India has become a main trading partner of Africa and is growing its investment on the continent. Africa has the raw materials and commodities that India needs to fuel its surging growth. India aid as

model for Africa because its practises hold valuable lessons for developing countries on how to accomplish gradual economic and political revolution.

Indian companies are following to Africa. The Tata Group, for example, has invested about US$ 100 million and plans to triple that over the next three years. India has capitalised in energy exploration in the Sudan and elsewhere. It has also extended credits to West African nations to lift sales of Indian IT services.

The World Economic Forum and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has recently hosted the 28th India Economic Summit in New Delhi, India, from 4 to 6 November.

Held in Asia’s third largest economy under the theme, “Redefining

Public-Private Cooperation for a New Beginning,” the forum brought together leaders in the field of business, government and civil society for a discussion focused on inclusive growth.

The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, the Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, Daniel Kablan and the Vice President of Ghana, Amissah-Arthur were there to stand for the booming African continent.

President Pranab Mukherjee admired Rwandan President Paul Kagame for his country's involvement in preserving peace and security in Central Africa and the Horn of Africa.

"India appreciates the important role of Rwanda in maintaining peace and security in Central Africa and Horn of Africa. The two countries have a commonalty of views on many issues,” Pranab Mukherjee said.

Wassupafrica02SA Tourism cements trade partnership on the African continent

UFP Chairman saves KATH patient

South Africa’s tourism credentials as a leisure destination were put on full display at this year’s AKWAABA travel and trade show. During the three day show, the South African Tourism team pulled out all stops to actively promote South Africa’s unique value proposition as a leisure destination to the West African traveller and trade.

AKWAABA attracts the best exhibitors and buyers from the African and global travel and tourism industry. It is widely regarded as the leading travel trade show in West Africa and a must attend show for exhibitors who want to engage with key members of the trade and gain a greater share of the consumer travel market.

Thulani Nzima, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of South African Tourism, says: “Regional Africa and in particular the East and West African regions, continue to be key growth markets for us. We have invested considerable resources in growing tourist arrivals from this region to South Africa.”

West Africa, more specifically, Nigeria and South Africa have enjoyed a long-standing and fruitful partnership. The two countries have many times spoken of their resolve to strengthen relations and work together for the long-term betterment of an economically vibrant African continent. Travel and tourism has been identified as a key driver in unbridling this potential.

South African Tourism used its time at AKWAABA to meet with the trade, present to them the destination’s value proposition and, most significantly, cement deals which will see South Africa’s destination offering bolstered in

AfDB Reaffirms its Support to Geothermal Development in East Africa

Over the course of the 5th African Rift Valley Geothermal Conference (ARGeo C-5), the African Development Bank (AfDB) has clearly reaffirmed its on-going support to the development of geothermal power in the East Africa Rift Valley region.

The ARGeo conference seeks to further regional cooperation in the development and utilization of geothermal resources in East Africa. It brought together approximately 400 policy, technical and development experts to network and interface with both local and international geothermal companies to explore how to reduce project lead times, leverage financing and effectively manage geothermal power plants.

Speaking during the conference, Thierno Bah, a Principal Energy Specialist at the AfDB, said:”The AfDB is very heartened to witness the significant progress achieved so far in the development of the geothermal resource in this part of Africa. The Bank has worked hard to mobilize various instruments and sources of financing, including the Partial Risk Garantee instrument as well as highly concessional financing from the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), to support geothermal growth and it is encourgaing to see the results of our work beginning to emerge.”

In addition to acting as a key sponsor of the event, the AfDB actively participated in the conference and had the opportunity to address the delegates. Bank representatives highlighted the

AfDB’s previous experience in bringing geothermal projects to fruition and detailed future possibilities for the development of goethermal power in the region. In addition, representatives of the AfDB held productive meetings with a number of bilateral partners to explore the potential for future collaboration.

Throughout the course of the conference, delegates were able to learn more about the internatoinal experience of geothermal development, reservoir engineering, geographical information systems in geothermal develpoment, drilling, business development and financing.

The conference also saw the launch of the African Rift Geothermal Inventory Database (AGID). This database will serve as a repository of information on the geothermal projects underway in the Rift Valley region, including project progress, funding, human resources capacity and equipment available or needed.

During the ministerial-level closing session of the conference, representatives from countries including Tanzania, Eritrea, Malawi and Mozambique highlighted the significance of energy development in Africa and, in particular, the key role that geothermal will play in supporting further growth. Eritrea’s Ambassador to Kenya, Beyene Russom, announced that ARGeo C-6 will take place in Asmara, in 2016.

the consumer space.“The travel trade are a critical

component to the work that we do. During AKWAABA we officially announced our partnership with the National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA) who will help boost tourist arrivals growth from Nigeria to South Africa by developing a range of packages to suit the Nigerian traveller,” explains Nzima.

