Actor’s portrayal of the characters is commented on saying that Daniel Craig does a good job in his role. The film reviewer then points out an obvious flaw with the reality of the film being that Craig’s character doesn’t have a Swedish accent and all other characters do. This could be a small issue for some audience members and a large issue for others that’s why it’s a key feature of the film to comment on in this review. None the less the reviewer goes on to say the character could easily be overplayed but Craig does a good job of not falling into the easy trap that many actors do, this can completely take you out of a scene if the acting is unrealistic. Giving credit for strong performances in a review is crucial because they are what make or break the film essentially especially for actors in the leading role.

Avoiding comparing to the original film is a good decision because not everyone reading the review will have seen it, also as a reviewer they shouldn’t judge a film in comparison to an existing product, it should be viewed as its own as it has a different director, script and cast so comparing it wouldn’t be fair even though they are telling the same story. The leading actress of Rooney Mara is said to hold its own, and said to be ‘childlike and mercurial’ stating this rather than commenting on whether it’s good or bad. The review goes on to explain why the characters age is withheld making events seem more extreme because you don’t have the confirmation and warns readers of a graphic scene with the use of brackets. Personally I think this scene shouldn’t have been addressed in a review as I think it spoils the viewer experience because the person will expect it, arguably anyone who has seen the other film or read the book will know but regardless.

Referring to the film as one of Fincher’s five finger exercises is another example of the directors vast experience this paragraph being packed film with comparison to previous work, name dropping popular films of his highlighting what they did well and what you could see elements of in this film. The heroism of the leading female character is well done, this is an example of more powerful representations of women in the media, and finishing the paragraph by saying the film has the brutality of seven. This method of telling the reader about the film is effective if all readers have seen the director’s previous films but if not then the comparisons could have less meaning.

The next paragraph begins with a question suggesting by this point of the review the reader has this thought already. The main flaw the critic points out is the film sets up for a trilogy since the ending was similar to the book, but if that trilogy is not made the films ending scene is anti-climactic for a film to be so suspenseful throughout the payoff needs to be something more. The layout of choosing to add the negative criticisms at the end is an interesting approach because this way you are focusing on the positives first so that the reader doesn’t get the wrong idea. The final sentence being a summary of the directors take on the story. Finally the reviewer says that this take on the story was the correct one meaning he approves of the film.
