In the 12th century, King Lalibela commissioned the building of some new churches to form a ‘new Jerusalem’. Eleven churches are standing today, carved into a solid piece of rock. Workers started at the top and carved down, creating the roof and walls of the church. They then hollowed out the interior structure. They are known as the Lalibela churches and today are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