Growth in Regional African arrivals has been driving growth of South Africa’s tourism industry for many years now. Tourist arrivals to South Africa from Nigeria in particular have enjoyed a steady incline. A total of 84, 589 Nigerian tourists visited South Africa last year (2013). This is a 15.4 % increase to the 73 282 Nigerian tourists who visited South Africa in 2012.

“It’s an upward trend that is truly welcome,” Nzima says.

“However, Ebola has brought about fresh challenges which threaten to put a dent in possible growth in arrivals from the continent. We are thrilled that Nigeria has been declared Ebola

free by World Health Organisation (WHO) and congratulate the AKWAABA organising team for going ahead with the trade show,” he adds.

“Africans should stand together and continue to educate the rest of the world. If we want to continue attracting business and welcoming tourists from all over the world, it is our responsibility as the collective African trade industry to manage these perceptions swiftly.

SA Tourism is also determined in its resolve to help tourists curtail the length of time spent trying to plan a visit to the country.

“Our partnerships with NANTA and other trade organisations are built on our desire to make travel to South Africa as accessible, hassle-free and as pleasant as possible, right from the time a tourist decides to visit. We are working with all stakeholders in country and South Africa to help realise this. What we ultimately aspire to is to equip trade to better assist travellers, in a friendly and cordial manner, with all information upfront” explains Nzima.

A 29-year-old patient at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), who desperately needed a GH¢7,300 to undergo surgery, can now heave a sigh of relief, after the National Chairman of the United Front Party (UFP), Nana Agyenim Boateng, aka Gyataba, paid the amount to cater for the treatment.

Nana Agyenim Boateng, presented a cheque for GH¢7,300 to the Maxilloficial Department of the Oral Health Directorate of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, to enable surgery on the patient to commence.

The patient, James Onyina, is set to undergo surgery to correct an abnormality resulting from the

growth of a tumour of the lower jaw (mandible), which has made it difficult for him to speak, feed and has generally distorted his appearance.

Doctors at the Oral Health Directorate say Onyina, who hails from Juaso in the Asante Akim South District of the Ashanti Region, needs reconstructive surgery to correct the distorted jaw, and to also stop the tumour from further developing in other parts of his body.

He has currently been rendered edentate (without teeth) as a result of the tumour, which started as a small boil under his lower chin.

Presenting the cheque to cover

the surgery, Nana Boateng said he was touched by the sad story of Onyina, and decided to consult friends and relatives to mobilise funds towards his treatment.

“I am a citizen of Juaso, and I could not bear the sight of my brother going through such an ordeal, so I decided to consult friends and associates in order to raise the funds for his surgery,” Gyataba told The Chronicle

in an interview. He said he was hopeful that

the money had come in time for the surgery to commence, so that the patient can be treated and return to normal life.

The leader of the Medical Team, Dr. Michael Yeliborah, said they would fix a new plate to support the lower jaw, and also stop the spread of the tumour, which, he said, could have affected his lungs, and, eventually, seize his breath.

Dr. Yeliborah commended the UFP Chairman for his benevolent gesture, and promised that the team would do well to treat the patient.

President Kagame also cherished India's positive contribution to Africa and articulated his appreciativeness for the contribution of India in the development of his country, predominantly in the field of agriculture and energy.

He said the Rwandan government is intense to boost relations with India by extending and augmentating bilateral cooperation.

“India and East Africa are no strangers to one another. We have engaged in trade for centuries and the economic contributions made by East Africans of Indian origin are an important factor in our region’s dynamism,” Kagame said.

He called the business leaders to invest in Rwanda and East Africa and shape the integration efforts taking place in the region.

Aiming to boost bilateral trade, India and Cote d'Ivoire are looking at increasing the line of credit through the Exim Bank, Prime Minister of the West African nation Daniel Kablan Duncan said.

He also invited Indian companies to invest in Cote d'Ivoire, popularly known as the Ivory Coast, saying that enormous investment opportunities exist particularly in areas like agriculture, mining, oil & gas and infrastructure development.

"I met the vice president of Exim Bank (Export-Import Bank of India). We will increase the Line of Credit as far as the bilateral relation is concerned," Duncan added.

Ivory Coast exports mainly primary articles such as farm produce, while its imports consist of finished items such as pharmaceuticals, automobiles and plastics among others.

Duncan said it would take

24 hours to set up a company in his country and 21 days for that company to get the necessary approvals for an investment project and begin operations.

Vice President of Ghana Amissah-Arthur talked up Ghana’s personality as regards investment in Africa. “You shouldn’t see Ghana as a small country of 26 million people with a workforce of 12 million people but you should see Ghana in the context of ECOWAS,” he told the dozens of business professionals.

