their kind contributions to Hope
Haven in the past year: Roberta Burke, Velma Chamberlain, John and Sara Ann
Feken, Cathy Foelske, Nicky Henke, Colleen Johnson, Mary Keil, Nancy
Olsen, Jill Olson, Donna Peterson, Patti Salazar, Marilyn Sanders, Linda
Sanderson, Jan Setchell, Dorothy Thorsen, Jan Womack, and members of

portion of the meal (a main dish; a vegetable or salad; or dessert). First Lutheran
is responsible for the second Wednesday of each month. If you are interested in
helping, please contact Carrie Engstrom at 815-758-2588 or sign up today!
Thank you in advance for helping with this worthwhile community project.
Thank you again for your generosity.

VBS 2015!!! June 22 - 25
Summer will be here before we know it! And that means my
favorite time of year… Vacation Bible School. My family knows I am a big fan of VBS when they see me saving toilet
paper rolls for crafts, singing VBS songs in the car or when my
office starts to look like a TV episode of “Hoarders.” This year’s
theme is Everest, “Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty
Power!” On Saturday, March 28, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 NOON,
we will plan and begin creating easy VBS Decorations. If you
have an artistic eye and love to help, please come! Children are welcome with a
parent to guide and direct their help.
High School Girls at the Fondue Dinner
The dinner was hosted by Nicky Henke and
Ann Oduber. From left: Rachel Hunter-
Rosene, Hannah Clark, Madison Henke,
Kerstin Henke and Megan Kish. It was a
lovely and delicious time!

Holy Week Page 6
Maundy Thursday - April 2 7:00 PM - Worship in the Sanctuary
(Holy Communion and Stripping of the Altar)
In this service, the transition is made from the Eucharistic celebration
to Jesus’ crucifixion and death. As the service concludes, all portable pieces from
the sanctuary are removed, symbolic of Christ being stripped of his power and
glory and placed in the hands of his captors.
Good Friday Tenebrae Service - April 3 7:00 PM - Worship in the Sanctuary
The word Tenebrae means “darkness” or “shadows.”
The purpose of this service is to recreate
the emotional aspects of the passion story.
The Great Easter Vigil - April 4 7:00 PM - Worship
This service begins in darkness with a procession into the
Sanctuary to listen to the ancient stories of the faith. It concludes
with Holy Communion and the celebration of the resurrection.
Good Friday Prayer Vigil
On Friday, April 3, you are invited to participate in a
Prayer Vigil as we contemplate the suffering of Jesus on
the cross in our behalf.
Beginning at 9:00 AM and continuing until 3:00 PM, you
will be able to sign up in 15 minute segments to sit in
silence in the Sanctuary. Resources will be available to
guide your prayer if you wish to use them. It is hoped
that there will be someone continuously in our worship
space from 9:00 - 3:00 that day. At the same time, as many people as wish to,
may sign up to be a part of this vigil in any given time slot. Every hour on the
hour, a leader will read a brief scripture and will offer prayer.
May this be a means for you to deepen your own awareness of and gratitude for
God’s great gifts to us in the suffering and death of Jesus.
Parish Nurse Ministry Page 11
Part-time Assistant Wanted
The First Lutheran Council has approved hiring a Part-
time Administrative and Social Media Assistant to
work on Friday between 8:30 AM and 4:00
PM. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal
communication skills, computers skills including Word,
Publisher, and Excel, and experience updating
Facebook and Twitter accounts, Google calendars, and
websites. A job description and application form are available in the Narthex.
What is the A1C Test? submitted by Cathy Foelske, R.N.
The A1C test is a common blood test used to
diagnose Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes and then
to gauge how well you are managing your
diabetes. The test result reflects your average
blood sugar levels for the past two to three
months. Specifically, the A1C test measures
what percentage of your hemoglobin — a
protein in red blood cells that carry oxygen — is coated with sugar. The
higher your A1C level, the poorer your blood sugar control and the higher
risk of diabetes complications. An international committee of experts from
the American Diabetes Association, the European Association for the Study
of Diabetes and the International Diabetes Federation recommend that the
A1C test be the primary test used to diagnose pre-diabetes, Type 1, and Type
2 Diabetes. After a diabetes diagnosis, the A1C test is used to monitor your
diabetes treatment plan. Since the A1C test measures your average blood
sugar level at a point in time, it is a better reflection of how well your
diabetes treatment plan is working overall. Your doctor will likely use the
A1C test when you are first diagnosed with diabetes. This helps establish a
baseline A1C level. The A1C may be recommended: 1) twice a year if you
have Type 2 Diabetes, you do not use insulin, and your blood sugar is
consistently within your target range; 2) three to four times a year if you
have Type 1 Diabetes; 3) four times a year if you have Type 2 diabetes, you
use insulin to manage your diabetes, or you have trouble keeping your blood
sugar level within your target range. A normal A1C level can range from 4.5
-6 percent. Anything more than that range, you may have diabetes. The
blood test does not have to be a fasting blood test; it can be done at any time.
