President’s Message We are so thankful for 4,000 members in more than 80 schools today. The mission of GB is to help every girl develop to her fullest potential by equipping and empowering her to be a community leader. Our programmes provide many opportunities for our girls to grow holistically to become responsible and resilient Servant Leaders. We celebrated our sixth Annual GB Friendship Day over the weekend where more than 1,500 girls and officers came together to Befriend and Serve the Community through Project LENS, an activity to engage the Lonely, Elderly, Needy and those with Special Needs (LENS). It was heart-warming to see so many of you display empathy and respect. The smiles on the many faces you served are testament to your dedication in upholding the GB values of humility, compassion and service. As we look forward to 2017 to celebrate 90 years of Growing Girls, Becoming Leaders in Singapore, you can certainly look forward to exciting programmes, which will engage you to live a life of purpose. There will be an exciting girls’ camp across all age bands for local and international brigadiers. The camp will incorporate a national level community service project where you can apply your skills to contribute meaningfully to the community, and inspire your international friends to do likewise. I would especially like to thank School Leaders, Officers and Volunteers for your support of the Girls’ Brigade. Your support is essential as we nurture our GB girls to become young women who are able to make a difference as they take on leadership roles in the school and community. Honorary Secretary’s Report 2016 Reported by: Charlotte Lee, Honorary Secretary Excitement was in the air as we made preparations to celebrate God’s goodness for 90 years of Girls’ Brigade in Singapore in the coming year. The organisation has come a long way all these years in its mission of equipping and empowering girls to be leaders imbued with Christian values. We will continue to take the challenge of remaining relevant and meaningful in the midst of all the options that are available in schools, the rise of social media and the various digital platforms. Looking forward, let us continue to touch lives and grow leaders. May our girls find true enrichment of life and grow, and impact lives in their communities. We continue to praise God for our 3714 girls and 683 officers and teachers/church volunteers in 81 schools. We have 39 Primary and 42 Secondary school companies. 1. HIGHLIGHTS OF 2016 1.1 National Drill Competition

Drill Competitions are organised every two to three years to raise the overall standard of drill in The Girls’ Brigade Singapore (GBS) and to instil excellence in all GB girls. GB companies prepared for the National Drill Competition over months of tough and strenuous training. This year, it was held at Nee Soon Camp on 12 and 19 March. The competition was categorised into (1) Junior Category, (2) Senior Category and (3) Pioneer Category. The Junior girls competed in Creative Drill routines whereas Senior and Pioneer girls competed in Format Drill. A total of 89 teams participated - 30 Junior Teams, 20 Senior Teams and 39 Pioneer Teams. Congratulations to 30th Company for attaining the Best Big Team under the Junior Category, and 19th and 69th Company for winning the Challenge Shield under the Senior and Pioneer Category respectively.

1.2 Awards Ceremony

The Annual Awards Ceremony was held on 16 April, at Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Secondary). Mrs Tay Poh Imm, International Vice-President (Asia Fellowship), Vice-President and Chairperson GB Fellowship, GB Singapore, was the Guest-of-Honour. Awards were given out in recognition of the achievements of our GB companies in 2015 (Annex A). Besides the regular awards, we were especially proud to present Sustained Achievement Award to GB companies that have sustained five golds in seven years, and Sustained Gold Awards to companies that have sustained five or ten consecutive years of Gold Award. Winners of the National Drill Competition were also presented their well-deserved awards.

1.3 GB Friendship Day 2016

GBS continued to connect GB girls and officers to special segments of the Singapore community, to befriend and serve the LENS. The GB Friendship Day (GBFD) was held on 16 July at the open ground in front of Toa Payoh Library. Into our sixth year, this annual national event enabled 1,751 GB girls, volunteers, grassroots leaders and community/corporate partners to express their love and service to the 1,551 invited special guests drawn from those in the GRC Toa Payoh community who were the Lonely, Elderly, Needy and those with Special Need (LENS). GB Patron, Mrs Mary Tan, wife of President Tony Tan Keng Yam, was the Guest-of-Honour.

1.4 UG Carnival

We participated in the UG Carnival organised by Ministry of Education, held in July at the Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza. The objective of the carnival was to increase public awareness of the programmes run by the Uniformed Groups (UG) in the schools. The carnival showcased how UGs can develop character, leadership and life skills in the students, and how UGs provide opportunities for members to serve the community. A total of 118 GB girls from 3rd S, 7th, 9th, 18th, 31st, 40th, 45th, 50th, 55th, 64th, 65th and 84th Company took part in manning the GB booth, while helping the visitors at the booth with the various arts and crafts.



2. INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION 2.1 Girls’ Brigade International Council

Mrs Tay Poh Imm, International Vice-President (IVP) of Asia Fellowship, attended the annual International President’s Committee meeting held on 27 – 30 June, at Nassau, Bahamas, the Caribbean.

2.2 GB Asia Officers’ Conference The GB Asia Officers’ Conference (GBAOC) meeting was held on 1 - 4 July at Lantau Island, Hong Kong. There were 117 participants from GB Brunei, GB Hong Kong, GB Malaysia, GB Philippines, GB Singapore, GB Cambodia and GB Indonesia. A total of 14 officers from Singapore had an enriching, fun and a good time of fellowship.

2.3 GB Asia Fellowship The GB Asia Fellowship (GBAF) meeting was held on 4 - 5 July at Lantau Island, Hong Kong, following the GB Asia Officers’ Conference. This year, the theme was ‘Grasp the Vision, Live the Mission: Be Courageous’. The GBAF representatives were from GB Brunei, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore, and observers, GB Indonesia and Cambodia. The Singapore delegation was represented by Mrs Evangeline Chong (Brigade Commissioner), Mrs Caryn Ong (Deputy Brigade Commissioner) and Mrs Charlotte Lee (Recording Secretary), together with IVP Mrs Tay Poh Imm (GBS President) and GBAF Advisors, Mrs Sally Chew and Ms Hee Piang Chin. It was a blessed time and bonding among the GBAF members. The objectives of GBAF are:

Fellowship among member countries Equipping of Leaders from member countries Encourage member countries through keeping members informed of burdens and blessings Teaming together to pursue opportunities for extension of GB mission and ministry

GBAF aims to be the FEET of GB International teaming together for the extension of GB Mission and Ministry. Our programmes aim to impact the girls and the community.

2.4 GB in Asia GBS continues its community development efforts and outreach in partnership with churches in their missions’ efforts to work amongst the women and children in several countries in Asia. We adapt the GB programme framework to be relevant and focus on literacy and lifeskills for girls and women in Asia.

3. NATIONAL EVENTS 3.1 Fast Food & Fuzz Camps

Fast Food & Fuzz (FFnF) Camps are in its 10th year running. It was first introduced in 2006 with the purpose of teaching girls to give thanks and to appreciate what they have. This year’s FFnF Camps were held on 2 - 3 July, 6 - 7 August and 13 -14 August. A total of 262 girls from 32 primary companies attended a two-day one-night camp away from the usual fuss from their parents and domestic helpers, and eating simple meals, such as porridge with preserved vegetables and braised peanuts. They experienced, through simulations, the conditions children from third world countries face daily. Girls were taught to appreciate and not take for granted the things they have, giving thanks in all circumstances and praying for people in need.

3.2 Promotion Service

The annual Promotion Service was held on 9 July at GB Centre. Congratulations to six Staff Sergeants for receiving their Pioneer Brigader Brooches (Annex B)! A total of 29 officers also received their long-service awards at this service.



3.3 GB Day GB Day was held on 18 July. GB members turned up in GB uniform in the various schools to commemorate the day. The message from our Brigade President, Mrs Sally Chew, was read out during the school assembly.

3.4 Brigade Fortnight Brigade Fortnight, an annual fund-raising project, was held from 17 to 31 July, with GB girls and officers soliciting donations from friends, family, well-wishers and supporters. We are very thankful to all who donated and contributed to the collection of S$656,730 to support the work of GBS. We would like to thank the donors for the generous support. In big and small ways, GB will continue to link hearts and hands with individuals and families to serve the communities.

3.5 National Day Parade

This year, 2016, marked the start of Singapore’s next 50 years. Themed ‘Building Our Singapore of Tomorrow’, the National Day Parade returned to the National Stadium for the first time in 10 years, at the new Sports Hub. A total of 41 girls from 1stS, 2ndS, 3rdS, 4thS, 5th, 6th, 10th, 19th, 28thS, 31st, 34th, 40th, 42nd, 44th, 46th, 47th, 48th, 54th, 55th, 56th, 64th, 70th, 71st and 79th Company participated in this memorable parade. Our girls marched with pride in the contingent led by Contingent Commanders WO Eunice Lim Shu Xian (47th) and WO Low Ai Ling Gladys (18th Company).