“Ghana is a country that has no ethnic tensions. We haven’t had a civil war even though we live in a very turbulent part of Africa.”

He pointed out that the energy sector and infrastructural deficit pose the greatest challenges to Ghana’s development.

“Infrastructure especially in transport and roads [as well as] in energy, we know then that we will be able to provide the basis for the private sector to continue to produce and thrive.”

At the India Growth Outlook session, the panelists tinted the challenges and opportunities India faces as investor interest in the country increases.

They settled that India was on track to get back on the growth trajectory. Foreign investors were equipped to give the government time. Red tape, lack of transparency, acute shortage of skilled manpower were recognized as red flags.

William Danvers, Deputy Secretary-General, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Paris, pointed out that India is at the cusp of an economic turnaround. "Clear

Decision-makers and business leaders, economists and academics from across the

globe have called for increased investment in knowledge and innovation on the African continent.

This is because knowledge and innovation will boost youth employment, foster the adoption of new technologies, and facilitate Africa’s economic transformation.

And as the continent pursues its agenda of “an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena,” success will depend on the adequate accumulation of skills, technology and competences for innovation. This was the message put forward by partners and participants at the closing of the 9th Annual African Economic Conference, which ran from November 1-3 in Addis Ababa.

9th Annual African Economic Conference calls for more investment in knowledge and innovation in Africa

In remarks at the closing ceremony, Adam Elhiraika, Director of the Macroeconomic Policy Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), noted that the conference has become a key platform for knowledge sharing with different stakeholders on issues affecting the African continent.

“We need institutions to help us apply the knowledge for innovation and capacity and skills development,” he said, summarizing some of the key messages out of the conference.

The conference participants emphasized the need to provide incentives for innovation, to enhance the quality of knowledge generation as well as to strengthen private sector engagement to support knowledge and innovation.

For his part, Abebe Shimeles,

Acting Director of Development Research at the African Development Bank (AfDB), observed that among the key objectives of the conference is to encourage researchers on the continent to bridge the gap between research and development policy.

“Economic policy-making without evidence it is no better than a wish list,” he said, underscoring the need for good economists and quality research on the continent to facilitate policy-making.

At the closing ceremony, Abdoulaye Seck, lecturer at the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, emerged as the winner of this year’s best paper presentation.

In his paper entitled “Does the global spread of technology benefit the growth of countries in the Economic Community of West African States?” Seck explained that the process is based on two main channels: importing goods that incorporate new technologies, and attracting companies from relatively advanced countries in terms of innovation.

According to him, the results show that African countries,

Sabre and Thomas Cook share thoughts on the future of travel

A glimpse of a not too distant travel future was shared by speakers from Sabre and Thomas Cook at the WTM Travel Innovation Summit in association with TTI.

The event, held at World Travel Market, the leading global event for the travel industry, highlighted how some existing technologies are being experimented with in travel as well as what we might see going forward. Sabre innovation manager for EMEA Joakim Everstin shared three technologies the company is watching and experimenting with as well as two 'wild cards.' From a prototype developed by Sabre Labs harnessing data and advances in location to show travellers progression through airports to a project analysing text around hotel images from Instagram and flight search application for devices such as Google Glass, Everstin demonstrated the rapid pace of change. His 'wild cards' were virtual reality and using

the technology to explore real people and places virtually and multi-sensory interactions where the senses such as sound and touch can be combined with data and perhaps used to present information in more user-friendly ways.

John Straw, chair of the Thomas Cook digital advisory group, shared some insight on how the travel company is trying to innovate against the back drop of so much technology disruption. He too highlighted technologies such as augmented reality and wearables and how they can be integrated to improve the travel retail experience online and offline and increase conversion. Both speakers concluded that rather than a technology backlash, we would see faster adoption rates especially amongst younger generations and that it was a matter of taking cutting edge technology and creating something useful out of it.

including those in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), have effectively benefited from the spread of world technology in terms of economic growth. However, he stressed that these gains in growth are weaker than those in other developing countries. Ayodele Odusola, Chief Economist and Head, Strategy and Analysis Team, at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Africa, noted that the African Economic Conference not only provides a platform for capacity building for young researchers on the continent,

but also advocacy for pertinent issues affecting Africa.

Continuous investments in education, research and development, structured on-the-job training programmes, and the establishment of technical training institutes were also identified by the participants as ways of engaging the youth and boosting the participation and empowerment of women.

Governments, private sector, academia and the civil society need to act as complimentary entities and not as competitors in the development process.

and consistent communication between the government and the electorate would go a long way in building trust."

