Fly Fishing- An International Sporting Competition
By John Short
Robin Jenkins introduced Paul Bourq, an international competition
fly fisherman as today' s speaker. Paul, a Macon county native, is a
self taught fly fisherman who has turned his passion into a dream
come true. He has become a national and international success while
maintaining his home in Franklin. Prior to becoming a full time fly
fisherman Paul worked as a police officer with the Town of Franklin.
Paul first got into competitive fly fishing back in 2009 when he be-
came a member of the North Carolina fly fishing team. Even though
his first competition wasn't a success he learned from that experi-
ence and fellow competitors that "a sound team basis leads to success". Team North Caro-
lina has become the most successful Regional team in the nation. In 2012 Paul was named
Assistant coach for the North Carolina team and in 2013 he became head coach. Paul has
competed internationally in Portugal, Ireland, Poland and France. He currently serves on a
board which oversees competition fishing and has a worldwide
membership of 33 million members. Working as a team and con-
sistency is a key to his success. He has been able to bring the
spotlight to Macon county and surrounding area by bringing the
World Championships to this area. Paul currently has five televi-
sion shows being aired on several networks and each one features
this area. Next week he leaves for Las Vegas to receive two
awards for his productions.

THE FLYWHEEL
It has been 10 years since we began our mission in Pa-
nama. What began as simply providing school supplies
for students in rural Chiriqui Province grew into a major
project. In those ten years, the people of Western North
Carolina have provided over a quarter of a million dollars
in supplies, labor, and cash donations. Rotary has been an
important part of Proyecto Panama from the beginning
providing supplies, cash donations, and volunteers on
various trips. We have made repairs and in some cases, major renovations to 17 rural
schools. We have provided over 3400 labor hours on these projects. Our Doctors, Nurses,
and aspiring students have seen and treated over 1200 patients (many who had not had
any medical care for years). We were also able to sponsor and bring to Western North
Carolina one of the teachers, Kenia Alvarez. She came on two separate occasions to learn
about education in the U.S., to tell her story, and to exchange ideas. The experience has
been life changing for many of the participants both in Panama and here.
Sadly, in about 3 weeks, the final official journey of Proyecto Panama will be made. We
will be providing supplies and working on a school in an Embera Village. The Embera are
one of the indigenous peoples of Panama who much like our own Native Americans have
been greatly marginalized. We will also have the great pleasure of attending Kenia’s wed-
ding on the 14th of February. If any Rotarians wish to contribute school or medical sup-
plies there will be a suitcase at each meeting for the next several weeks. If any one wishes
to make a cash donation toward the work on the school or contribute toward a gift for
Kenia and her new husband please make a check to the Franklin Rotary Charitable Foun-
dation with either Project Panama or Kenia in the memo line.
Thanks, Rotary, for all the years of caring and participation. We are a community that
looks out beyond our “silo” and sees the need in the wider world. And then, most of all, we
respond!-Sandy Frazier

THE FLYWHEEL
January is Rotary Awareness Month
Celebrate Rotary Awareness Month by training members on Rotary history, pro-
grams, or how to raise awareness of your club’s projects among your community.
Or, ask members to share a personal story or experience
that they have had because of Rotary. Every Rotarian has
a Rotary story that can be educational and inspiring. The
beginning of a new year is a good opportunity to renew in-
spiration for the rest of the Rotary year.
