Greetings from GCCI!

By the time you receive this E-News Letter, new regime of GST must

have started. GST is a transformational business process reform and this

change should be accepted and adopted by all of us in right spirit. Let’s start

journey with it, solution to problems will emerge in due course of time. India

will have a revolutionary new Indirect Tax Regime that will integrate the

country’s economy and all consumers into a vast, common market.

Major ports of India report significant improvement in cost

optimisation in last three years to establish their efficiency and productivity

to international benchmark.

After a dull period, SEZ exports from Gujarat are back on track and

double-digit growth is expected in Gujrat’s SEZ exports in the financial year

2017-18 with the remarkable contribution from GIFT City.

As report flows, the Central Government has declared heavy

investment in infrastructure for next two years. Such a massive

infrastructure development will surely boost overall development of India’s

Trade and Industry.

We are sure trade and industry will get encouragement under “Start

Up India” scheme wherein Central Government has made provision of

Rs.10,000 crores to accelerate the process of new industrial development.

India’s sea food export has reached all-time high in the year 2016-17.

We look forward for your comments & suggestions for the contents of this

issue.

Going, Going, Gone: Automation can lead to unprecedented job cuts in India

It's like a large server. Except that the grey and orange box has a camera on top and another at the bottom. It

screeches, almost as if to say 'I'm working'. One camera reads the route as it suddenly moves sideways and then

springs forward a few metres before parking below a rack that can hold up to 500 kg of raw materials, finished

goods and parcels. Another screech and it's ready to advance along the rack. In large warehouses, it can move

racks at two metres a second. The box is a robot, part of a storage and order picking system for warehouses that

Gurgaon-based start-up GreyOrange has developed. A large e-commerce warehouse can employ up to 200 such

robots, called Butlers. They can swarm around like bees for 24 hours without tiring; when low on battery, they

automatically dock at a charging station. It takes 30 minutes to charge, or roughly the time humans take for a

lunch break. READ MORE

:Lunch Box Legends

Mumbai’s Dabbawalla

The word “Dabba” colloquially means “lunch box” and “walla” means carrier or delivery man. The dabbawalla are

an incredible organisation of over 5000 people in Mumbai. This organisation was setup in the year 1890 to carry

lunches from home to office for British Administrators. Today it serves a similar function by delivering an

astonishing 2 lakhs plus meals across the city everyday with incredible efficiency and almost perfect accuracy in

order fulfilment.

A dabbawalla takes the lunch box

from a house, delivers it to

destination and return back empty

lunch box to home. This sounds

straight and simple, but is it so? The

journey of dabbawalla starts at 9:00

am with his bicycle. He moves

through Mumbai’s traffic to his

assigned area, move up & down the

multi-storeyed buildings to collect

the tiffin boxes from homes. By the

time he collects around 30 – 40

tiffins, it is already about 10:30 am

and he reaches nearby railway

station where other dabbawallas

from different areas gathers. The

tiffins are sorted as per their destination according to dabbawalla coding system. He and his teammates pickup

tiffin boxes for their assigned destination and

transfer them in head crates. Now they carry it

on the heads and runs towards the railway

platforms. A dabbawalla must catch the right

train where team members help each other to

put the wooden crates inside the railway luggage

compartment. He reaches his alights stations by

12:00 pm and rushes out by carrying the crates

on his head. Thereafter they sort out dabbas as

per their final destination. Once again, they put

dabbas in trollies and run towards the business

centre which are the final destination for these

tiffins. Here they split once again and each

dabbawalla takes the responsibility of delivering

the tiffin boxes for separate buildings. By

moving up & down the sky scrapers through lifts

and elevators, tiffin is delivered at right work place by 01:00 pm. Thereafter, all Dabbawalla will finish their lunch

and will take the empty tiffins from the offices and following pretty much the same process in reverse till the tiffin

reaches home by 06:00 pm. It is a nine-hour work cycle which they are doing it diligently for more than 125 years

by even facing the bad roads, traffic jam, and even Mumbai’s monsoon nuisance. But thankfully dabbawalla is not

alone and whole team delver the job.

The Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce & Industry

E-News Letter Issue No. 16 Date: 06.07.2017

Despites its incredible efficiency, there is very low-tech system

built around train schedules, bicycles and delivery men. The

system, the dabbawalla have developed over the years revolves

around strong team work and strict time management. The

organisation has been recognised and celebrated for their

amazing order accuracy which is estimated at roughly one error

in every 16 million transactions and that is why they have been

recognised as a SIX SIGMA organisation.

The dabbawalla’s success is mainly due to commitment, group

leadership, work culture, satisfaction, attitude, approach,

values, ethics back-up by unique code system. This organisation

is world’s most efficient organisation representing unique

SUPPLY CHAIN management model. That is why many world universities like Harvard University have

conducted research and case study programmes on this working model. The leading personalities and leaders of

the world like Prince Charles have visited and interacted with dabbawalla to get apprised about working and

success of this model.

This supply chain management model really leads to accurate and timely delivery of the supply and hence turns

out to be a guiding model for all entrepreneurs.