Danvers said that the government has sent out the right signals by communicating to the people what it is doing and what it intends do. However, the biggest threat the government faces is about living up to unrealistic expectations.

Anand Mahindra, Chairman and Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra, was optimistic. He said that after paralysis, the country was moving in the right direction. "The Indian economy is a giant flywheel and needs a number of shoulders." Mahindra highlighted that India does not need just the big bang reforms but steady, consistent reforms. "It imperative to clean the pipes and make life easier for the small and young enterprise." He insisted the government to just remove the hurdles.

"We have made a 100-metre race into a hurdle race." Mahindra also said that a great pull factor for the industry to increase investment again would be if the government can give visible timeline for clearing stalled projects. "That's when we will witness revival on the ground and the investment climate shall improve."

The World Economic Forum is a world-wide institution dedicated to enlightening the state of the world through public-private cooperation in the spirit of global citizenship. It engrosses with business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.

traffic following port modernization measures. The economy of Benin remains

reliant on existence agriculture and cotton. Cotton accounts for 40% of GDP and roughly 80% of official export receipts. There is also production of textiles, palm products, and cocoa beans.

Maize (corn), beans, rice, peanuts, cashews, pineapples, cassava, yams, and other various rhizomes are grown for local subsistence. Benin began producing offshore oil in October 1982. A modest fishing fleet offers fish and shrimp for local subsistence and export to Europe.

Benin, a country situated in the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa, is surrounded by

Togo to the west, by Nigeria to the east and by Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. Though the capital of Benin is Porto-Novo the seat of government remains in Cotonou, the country's leading city and economic capital.

Benin is situated in an area about 115,000 square kilometers (42,000 sq. mi) and the population is approximately 9.98 million. Benin is a country which is highly dependent on agriculture. The country has a great latent for tourism as it has an ironic cultural heritage, diverse scenery, and astonishing national parks.

Flourishing EconomyEconomic activity has been risen in the country due to:i) An increase in agricultural

production due to the incentives given to farmers and due to the fortification of the governing framework for agricultural production and the distribution of inputs; and ;

population is engaged in agriculture. Independent agrarians produce 90% of agricultural output, but only about 17% of the total area is cultivated.

There are many hindrance in the agricultural field like lack of infrastructure, poor utilization

of rural credit, and inefficient and insufficient use of fertilizer, insecticides, and seeds. Around 20% of output is informally traded with Nigeria. Principle food crops are manioc, yams, corn, sorghum, beans, rice, sweet potatoes, pawpaws, guavas, bananas, and coconuts. Benin is self-sufficient in food crops if weather is favorable.

Livestock include cattle, sheep and goats, pigs, horses, and poultry. Substantial measures of fish are caught annually in the lagoons and rivers, while coastal fishing produces a smaller, but growing amount. Most of the fish is distributed to Nigeria or Togo. Shrimp and deep-sea fishing are developing by using modern vessels.

Industry

Industries are there for several palm-oil-processing plants in Ahozon, Avrankou, Bohicon, Cotonou, Gbada, and Pobé. Cement plants at Onigbolo and Pobé, several cotton-ginning facilities in the north, a textile mill at Parakou, a sugar refining complex at Savé, a soft-drink plant, a brewery, and two shrimp-processing plants serve the basic need of the people residing there. Thermal plants positioned at Bohicon, Parakou, Cotonou, and Porto-Novo provide electricity to the industries. Half of Benin’s demand for electricity is encountered by importing power from Ghana’s Volta River Project at Akosombo. Industry accounts for only a small percentage of the gross domestic product but can be established on a large scale. Fishing industry fulfills only local consumption, so does textile industry.

Palm processing facility needs improving. Apart from limestone found in open quarry at ONIGBOLO, deposits of gold,

phosphates, iron ore, marble, clay, are yet to be explored. The growth of off- shore fields at SEME and elsewhere are ongoing. A Benin/Togo hydroelectric power has just been accomplished on the Mono River (the NANGBETO dam). There are attractive industrial projects and probability studies are accessible for some of them.

TradeBenin’s export earnings is

reliant on agricultural products, such as cotton, palm oil, cocoa, and coffee, exported to such countries as Portugal, Italy, France, Thailand, Taiwan, and the United States. One of Benin’s main though underexploited, trade assets is the deepwater port at Cotonou, which serves as a sea outlet for the Republic of Niger and as a secondary port for Nigeria and thus holds a potential to earn profitable customs duties.

Benin habitually imports various manufactured products, machinery, chemicals, beverages,

and tobacco, as well as cereals.American companies are

unswervingly endorsing and intensely cheering the Benin Government. There can be joint ventures between Benin private sector and American companies to carry out industrial undertakings such as canning, paper processing units, glass manufacturing, salt processing units, agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, clothing, palm oil, building materials, chemicals and any other items reflective of an industrial developing nation.

