The Census counts everyone in the United States. Census results are the basis for congressional representation and help determine how more than $675 billion in federal funds is distributed each year to support vital programs in states and communities across the country. These funds shape local health care, housing, education, transportation, employment, and public policy.

As the 2020 Census approaches, we will continue to share information about how you can make sure our community is fully represented. Watch for more in the next Gazette.

Taylor Community 2020 Music Series

Meadowlark Trio Sunday, January 19 at 3pm

Janny Joo, Violin; Timothy Paek, Cello; and April Sun, Piano

Formed by three best friends from America’s heartland in 2012, Meadowlark Trio has since performed nationwide to great acclaim. They were named semi-finalists in the 2017 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition. Festival appearances include Toronto Summer Music Festival, Garth Newel Music Center, St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar, Avaloch Music Residency, and Caroga Lake Music Festival, where they were the first ensemble- in-residence. The trio has performed in diverse concert venues, ranging from the Carnegie Room Concerts and Spectrum Music Series in New York, to Bing Concert Hall in California, to house concerts in Montana. The trio’s members received advanced degrees from the Shepherd School at Rice University, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Mentors have been musicians from the Chiara Quartet, Cavani Quartet, Bayla Keyes, and Daniel Shapiro.

Generously supported by Bank of New Hampshire, these performances are free and open to the public with no reservations required. A donation from Taylor Resident Doris Duff helped to make this performance possible.

The NH Primary is Tuesday, February 11

While there is no specific deadline to request an Absentee Ballot, it is suggested they be requested at least seven days before the Election as Voted Ballots are due back on

Election Day at 5pm. Applications can be obtained online, from the Clerk’s Office, or from

Brenda Kean, who can help fax the forms back to City Hall for you.

The following documents are required for Voter Registration in New Hampshire:

Proof of Identity (examples: drivers license, non-drivers ID, or passport — or a Qualified Voter Affidavit may be completed)

Proof of Citizenship (examples: birth certificate, passport or naturalization papers — or a Qualified Voter Affidavit may be completed)

Proof of Domicile/Residency (examples: utility bill, mail with your current address post marked within the last 30 days)

The Supervisors of the Checklist will meet Wednesday, January 29, 2020 between 7—7:30pm for the purpose of making changes/corrections to the checklist (registrations and changes will be accepted at this session), after which time no other changes or registrations will be accepted until the day of the Primary.

All six of Laconia’s polling locations will be open from 7am — 7pm the day of the Presidential Primary Election. Dial-A-Ride transportation will be provided to the polls at 10am for Laconia campus residents; residents should call Dial-A-Ride at 366-1234 to request a seat on the bus, or to arrange their ride at a different time if necessary.

Additional questions regarding voter registration may be directed to the City Clerk’s Office at 527-1265.

Happy Birthday, Dr. King!

Taylor Community Monday Blues

The Taylor Community Monday Blues began in July of 2019 with a lively performance by The Love Dogs – a jump blues band playing rhythm and blues, funk, swing and jazz. It was

loud, it was full of energy, and everyone was thrilled with the performance and asked for more. This experimental programming rapidly advanced to a monthly performance schedule and is now booked through the end of 2020. Incredibly talented Blues artists from around New England are now performing for us! I have always loved The Blues, but opportunities for live performances are hard to find, and when you do, there’s often loud conver-sation that drowns out the performers. That’s the atmos-phere the performers are accustomed to. So, when they come to Taylor Community, and the quiet audience makes them the focus of attention, they LOVE it!

The coming year will bring back some of our favorites, and add some new faces to the mix. Thanks to all of you who have attended regularly and for those of you who have not yet had an opportunity to take in one of our Blues Shows, please join us. It is always a fun time! And remember, the dance floor is always open!

Staff Spotlight Lou Mottola

Lou Mottola is one of the cooks at Woodside who also happens to have a very spe-cial talent for baking. When Lou was 10 years old, in Hammonton, NJ (the blueberry capital of the world), he started working at his family’s bakery, The Ideal Bakery, started by his grandfather after World War II. Lou’s entire family worked at the bakery, includ-ing his mother, father and sister, and as soon as Lou could make dough, he learned to bake bread.

He worked at the family bakery mastering his craft through-out his teen years and in 1994, began to work as a baker at Harrah’s in Atlantic City, just 28 miles from Hammonton. In 2002, he trained and worked as a cook at Harrah’s and did this for two years. In 2004, he moved to Showboat in Atlan-tic City, where Harrah’s combined all of the baking for its four AC hotels, and worked there for 10 years, creating masterful baked items to be served at all of the Harrah’s properties. On a busy Saturday, his kitchen turned out 25,000 desserts for use that day, and on average, about 110,000 desserts each week. Lou did most of the prep and mix work for the baked items, mixing hundreds of batches of batter that would soon become sweet treats for the res-taurants and buffets for each of the hotels. The amount of baking that had to be done is staggering—for example, they used 600 pounds of cream cheese per day to make the desserts—and Lou is famous for his delicious cheesecake.

After many years of high volume and high pressure, Lou and his husband Steven moved to Ossipee, and Lou began work at Taylor in 2016. Taylor is so different (and better) than the corporate, commercial environment and Lou en-joys the variety of the work here. He loves the residents and the staff and feels that he is treated with respect by Glendale, Taylor management and the residents. He en-joys both cooking and baking and we continue to frequently have the famous “Lou’s Bake Sale” where many of his con-fections are featured. For those who cannot eat an entire cheesecake, many of his baked items are for sale by the slice in the refrigerated section at the Bistro. Look for Lou at the Bistro and ask him if he can make you a special dessert. He will enjoy the challenge.

Staff Member Kyle Fugate Promoted to Grounds Foreman

Kyle Fugate has been a big part of our Grounds team here at Taylor since April 2017. In the last two years Kyle has developed a great relationship with both the Taylor employees and residents and he’s always willing to step up to help with any tasks he can. I appreciate that he is always providing new ideas to be more effi-cient. In the last couple years Kyle has taken on more responsibility outside of work, becoming a husband and a great father, and Kyle and his wife are now home owners. With much thought and interviewing, I am happy to announce Kyle has been offered and accept-ed a promotion to the Grounds Foreman. As the previ-ous Foreman and now Supervisor, I fully understand the importance of this role and believe Kyle will not only do a great job in this position, but will also make it even better. If you see Kyle please congratulate him for his promotion, and for the great work he provides for all of the Taylor Community.

Congrats, Kyle!

~ Mike Lord Grounds Supervisor

Coming Soon! Lou’s Feature of the Month will soon be available full-size, with no preorder required. If it’s a dessert, it will be featured a la carte at the Tuesday and Thursday evening meals that month.