3.6 National Camp 2016

Theme ‘Building Our Singapore Future Together’, the National Camp was held at Amoy Quee Camp on 26 – 29 August. Assistant Brigade Commissioner, Ms Jenny Gan, represented GB at the Planning Committee level meetings. A total of 40 girls attended the four-day three-night camp promoting a ‘Can Do’ spirit of our youths through interesting and tough activities as well as learning relevant and applicable life skills. Ms Ng Shi Hui (Captain, 18th), Officers, Ms Clarissa Chan (44th), Ms Teo Ai Xia (51st) and Ms Jenny Nah (75th), WO Esther Mak (84th), Ms Lisa Ann (GBHQ staff) and tertiary girls, SSgt Nicole Marie Christopher, Sgt Lim Qi Min, Sgt Julia Kwek, and Sgt Beatrice Chan helped in running the camp.

3.7 Officers’ Retreat

The Officers’ Retreat, themed ‘Be EmpoWEred’, was held on 3 - 4 September at Village Hotel Changi. At the end of the retreat, a total of 176 officers, teachers and helpers were empowered and refreshed to serve! Mrs Mildred Tan, the keynote speaker, delivered the message on ‘Service with A Purpose (Ten Principles of Servant Leadership)’ and closed with a video on Leadership Style – What style are you? Mrs Diana Chee shared the Word on ‘What is your Why?’ The retreat closed with a challenge from the Brigade President, Mrs Sally Chew – ‘WOW Our World’.

3.8 Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is held annually worldwide to honour those who had fought during the World Wars. On 13 November this year, members of the SAF Veterans' League, the Ex-Services Association of Singapore, Uniformed Groups and the public paid homage to those who sacrificed themselves during the World Wars. A total of 20 girls from 40th, 64th and 65th Company attended the ceremony at the Kranji War Memorial in remembrance of the war heroes.

4. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

The GB Programme focuses on developing the leadership potential of the girls in alignment with the fourfold objectives of The Girls’ Brigade – Spiritual, Physical, Educational and Social, and the vision of making ‘Every Girl a Leader’. The programme is wholesome, with emphasis on the four F’s – Fun, Friendship, Fellowship and Fullness.

5. ACHIEVEMENTS 5.1 Junior Brigader Brooch (JBB)

The Junior Brigader Brooch, the highest award for a Junior girl who has successfully completed the Junior Programme, was introduced in 2015. The girl would have undergone training that equipped her with relevant knowledge and skills to lead confidently. The training aims to inculcate in her the values of reverence, respect and a sense of responsibility. She would have made significant contributions to her GB company, demonstrated good leadership abilities and has been a good role model for other members and at home. A total of 40 girls from 1stP, 2ndP, 4thP, 12th, 16thP, 20th, 22nd, 28thP, 30th, 41st, 43rd, 53rd, 57th, 76th and 77th Company received the JBB awards (Annex C).

5.2 Pioneer Brigader Brooch (PBB)

A total of 20 girls from 1stS, 28thS, 42nd, 45th, 48th, 54th and 84th Company attended the PBB Selection Camp. Girls have to obtain at least 75% in the Brigade Knowledge Test before they qualify to attend the Selection Camp. Throughout the camp, the girls were assessed on their conduct and leadership skills. Upon final overall assessment, six girls were awarded the Pioneer Brigader Brooch for 2016 (Annex B).

5.3 National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) A total of 36 girls from 26th, 31st, 46th, 50th and 71st Company received the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) Silver Award and 65 girls from 18th, 28thS, 44th, 46th, 47th, 50th and 71st Company received the NYAA Bronze Award.

6. WELCOME AND CONGRATULATIONS!

We extend our welcome to 20 newly appointed Chaplains to 25 companies.

We congratulate 11 officers who were appointed as Captains.

We congratulate 21 officers who were promoted to the rank of Cadet Lieutenant and 23 to the rank of Lieutenant.

We congratulate 8 girls who were promoted to Warrant Officers (WOs).

7 GRANTS AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

We are grateful to the Ministry of Education for the Uniformed Group Training and Capitation Grants. We also acknowledge with thanks the Temporary Occupation Licence grant for GB Centre and the grant from Care & Share projects. Our grateful thanks to all our GB supporters, partnering churches, parents of our members, well-wishers and members of the public for their kind donations. Special thanks to many who contributed to the work, gave their time and talent, and to all who have supported the GB work in one way or another.

Let us exhort one another to grow individually and as an organisation, establishing a distinctive identity within and beyond the schools. As a Christian uniformed organisation, let us continue to teach Christian values, build character, develop leadership and life skills, and challenge members to serve the community in Singapore and beyond.