The private sector is in fact in a good position to exploit the country’s potential mainly agricultural, to the full, and its development is essential for Benin’s integration into global value chains (GVCs).

Stanbic bank launches new product

The current rate at which some Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFIs) are clamouring for expensive wholesale funds instead of mobilizing cheaper deposits from ordinary savers is worrying, Millison Narh, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has disclosed.

He stated this in Accra during the inauguration of a new branch of Best Point Savings & Loans Limited at Makola.

According to him, the mobilization of wholesale funds at interest rates higher than Treasury bills raises the cost of funds of NBFIs and results in high lending rates.

'Thus the high intermediation costs ultimately lead to non-performing loans which can result in financial distress. NBFIs, especially the savings and loans companies, must therefore be mindful of these tendencies and adhere to their intended role of mobilizing cheaper deposits from ordinary savers.'

Mr Narh was unhappy with shareholders of NBFIs who use their institutions to finance other businesses through the mobilization of deposits from the public and on-lending same to

The efficient layout of the new facility greatly improves cargo handling with an enhanced flow of goods in and out of the facility.

A TAPA 'A' certified warehouse, the new premises are a world class facility in South Africa, strengthening the country's growth capabilities as the hub for distribution into the region. DHL Global Forwarding is also expecting to reduce its CO2 emissions in excess of 700,000 kg per annum from consolidating its Johannesburg operations into one facility. Emission reduction will be achieved from savings on electricity through the use of solar power energy, and savings on petrol through more efficient and effective material handling at the warehouses.

DHL the global market leader in the logistics and transportation industry

today announced investments totalling EUR 30.5 million by both its Supply Chain and Global Forwarding divisions in South Africa. The investments signal the group's long-term growth plans for the region as it brings state-of-the-art infrastructure, IT systems and world-class services to support businesses operating in Africa.

The company launched two new facilities located in Plumbago, located in close proximity to the OR Tambo International Airport east of Johannesburg. An excellent location for logistics services, the facilities offer the twin benefit of both freeway access and high visibility.

Roger Crook, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding and Freight, Member of the Board of Management, Deutsche Post AG, said “Part of our global three pillar Strategy 2020 is to focus on further expansion of logistics services in the world's emerging markets. Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited has launched a new banking product onto the Ghanaian market, which promises to increase the customer base of the bank.

The new product, dubbed “Stanbic Red Means Go” is an overdraft that allows customers of the bank to be able to withdraw monies from their accounts even when they have no money in them.

Launching the product, Managing Director (MD) of the bank, Mr. Alhassan Andani said the “Stanbic Red Means Go” is an overdraft campaign that turns the traditional meaning of the colour red upside down.

According to him, whereas a red account normally signifies lack of funds and the inability to do the things that matter, Stanbic says a customer can be short of funds and still be on the go with this arrangement.

“Beginning from November 1, 2014 to January 31, 2015, a customer who opens a new salaried account with Stanbic is eligible to access an interest free and fee free overdraft facility for one year.

“When you are in Red with Stanbic, you can still GO because it’s for FREE! Stanbic Bank customers now have the ability to override the red light and get the money they need to do the things they hold dear”, he explained.

DHL Supply Chain's 25,000m² multi-user warehouse facility will be used to consolidate its technology client portfolio, as well as some key fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) clients. The facility has been purpose-built for the technology and consumer industries including speciality designs such as high density storage up to 16m in height for FMCG companies; optimised operational flows; a super flat floor necessary for such high-level storage and retrieval; and the latest technology on reach trucks.

“We are implementing international best practices at Plumbago, and this will become the model for other facilities across the country. Our long-term strategy is to develop warehouses in prime locations - with our well-established networks, we provide daily deliveries to almost all retailers across South Africa with 99.8% on-time efficiency,” said Craig Roberts, CEO, DHL Supply Chain – Middle East and Africa.

“The new space gives our clients the advantage of a better location and warehouse design, planned by the best logistics specialists, as well as increased automated throughput. Such investments are long-term in nature, and reflect DHL Supply Chain's commitment to Africa. We have an ambitious growth strategy for this region and intend to use our South African assets as a springboard into the rest of Africa,” he added.

The facility will offer market leading warehousing management systems, and boasts eco-friendly

features including energy efficient lighting system, and rain water harvesting for vehicle washing. The consolidation and relocation nearer to OR Tambo Airport, client distribution centres and retailers, itself c o n s i d e r a b l y reduces carbon emissions.

The development could affect a lot of businesses that uses Expresso lines for their day to day operations.

