[Rostock denkt 365°] e.V.

The association [Rostock denkt 365°], organizer of the National Parliament in Rostock, was founded in Rostock’s town hall on 11 April 2007.

The fundamental goals written in founding documents from that day include promoting

• the incorporation of science and research into the city’s society • education • art and culture • international understanding and international networking.

Since its foundation, the association organizes scientific and cultural events and exhibitions for citizens of all city quarters, regardless of their age, social class or profession, to achieve the goals.

On the other hand, exchange and cooperation between scientific and educational organizations between themselves as well as with municipal and cultural institutions, with enterprises and business advocacy representations are promoted. In 2012 the founding ideals were condensed into the motto:

[Rostock denkt 365°] commits itself for a strong, attractive and worldwide recognized

science city Rostock

Prof. Udo Kragl Chairman of the association [Rostock denkt 365°] e.V.

European Student Parliament

Initiated by Wissenschaft im Dialog in Berlin, the project ‘Debate Science! European Student Parliaments’ (EUSP) aims at strengthening the dialogue between students aged 16 to 19 and science research in numerous European countries. Over a period of three days the students will experience parliamentary decision-making processes in simulated parliaments and contribute their own ideas and opinions to the discussions. About 100 students will participate in each student parliament, working on a set of scientific topics and preparing questions in working groups and expert hearings. In the final parliamentary debate – which will take place in a genuine location (e.g. a plenary hall) –, the students will present a position paper that will be handed over to a representative of the hosting parliament. Rostock will be one of the hosts of a National Student Parliament in Germany together with Berlin and Herford. Venue will be the new building of the Institute of Physics of the University of Rostock and the final parliamentary session will be held in Rostock’s assembly hall.

Approximately 2,000 students from across Europe will participate in the national parliaments. 100 of them will have the opportunity to take part in a final European student parliament, which will take place during the EuroScience Open Forum conference 2016 in Manchester. They will have the opportunity to meet and exchange with scientists from all over Europe.

The topic of this year’s EUSP project is ‘The Future of the Human Being’. Subtopics include among others ‘brain research’, ‘stem cells’ and ‘nutrition’.

The project is funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Bayer Science & Education Foundation.

Rostock as a location for science has a diverse research landscape. Especially the topic of this year’s EUSP project is strongly represented not only within the university, but also many companies in and around Rostock perform worldwide leading research in this field, making Rostock a perfect place to host the Student Parliament.

Topics

1. The Human Brain The human brain has been investigated intensively for years. Experts hope for therapies against dementia illnesses, but also human thinking and feeling is a core focus. But how does our brain work? Can we really simulate our brain and thinking? And will we be able to understand and heal dementia illnesses? 2. Living and eating healthy – but how? Organic food is ‚en vogue‘. But what is that supposed to mean? Do we better not eat meat or even animal products at all? Are genetically engineered foods dangerous for our health? Are long-term consequences to be expected? And how can we be sure what is really healthy and what isn’t? 3. Stem cells – the potential allrounders? There would be no man or any other multicellular creature without stem cells. What are stem cells and why is their investigation this attractive – and frowned upon at the same time? How does our life change if we can direct stem cells – and how is that supposed to function at all? 4. Augmented human: optimising the human Glasses and protheses have been employed for many centuries to optimise the human body. As of now a new wave of modifying the body is being initiated: by means of the google glasses or a ring that can name objects using a camera. What will the human being look like in 20 years’ time? Will our skills be extended through implants, drugs or other technical means? 5. Imitating nature Imitating nature through a modular system – that is what synthetic biology is about. Scientists hope for new medication and new pharmaceutical ingredients. How is that supposed to function? How can we imitate new biological pieces, gadgets or systems? And don’t we overstep the mark here?
