You and Your Spiritual Gifts
Led by Rev. Dr. Susan Ward Diamond & Rev. Diana Hodges-Batzka
To each is given the manifestation of the spirit for the common good. I Cor. 12:7
What is the church, really? At least one
answer to that question is this: The church
is the body of Christ on earth. The Apostle
Paul wrote, “Now you are the body of
Christ and individually members of it.” (1
Cor. 2:27)
The Holy Spirit has given each of us
unique gifts to carry out God’s work in the
world. It is not easy, however, to discover
our gifts or to develop and use them ef-
fectively. That’s why Florence Christian is
offering the course “Discovering God’s
Vision for your Life: You and Your Spiritual
Gifts.”
Where do you fit into Christ’s plan for the
world? The answer lies in the unique gifts
God has given you. This course will pro-
vide a renewed understanding of who God
created you to be and God’s design for
Christian community. You’ll find clues to
your spiritual gifts in the Haugk Spiritual
Gifts Inventory and other gifts discovery
activities. Then you’ll explore opportuni-
ties to further develop and use your gifts.
Pastors Susan and Diana will teach this
course. Sessions will cover such topics as
the following:
Why you are unique
Finding real joy
Where your spiritual gifts come from
Love is the heart of spiritual gifts
Exploring and applying your spiritual
gifts
Beginning on Friday, October 13, at 6:30
PM, the class will continue on Saturday,
October 14 at 8:30 AM until 5:00 PM.
The course will conclude with a Ministry
Celebration on Sunday, October 22 from
Noon to 2:00 PM, which will affirm the
efforts and accomplishments of course
graduates and help individuals explore
their interests and involvement in using
their gifts.
A registration fee of $30.00 covers the
cost of materials, meals and refreshments.
Childcare is available for $10 for the en-
tire course and reservations are required.
Contact Pastor Diana to make a childcare
reservation.
Discovering God’s Vision for Your Life: You
and Your Spiritual Gifts can help you live
your faith more effectively and to develop
wholeness in mind, body, soul and spirit.
Be a part of this opportunity for
personal and spiritual
wholeness.
Celebrate all of God’s creation including the animals in our midst!
Join us Sunday, October 1, at 4 PM in the Meditation Garden (in the Activity Center if it’s raining)
for a special service to celebrate our furry and feathered friends. Bring your pet
(appropriately restrained in a carrier or on a leash) for a brief service and prayer and then
stick around while each pet (and owner) receives a special blessing!
Please bring a bag for waste clean-up.
Can’t bring your pet but still want to participate? No problem! You can bring a
photo of your pet if you wish or just their name. We’ll bless them just the same.
Bring your own chair or blanket to sit on.

Emotional Wellness
Wednesdays at 4 PM Oct. 4, 11 & 18 in the chapel
Led by Phyllis Reed
Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
We all feel the full range of emotions -
happiness, frustration, fear, anger, joy,
sadness, awe, peace - and all these
emotions are God-given. Scripture is
filled with emotion, both God’s emo-
tions and people’s emotions. Your
emotions influence your life as they
inform you, motivate you, and guide
you to do or not do, to say or not say,
and to react or not react.
Being emotionally healthy means you
understand your emotions and you
have control over how you express
them. Your emotions are your con-
nectors, telling you about your world.
It is healthy and natural to feel and ex-
press all of them. It is important, how-
ever, to find a safe place and way to
express them, a place where your
emotions are respected and honored.
Improving your emotional wellness by
learning to express your emotions in a
constructive manner will benefit every
aspect of your life.

WORLD COMMUNION
SUNDAY, Oct. 1
On October 1st let’s give God thanks for
Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pitts-
burgh, PA. Way back in 1933,
Shadyside birthed what eventually be-
came World Communion Sunday. In a
world of discord and distrust, and given
the dismal track record of Church unity
and cooperation, World Communion
Sunday is more important than ever.
RECONCILIATION
OFFERING
Come and join us on Sunday,
October 1st as we worship
God and celebrate the Lord’s
Supper with Christians all over
the world. We will receive our
Disciples’ Reconciliation Offering. This special offering
is used to fund our Church’s mission imperative to be-
come a pro-reconciling and anti-racist church utilizing
experiential education, inclusive worship and intentional
dialogue. Our efforts to promote healing, relationship
and restoration in the family of God are enlivened by
funds from this offering. Thank you
Family of FCC,
Thank you for the wonderful cards with your inspiring encour-
aging words, your caring thoughts and concerns, your many
prayers for healing and strength, beautiful flowers, support,
kindness, and especially your love which shows God`s love. All
was appreciated during my surgery and recovery time. I am so
happy, thankful and grateful to our beloved Lord to be back at
Florence Christian to be with all of you. I missed you.
Thank you for all of your love and support you gave to my
daughters Marie Combs and Debbie Orcena and their families
at this time.