'Let me sound a word of caution that shareholders of NBFIs should desist from such activities and respect the limits set in the banking Act with respect to lending to connected entities to avoid an abuse of their licences,' the Deputy Governor mentioned.

He said the rampant roll out of branches required huge investments from shareholders and put pressure on directors and management to ensure adequate returns on investments and at the same time guarantee the safety of deposits. 'In seeking to expand operations therefore institutions are sometimes tempted to deploy depositors' funds into such capital investments which prove counter-productive and I must add that the Bank of Ghana will impose severe sanctions on any regulated institutions that engage in such acts.'

He added that there were challenges with SME financing, adding that with proper systems and innovative financial products, the lack of access to credit by SMEs would be curtailed.

There is certainly something sexy about a girl with a bold attitude and a pair of leather boots. You may have also heard... "Leather is hot in

summer and cold in winter." In reality, leather adjusts constantly to its environment. Because it is a natural product, leather breathes freely, preserving a comfort level in all seasons.

Leather is actually a collective term for all hides and skins, which have been tanned. The diverse look and feel of leather, from one hide to another, is an outcome of the diversity of ways in which the hide can be tanned and the separation of raw, untanned hides obtainable.

Worth to mention, Africa is fast evolving as one of the upcoming bazaars for finding quality leather and hides for the thriving worldwide leather industry. Leather and leather products are amongst the most extensively dealt and collectively used commodities in the world. By now, the total value of annual trade is anticipated at 1.5 times the value of the meat trade; more than five times that of coffee and more than eight times that of rice.

Official international trade in leather and leather goods is projected at over US$ 50 billion a year and the market is far from saturated. In the next decade, the call for leather raw materials (hides) and finished products may surpass supply – building the leather industry one of the most rewarding business sectors in the years to come.

Africa’s profusion of livestock signifies a likely strength for the sector, as leather is a by-product of the meat industry. Africa has about 15 per cent of the world’s cattle population, a percentage that cultivated by about a quarter over the last decade, overhauling the global fashion. Likewise, Africa owns about 25 per cent of the world’s sheep and goat population.

AFRICA SELLING ITS SKIN

We have been putting our heads with farmers and also consumers because in Nigeria we have a need for ‘Kpomo’ (hides/skin) but we have to very quickly make adjustments so that we can get our shoes and bags instead of taking it away by making it into delicacies.

ADAN MoHAMED Cabinet Secretary, Industrialization and Enterprise Development, Kenya

Ethiopian shoe industry faced a bizarre period when cheaper, shinier and attractive plastic shoes from China welcomed into market in 2000. It left local dealers nervous about the possibility of being pushed out of business. The owners of factory were in a state whether to compete with the Chinese or to shift to other businesses.

The country came to know about its huge livestock resources which meant that the country does not lack raw material. Leather policy was brushed up, labor became cheaper and easily available and the demand for local shoes grew. After some development the shoe industry survived and today the sector is attracting visitor around the globe including major player of the business such as Huajjan of China and George Shoes of Taiwan.

More than 30 tanneries and hundreds of factories are making shoes and leather garments today in Ethiopia. Millions of Ethiopians have got employment by the local industry and the earnings by exports of leather exports and garments is growing. It has grown from $76 million to $132 million in the last five years. Nearly $30 million was estimated to come from shoe exports.

By a data on export the Ethiopian leather products goes to mainly US, England, China, Italy, Germany, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Though the exports have been growing, they are under government’s targets, and many locally-made goods or those made using raw material sourced from the country are selling under foreign brands which means that the Ethiopia’s share in world trade of leather and leather products is less in comparison with foreign brands.

Sileshi Zegeye, the Deputy Communication Director at the Ministry of Industry, articulated, “Ethiopian shoes are exported to different countries including China,” while the inauguration of an office by a US company, Brown, which exports shoes to the Chinese market.

Brushing the Leather Policyin Ethiopia

The taskforce in the country has been appointed with a clear brief to share their wealth of experience on how the leather sector can be sustainably developed. With the global leather demand now estimated at more than US$60 billion, we must work hard to grab a share of the cake.

Ethiopia and Kenya are amid the biggest manufacturers of raw leather in Africa.

Luscious Leather Business in AfricaThis places Africa at the midpoint of the thriving leather industry as a crucial supplier of hides and raw materials to the mounting industry of leather and leather goods.

Though, regardless of its significance as a livestock producer, Africa accounts for only eight per cent of world production of cattle hides and about 14 per cent of goat and sheepskins. Additionally, even though African countries frequently place leather extraordinary in standing as an export commodity, leather and leather products usually account for less than four per cent of total exports. This is mainly due to the fact that the leather industry in most African countries remains a shambolic sector.

Nevertheless, gears are now shifting swiftly as more and more countries around the world are looking to spring their chucks for leather and hides from African countries.

