Trustees begin talk on new wellness center

A presentation in preparation for an official proposal for a brand new health and wellness center headlined the January 18 Board of Trustees meeting.

The Master Facilities Plan approved at the October 19 Board of Trustees meeting featured a number of proj-ects and campus improvements that Moraine Valley would be looking into completing over the course of the next 10 years; a health and wellness center was one of them.

Ken Gorman CEO of Power Well-ness, Brian Hummert VP of Power Wellness and Dominick Demonica of Demonica Kampert Architects teamed up to give a preliminary pre-sentation to the board on what fea-tures a health and wellness center on the Moraine Valley would have, as well as the costs and impact on the com-munity it would cause.

Gorman presented the board with features that a institution of Moraine Valley’s size would be able to include in its facility. He also informed the school of the role Power Wellness could play in the management and planning of the health and wellness center would be.

The food options for Moraine stu-dents have changed for the spring se-mester of 2012 as Sodexo, the compa-ny that runs Café Moraine, introduced El Ciclone Del Taco and the Cyclones Subs cart.

El Ciclone Del Taco will take over the space used during the last semester by Zaragoza’s in the U building. El Ciclone Del Taco will continue to offer a vari-ety of Mexican themed cuisine just as Zaragoza’s did, but will now be operat-ed by a group of student workers hired during winter break. The menu for El Ciclone Del Taco will not feature the same variety as Zaragoza’s previously had, but will serve staples such as beef or chicken burritos, burrito bowls, ta-

cos and salads.The second addition to food ser-

vice on the Moraine campus will be the Cyclone Subs cart that will begin serving students once the weather is more conducive. Cyclone Subs will be taking over the services provided last semester by Jersey Mike’s. Cyclone Subs will provide an on-the-go version of the subs prepared in Café Moraine in the deli station. The cart will also of-fer fresh pasta salad, potato salad and Caesar salads. As with El Ciclone Del Taco, the Cyclone Subs cart will be run by recently hired student workers.

Aside from Sodexo’s expansion into El Ciclone Del Taco and the Cyclone Subs cart, changes have been made to the layout and format in which Café Moraine will serve students. The en-

Moraine Valley has been recognized by two international organizations for its excellence in financial reporting.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada awarded Moraine Valley with its Certificate of Achievement for Ex-cellence in Financial Reporting for the college’s comprehensive annual finan-cial report.

The Association of School Business Officials International also awarded Moraine Valley with the Certificate of

Excellence in Financial Reporting for excellence in the preparation and issu-ance of the fiscal year 2010 Compre-hensive Annual Financial Report.

The introductory section incorpo-rates the District’s main officials and an organization chart. The financial segment includes the report of in-dependent accounts, basic financial statements, and additional informa-tion.

The statistical section includes se-lected unaudited financial and demo-graphic information. The financial reports section includes Uniform

STUDENT TRUSTEE CORNER | EMMANUEL SANTOYOHappy New Year! I am glad that we

are finally back to start the new Spring semester. This is a fresh start to many and I want to let everyone know that this is a perfect time for new begin-nings, new experiences, and new hab-its. All the stress of last semester is now wiped clean for everyone. Here is a chance to create a totally new se-mester, I just want to remind us all of a few things.

First I want to say I wish every-one the best of luck this year. I also want to re-mind everyone about the things I have been talking about through-out the Fall se-mester. I want to remind everyone to take things as they come, try and focus on the problems of today because tomorrow has enough worries of its own. Also, while we are working hard on the chal-lenges set out for us let us not forget to look around and appreciate that we have not only our life but the beauty of the things around us. Remember-ing to appreciate every minute can help us get through some of the stress that will come our way. When things start to get confusing and difficult please do not hesitate to seek help, re-

everyone of is the bad habits. We all know that it is unrealistic to snap your fingers and have a bad habit go away. It is a challenge that takes time and ef-fort.

nothing to worry about. Even if we do begin to stumble we must remind ourselves that it is okay we just got to get back up and not think twice about it.

Financial Statements, Certificate of Chargeback information; grant fi-nancial statements and enrollment schedules by the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB). The Moraine Valley Community College Financial Report includes accurate and detailed information of every financial activity that consisted within the given year. The Comprehensive Annual Financial

Report is presented in four sections: introductory, financial, statistical and special reports.

After taking a look of the PDF ver-sion of the Comprehensive Financial Annual Report from Moraine Valley Community College’s 2011 fiscal year (and this is a student’s perspective), the content listed was produced in an orderly fashion.

All the material given was up to date

and precise. The introductory section contained a lot of basic information to guide readers who are unfamiliar with the college. The remaining three sec-tions were remarkable thorough and in-depth.

The finance officer’s organization’s certificate is the highest form of rec-ognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and “its attainment represents a sig-nificant accomplishment by a govern-ment and its management,” according to the association’s press release.

“By preparing and presenting an annual report, Moraine Valley validat-ed the credibility of its school system’s operations, measured the integrity and technical competence of the busi-

ness staff, assisted in strengthening their presentations for bond issuance statements, and provided profession-al recognition,” noted the school busi-ness officials.

Moraine Valley’s mission, as stated in the report, is “to educate the whole person in a learning centered environ-ment … value excellence in teaching, learning and service … we are commit-ted to providing accessible, affordable and diverse learning opportunities . . .”

