The future of Jakarta?
Waste reduction and recycling witheconomic benefits
Jakarta produces 28,000 m3 of waste per day.Without any efficient garbage processingsystem, much of this waste is left to createunhygienic living conditions and congestwaterways, leading to flooding.
By recycling, composting and re-using,the Vertical Cleaning Kampung can reduce
Jakartas waste volume. Waste processingprovides jobs and income for the poor andtriggers entrepreneurship. The waste factoryat the base of the building integrates platformsfor traditional and informal trade.
Increased green spaces, reduced floodingTo minimise flooding and improve quality of life, the CentralGovernment of Indonesia recommends that 30% of Jakartassurface area should consist of green areas and open water
(right now that its only 12%) Relocating parts of theoverpopulatedkampungs to these buildings willcreate space for green open areas (as seen in thismap of the central business district), thereby
improving the quality of living as well asreducing the effects of floods.
Commercial viabilityHousing for the poor can be partially paid forby the commercial billboard on the CBD side:commerce as charity.
Furthermore, world aid companies, multinationals, foreign governments ordevelopment organizations could adopt abuilding and contribute to a cleaner, safer moredurable future for Jakarta.