Ethiopia and Kenya are amid the biggest manufacturers of raw leather in Africa. Exporters are discovering joint ventures with African companies considering for technical support, know-how and investments.

Countries in the Horn of Africa are one of the largest exporters of livestock, particularly to the Middle East countries. For Ethiopia, for example, livestock and livestock products are the foremost foreign exchange earners, second only to coffee, with hides and skins backing the most.

Other main exporters of live animals are Somalia and Kenya, and to a lesser extent Sudan and Djibouti. Collectively, these countries export a fair share of requirements of the livestock and leather industry worldwide. The coming years can witness these countries developing as foremost performers in the leather industry.

CLoVE1. Temporarily treat a toothache

You can temporarily alleviate the pain by dabbing a little clove oil on a cotton ball and placing it on the sore tooth or on your gums. An added benefit is that it will also pull out any infection.

2. Relieve upper respiratory infections

Ayurveda suggests making a tea to lessen, or prevent, colds and flu. It is also used as an expectorant, making it easier to cough up phlegm. Cloves are a natural painkiller and also attack germs, so they'll help you get rid of that sore throat.

3. Reduce inflammation

Use clove oil to massage sore muscles; some also use it for arthritis and rheumatism.

4. Treat scrapes and bruises

Cloves are pretty strong and can sting, so the best bet is to probably make a poultice with a little olive oil.

5. Improve digestion

Cloves help relax the smooth lining of the GI tract, so they help alleviate vomiting, diarrhea, intestinal gas and stomachaches. Just be careful; since they're strong, they can also irritate the stomach.

6. Enhance sexual health

Sometimes used as an aphrodisiac, cloves can also help men from reaching orgasm too early.

sPorts2WatCh 11Keshi re-appointed as Nigeria coach South Africa's last farewell to slain

football captain

Red-hot Kotoko good enough to represent Black Stars, claims Michael osei

Keshi led the Super Eagles to the African title in 2013 but was sent packing on October 16 after a string of poor performances, including a surprise defeat away to Sudan.

But many believe that protracted political battles inside the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) were behind his dismissal and his eventual reinstatement.

Reports surfaced suggesting that President Goodluck Jonathan had intervened to order Keshi be given a new contract.

The new NFF boss Amaju Pinnick, who emerged on top after an extended power struggle within the NFF, is seen as a Keshi rival, while the sports minister Tammy Danagogo is known to be a supporter of the outspoken coach.

The man named by Pinnick to lead the Super Eagles after Keshi's firing, Shuaibu Amodu had also come out in favour of Keshi's return for Nigeria's upcoming matches. The caretaker coach said he did not have enough time to remake the squad that his predecessor had shaped. The NFF technical committee said it had "decided to accept" Amodu's proposal for Keshi to be re-instated for Nigeria's next Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Congo and South Africa in November.

NFF President Pinnick said he will not oppose Keshi's return.

"I have never had anything against Keshi as a person. Amodu is someone we all respect and since that is his opinion and the technical committee has approved, so be it," Pinnick said.

Ghanaian powerhouse Asante Kotoko have enough quality to represent the Black Stars at the international level, assistant coach Michael Osei has claimed.

The Ghanaian giants have been peerless in the pre-season where they have remained unbeaten after ten games with their latest friendly being a narrow 1-0 win over Ivorian side Tanda FC on.They can boast of the best crop of players in the domestic scene and look like the possible candidate to retain their Premier League crown .The Porcupine Warriors have simply been irrepressible in the last three years where they have increased their trophy cabinet and leaving their arch-rivals Hearts of Oak to play catch-ups.The club's

"I am also assuring Nigerians at home and abroad that the NFF will give Keshi all the necessary support to successfully prosecute the two very crucial final matches of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series," he added.

Nigeria need to not only win both matches but beat Congo by a margin of two goals to stand any chance of automatic qualification for the finals in Morocco next year.

Keshi's return seemed to suggest that the power struggles inside the NFF will rumble on, with the body's leader accepting the return of a coach he had ousted.

Meanwhile, Keshi announced the recall of Spain-based striker Ikechukwu Uche for the two upcoming qualifiers.

Keshi had left Uche out of the 2014 World Cup squad, reportedly for defying team strategy, in a move which sparked furious debate among Super Eagles fans.

Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi, Ahmed Musa of CSKA Moscow and Fenerbache striker Emmanuel

Emenike have also been named in the 25-man squad.

South Africans turned out in huge numbers in Durban for the funeral of national football captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, who was murdered last weekend.

Meyiwa, who had just turned 27, was gunned down by an intruder while visiting his pop star girlfriend south-east of Johannesburg in a crime that shocked the nation.

