2017 PRESENTATION EVENING > Principal’s AddressLast night we held our College Presentation Evening and once again, this was an amazing celebration of the many achievements of Gleeson College students in 2017. The evening began with an incredibly moving and powerful liturgy focused on the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus, followed by the presentation of special awards, the Pursuit of Excellence and Gleeson 10 House Awards, and the presentation of our 2018 Student Leaders. It was a wonderful event and a fitting way to celebrate another incredible year. I reproduce excerpts of my speech below.

It is wonderful to report on yet another amazing year here at Gleeson College. It promised so much and has delivered even more. Towards the end of the year, we have been reflecting on our strategic directions as articulated in our strategic plan, and it is fair to say that we have not only achieved but exceeded our expectations. One of the obvious achievements has been the work around the planning for the historic intake of Year 7 students, and it has been through this work that we have had a lens on many areas of our College. 2017 has been a year where we have taken stock of where we are at as a school community, and we have utilised a range of sources of data to affirm and challenge our thinking, and then responded to this data to ensure that we are continuously improving.

I would like to recognise Mrs Jane Case who after 26 years distinguished service to the College will be retiring at the end

of this year. A Year 12 parent last week reminded me of the enormous impact that Mrs Case had on her child and she was representative of hundreds of parents. Earlier this year Carol Hamilton also retired after 27 years of service, Mrs Stephanie Margitich is also retiring following 13 years at Gleeson, and Mrs Tanya Welden concludes 9 years here at Gleeson College. Mr Nathan Holdinghausen has also accepted a permanent teaching position at Mercedes College. In addition, we also have a number of staff concluding contract teaching positions who are moving off to various roles. I thank each and every one of these people for their commitment to the students in their care.

If, however, there was one event that captured the heart, of Gleeson College in 2017 it was the incredible performance of Grease the Musical. Those of you fortunate enough to have witnessed this show will know what I mean. I have run out of superlatives to describe it, suffice to say that it was a magical event and one that we were so proud of. It captured the heart, One Heart, because it demonstrated everything that is great about our school. Anyone who wants to be a part of our musical production can be – it doesn’t matter if you are the insanely talented Cherie Surman, or if on the other end of the spectrum, you have a voice like mine. You are welcome, you contribute to the best of your ability, you care for the other, and you end up with a spectacular result that shares your gifts and talents with others to

make them feel good as well. All of this under the drive, energy, attention to detail and pursuit of excellence of an amazingly committed and talented staff. Grease provided an analogy for what I want this school to be – a place where all are welcome and all can flourish to feel good about themselves and their contribution. Grease was the indeed the word in 2017.

2018 is the 30th year of Gleeson College and we are so looking forward to celebrating this milestone in a number of ways. I am convinced that Archbishop James Gleeson would be looking down at the progress of this school and would indeed be very pleased with what he could see. He asked of us to be of One Heart in every aspect of our life and mission. We continue to strive to be so – and when I reflect on the contribution of the many people I have acknowledged tonight – I know that each one of these believe in and strive to fulfil this mission.

I wish you and your families a wonderful Christmas holiday and as members of a Catholic community that we all work hard to keep the “Christ” in Christmas, and reflect upon the true meaning of the festive season, the love of God. John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

May you experience the peace and joy Jesus brings this Christmas time

with friends, family, and othersnew in your life.

Mr Andrew Baker,Principal

Middle School Creative Writing Awards 2017In Year 8 and Year 9 English, all students this year were involved in

composing a piece of creative writing that involved a challenge or race at Year 8, and a Quest at Year 9. These tasks have become a Gleeson tradition

going back many years. Teachers selected the best pieces of work from their classes to be put forward for judging.

This year the competition was judged by Mrs Stephanie Van Rossen, whohas been an English teacher at Gleeson for several years, and is currently

on maternity leave.

The winner of the Year 8 “Ace of the Race” was Taylah Viskic (8 HMCRE). Mrs Van Rossen described her story as a gripping and enjoyable read. At Year 9, the “Best of the Quest” award went to Eliza Dodson (9 MMBON).

Mrs Van Rossen commented that it was beautifully written story, engagingand enjoyable. The winners were both presented with a certificate and a

$50 Westfield voucher at the Year 9 Graduation Assembly.

I encourage all Middle School students to try their best next year to be nominated for one of the Creative Writing Awards. We are proud to announce

that in 2018, the competition will also be extended to our Year 7 students.

YEAR 9 HISTORY > The Battle for ‘Gleeson Hill’

The Year 9 History Class concluded their learning of World War I history topic with a reflective re-enactmentof the battle on the Western Front.

‘Gleeson Hill’ was hotly contested by both teams with weaponry including

gas, airplane bombing, artillery, tanks and super soakers of various sizes and capabilities. The team on the

plains (located at the base of Gleeson Hill), although at a disadvantage,

demonstrated superior strategical tactics and won the battle!

Well done to all students for their enthusiastic participation.

GLEESON SOFTBALL > Students v Parents Showdown a Classic!

Last Saturday saw our Gleeson Saturday Morning Softball Team take on their parents in an end of season showdown. The competitiveness from students

and parents alike was ripe as we saw and heard much banter takingcentre field of the game!

This game was a great show of sportsmanship, and allowed the parents to take a trip down memory lane to when they were teaching their children

how to play. With diving catches and celebrations to some tactical balls, and even walking them to bases, the match provided much entertainment and

enjoyment. The students led after the first innings, however the parents (who said they needed a longer warm up!) came back with vengeance and found

their rhythm to narrowly win the showdown in a 9-8 nailbiter.

This was a great event to wrap up the 2017 Softball season, and we thank all the players and their families for taking to the diamond in what we are sure

will become an annual event.