Considering the award that was just received, it is clear to see they’ve achieved just that.

board the fact and figures that go into determining how many student, fac-ulty and members of the community would utilize the facility as well as the estimated costs available at this early stage in the planning. Demonica dis-played mockups and drafts of what the facility would look like as far as floor plan and outside appearance.

Focus groups and surveys were announced as taking place over the course of the next month in prepara-tion for the group’s final proposal that would be presented at the February 22 board meeting.

Tammy Beckwith Schallmo made the first presentation to the board as an update on bond issues the group had discussed during last semesters board retreat. Due to favorable condi-tions in the municipal bond market Moraine Valley will be exploring the option of recalling bonds it holds in order to refinance their debt. State of Illinois general obligation bonds are the subject of this refinancing which could help net the school upwards of $1 million if the market remains where it currently is.

The main issue to be discussed by the board involves the establish-ment of a escrow account, necessary for the recalling of these bonds. The board will be looking to come to de-

cision on the matter by the February board meeting in order get the savings counted towards the taxes of the 2011 fiscal year.

Representatives from the South-west Education Center were on hand to be recognized for the center being awarded a platinum certification from LEED (Leadership in Energy and Envi-ronmental design) as recognition for the buildings commitment to green and sustainable energy solutions. The Southwest Education Center scored a perfect score of 52 out of 52 possible points.

President Vernon C. Crawley re-vealed the preliminary enrollment numbers during his address. Accord-ing to his figures, total student head-cout is up 10%, though the school only saw a 4% increase in credit hours. He expressed some surprise at the in-crease that was seen in noncredit en-rollment, which rose 50% from 1200 students to 1900 students.

The Foundation Board announced it annual gala event taking place on March 31. Proceeds will benefit all col-lege programs.

Trustees Patrick Kennedy, Susan Murphy and Mark Weber were absent for the meeting.

Learn to perform ‘green’ magic at Moraine Valley

Steve Trash: Rockin’ Eco Hero will host a free workshop on “green” magic tricks at Moraine Valley Community College on Saturday, January 21, at 11 a.m. The workshop is open to anyone over age 5 and will be held in the col-lege’s Fine and Performing Arts Cen-ter, on campus, 9000 W. College Pkwy., Palos Hills.

Trash, who is performing his live, one-man show at 2 p.m. that day, will share the secrets to several of the green magic tricks from his book “The Magic of Ecology.” Registration is not required for the workshop.

Atrium art exhibit by Luis SahagunMoraine Valley Community College

is hosting “Urban Realism” by artist Luis Sahagun in the Fine and Perform-ing Arts Center Atrium, 9000 W. Col-lege Pkwy., Palos Hills. The exhibit will run until February 9. An artist’s recep-tion is scheduled for Thursday, January 19, from 2 to 4 p.m.

“Urban Realism” is a collection of assemblages composed of burned card-board, screen prints, spray paint, pho-tographic image transfers, paint, and

found objects. Through his artwork, Sa-hagun delivers stories by marrying aca-demia and street art in an attempt to attract younger generations that may be drawn in by the popularity of street art, but who have yet to understand the entirety of art.

tion to hot dogs the area will also serve up polish sausages and brats with the appropriate toppings.

A new system in place is SoGo cards, which will act as a gift card for El Ci-clon Del Taco, Cyclone Subs and Café Moraine. A website will be available to

adjust balances as well as a Facebook page which will provide information on the goings on of all three food of-ferings.

“We have a great facility we are able to use, and our goal is to bring more students to the U building/Cafe

Moraine and be aware of their dining choices especially here on campus,” said General Manage of Sodexo at Mo-raine Valley Roger Hammesfahr.

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a bill that if passed into law, would po-tentially criminalize the free down-load and upload of media files.

Some of its provisions include em-powering the Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies to take legal action against perceived copyright violators. Punitive mea-sures mulled in the bill include but are not restricted to, barring online payment clearing houses like Pay-Pal from doing businesses with such sites, prohibit search engines from linking to such sites, ban online ad-verts on such sites, require Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block such sites, and if all else fail, promise the malefactors who run and use such sites, five year sentence in federal prison.

According to the Library of Con-gress, this bill, which is also known as H.R. 3261 was introduced for de-liberation to the floor of the House of Representatives on October 26, 2011 by Representative Lamar Smith, a Re-

publican from Texas with 31 sponsors. Proponents of the bill enthuse that it is long overdue. This is not the only bill of similar scope currently making the congressional circles. The PROTECT IP bill (Preventing Real Online Threats to

Economic Creativity and Theft of Intel-lectual Property Act) was introduced by Democrat Patrick Leahy (VT) in May of 2011, and subsequently killed by fellow Democrat Senator Ron Wyden (OR). The Congressional Budget Office

estimated that it would have cost the Federal Government $47 million to hire and train 22 special agents and 26 support staffers to enforce the PROTECT IP bill if it had become law. The PROTECT IP Act was a re-write of the COICA bill (Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act) that also failed to pass in 2010.

One of the major challenges to the bill by its opponents is that it will in-fringe upon the First Amendment of the US Constitution, especially the First Amendment.

On January 18 numerous websites in opposition of the bill conducted a temporary blackout, ceasing opera-tions to raise awareness and demon-strate the hypothetical effects if the bill were to be passed into law. Web-sites including Reddit and Wikipe-dia suspended operations for almost the entirety of the day displaying a homepage that called awareness to

the bill in order to educate the general public.