Family and friends were joined by government members and the top names in South African football among a crowd of 30,000 at the funeral ceremony at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium, broadcast live on television.

The crowd fell silent and many wept as Meyiwa's coffin, shrouded

The goalkeeper had grown up in Umlazi, a township near Durban on the Indian Ocean coast. He was to be buried in the afternoon at the Heroes Acre at Chesterville cemetery, which is usually reserved for martyrs of the struggle against apartheid.

Also attending his funeral were the country's football federation head Danny Jordaan and Senzo Mchunu, head of the government of Kwazulu-Natal, the province where Meyiwa was born, which has decreed a period of mourning.

Being a representative of Zambia to India, kindly enlighten us on the evolution of Indo-Zambian relations and what is your vision to further fortify these ties?

Zambia and India have enjoyed very special cordial and warm bilateral relations from pre-independence times when the leaders of the struggle for independence in Zambia, such as Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, drew inspiration from India's struggle for freedom, particularly from the times of Mahatma Gandhi, and others, namely; Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi who all enjoyed special relations with our First Republican President of Zambia, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda.

My vision for the future is to further strengthen relations between our two countries through closer interaction amongst the private sector such as establishment of joint ventures, particularly in value addition; manufacture and agro-processing, people to people interaction through stronger cultural exchanges, and of course training, including the establishment of Centres of Excellence and also specialist medical facilities in Zambia.

How the Zambian government is addressing the issue of reducing the cost of doing business in Zambia?

The Zambian Government has taken

bold steps to reduce the cost of doing business and in this regard, established the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) that brought under one umbrella five different government agencies, namely: Zambia Investment Centre (ZIC), Zambia Privatisation Agency (ZPA), Export Board of Zambia (EBZ), Small Enterprise Development Board (SEDB) and Zambia Export Processing Zones Authority (ZEPZA), in order to enhance efficiency and effective private sector development in a coordinated manner.

Further, in collaboration with Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and Patents and Company Registration Agency (PACRA), ZDA has established a One-Stop-Shop where businesses can complete all company and tax registration, including application for investment license, under one roof, which has substantially reduce the cost and time of establishing a business in Zambia. And these processes are being decentralized and replicated across the country to take these services closer to the people and areas of business.

The Zambian Government has also signed Agreements for the Avoidance of Double Taxation with a number of countries including India to ease the incidence of tax on foreign investors

Government has also established Multi-Facility Economic Zones where key transport and communication infrastructure is provided and businesses

can manufacture goods for export without paying domestic taxes.

Victoria Falls, a gem in Zambia's crown is blessed with awe-inspiring beauty attracts countless tourists from different corners of the world. How Zambia is getting advantage from the same?

Zambia is indeed blessed to have one of the seven (7) natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls that attracts people from all over the world. As a result of the high numbers of tourist arrivals1 the Livingstone area has developed a very strong hospitality and service industry that has created employment for many Zambians.

You will recall that Zambia and Zimbabwe jointly hosted the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly around the Victoria Falls which offered opportunity to key stakeholders in the tourism industry world over to appreciate the Victoria Falls, which has given impetus to the sector in Zambia.

What makes Zambia the ideal investment location?

Government has created a positive and investor friendly environment, with investment guarantees and security provided for under the ZDA Act and

other legislation, and making Zambia an investment destination of choice.

Zambia also offers attractive investment fiscal and non-fiscal incentives for both domestic and foreign investors. It is worth noting that foreign investors are allowed 100°/o repatriation of profits.

Because of being strategically located in the centre, Zambia offers easy market access to COMESA and SADC regions, EU under the Everything But Arms, USA under AGOA and India under the Duty Free Tariff Preference Scheme (DFTP).

I therefore invite all companies in India and beyond to consider investing in Zambia and be part of the success story. The current Patriotic Front Government has taken steps to root out corruption and reduce bureaucracy and cost of doing business by undertaking reforms that will enhance transparency, predictability and accountability, and these reforms are already bearing fruit.

Which sectors present biggest opportunity for growth and development for both the countries?

The priority sectors include: Agriculture, Manufacturing, Tourism, Energy, Infrastructure, Information and Communication Technology, Health, Education and Vocational Training, and Processing of Agricultural, Forest, Non-Ferrous Metals or Gemstones products.

Zambia’s central location in the region, as well as a combination of key strengths makes it an ideal investment location. Interestingly, this country boasts a profusion of birds, abundant wildlife, and raw and pulsating wilderness. Apart from the Victoria Falls, Zambian tourism takes into account seven waterfalls with awe inspiring and spectacular views. In an exclusive interview to Indo Africa Times, the High Commissioner of Zambia to India stressed the strong and worthy points on collaboration with India.