Thank you for the school supplies!
This year we were approached by the Women’s
Crisis Center for school supplies. Once all Boone
Co Schools’ orders were filled, we donated remaining
supplies to the Crisis Center.
“Thank you so much for thinking of Women’s Crisis Cen-
ter. Mike delivered the school supplies yesterday. We will
be able to use everything for the families in our care.
Thanks to all of those that made the donation and for
thinking of us as well. We appreciate it!”
Shana Tucker, Women’s Crisis Center
Florence Christian Church’s continued support and service
providing school supplies to meet the needs of Yealey stu-
dent’s is greatly appreciated!
Your church’s commitment to meeting the needs of those
in our community goes beyond measure - your support of
this center and others in Boone County Schools, along with
countless other missions within and out of our community
bring peace to all - I continue to be awed by the Lord’s
Blessings through Florence Christian’s giving spirit and ser-
vice in His Name.
On behalf of the Yealey families served by your charitable
spirit, I say “Thank you again for your precious service!!!”
Very Truly Yours, Cheryl A. Burns-Kraft, Coordinator
On behalf of the students, families and staff of Goodridge
Elementary, I extend my appreciation for the extremely
generous donation of backpacks and school supplies. By
targeting the supplies we most need, we are able to better
meet our student’s needs.
I take great pleasure in having the support of Florence
Christian in fulfulling our mission to “reduce the barriers to
education” for our students. We could not do this without
your help as a valued partner.
Sincerely, Laura Klein Mosqueda, Coordinator

KIDNEY TRANSPLANTS
Sometimes situations arise that raise
our awareness of the importance of a
topic. Local 12 reporter Howard Ain
has recently been the recipient of a
kidney from a living donor. There's a
member of our church who has a close
family member with the same
need. Please take time to pray for all
those waiting for an organ dona-
tion. Next month we will discuss the
need for all of us who are able to be-
come organ donors.
A kidney transplant is a surgical proce-
dure to place a kidney from a living or
deceased donor into a person whose
kidneys no longer function properly. A
kidney transplant is used to treat kid-
ney failure (also called end-stage renal
disease), a condition in which kidneys
can function at only a fraction of nor-
mal capacity. People with end-stage
kidney disease need either dialysis or a
kidney transplant to stay alive.
Eighty-two percent of people waiting
for organ transplant are waiting for a
kidney. The average waiting time for a
kidney from a deceased donor is 3-5
years. A kidney from a living donor of-
fers patients an alternative to years of
dialysis and time on the national trans-
plant waiting list. The living donor’s
remaining kidney will enlarge, doing
the work of two healthy kidneys.
Living donors should be in good over-
all physical and mental health and 18
to 65 years of age. Some medical con-
ditions could prevent you from being a
living donor. Medical conditions that
may prevent a living kidney donation
may include uncontrolled high blood
pressure, diabetes, cancer, HIV, hepati-
tis, acute infections, or a psychiatric
condition requiring treatment. Since
some donor health conditions could
harm a transplant recipient, it is im-
portant that you share all information
about your physical and mental health.
You must be fully informed of the
known risks involved with donating
and complete a full medical and psy-
chosocial evaluation. Your decision to
donate should be completely voluntary
and free of pressure or guilt.
Family members are often the most
likely to be compatible kidney donors,
but many people undergo successful
transplants with kidneys donated from
people who are not related to them.
For more information about living kid-
ney donation, visit Living Donation.

location, visit the UNOS website.

Research tells us that the most important influence in a
child’s faith is not whether they come to church or youth

raising children and equip them to guide their children’s
faith journeys with our monthly “Date Night” program.

Children Worship & Wonder
Sundays, 9:00 AM & 10:30 AM – Ages 4-7
Children Worship & Wonder is a very special worship experience designed for younger chil-
dren. It is influenced by Montessori ideas and creates a welcoming environment to grow in rela-
tionship with God through ritual, telling our sacred stories, and providing ways for the children
to develop their theological imagination. Children are invited to leave the sanctuary after the
children’s blessing and are escorted to the Children’s Worship Center in the Atrium. Parents are
invited to reunite with their children after the close of worship outside the Children’s Worship
Center in the Atrium.
Kid’s Quest - Sundays, 9 AM and 10:30 AM for ages 8-13
Kid’s Quest is a special worship experience for our older children in an environ-
ment of worship leadership and learning. It incorporates the same scripture as in
“Big Church” and provides children ways to interactively engage with the scripture
lesson and the worship experience. Children are invited to leave the sanctuary
during the children’s blessing and are escorted to the chapel or atrium. After the
conclusion of their activities, they are escorted back into the sanctuary to rejoin
their families for communion.

Sunday worship is when all of us gather as the people of
God to praise God, to connect with God and each other.
At Florence Christian Church we encourage children to
begin worship in the sanctuary with their families. After the
music and opening prayer in a Children’s Blessing, one of
the Pastors and the congregation bless the children to con-
tinue their worship in developmentally appropriate envi-
ronments. Special worship activities for children are also
available during both worship services.
Nursery Care: If you have a little one, nursery care is avail-
able at each service, so please make the choice that best
fits the needs of your family.
As always, children are welcome to worship in the Sanc-
tuary for the entirety of worship with their families. We
welcome their wiggles and giggles, cries and coos! They
are beloved members of the family of God.
