STATIONS OF THE CROSS > With a Modern Twist!

On Wednesday, our community witnessed a beautiful modern day
version of the ‘Stations of the Cross’.
A sacred part of Holy Week is the ritual of hearing the Passion of Christ, which
occurs on Good Friday where we witness the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus who
taught us to show true love and humility, which ended with such sadness in his
death by the hands of many. It was in his resurrection that we are able to share in eternal life. As we reflected on the steps he took up to the mountain to where he was crucified we listened to the story of the passion and contemplated how we
show true love to everyone we encounter.
At Easter time there are so many rituals that families participate in, going to the shack, big family lunches, time praying
and reflecting together or a possible hunt for Easter eggs. This leads me to
think what my family rituals are and the importance of these in strengthening
the bond of our families, father/mother to child, husband to wife, son/daughter
to parents and so on. Family rituals help build a sense of security and
predictability, and say “this is who we are” as a family. When over the years,
moments of uncertainty and insecurity inevitably visit us, a history of rituals
provides a robust template of belonging and meaning to take into our adult years.
I leave you with this thought to for this upcoming Easter break:
“Strong connections are built on the small, loving things we do and say regularly, not
the one-off bells and whistles outings that end up on Facebook!”
What are going to be your rituals as a family this weekend? Maybe it is time to
start a new one!

WISHING FAMILIES A HAPPY & HOLY EASTER!
What a wonderful term! I continue to be astonished by the depth and breadth of experience that occurs here at Gleeson College and I wish to thank all staff, students and parents for your engagement and support of our school. We have had a brilliant Term 1 for 2017, and I am deeply appreciative of everyone’s efforts.
People often ask just how could I be a teacher, and even more so a Principal. It is hard to explain to someone who has not worked in schools for the 25 years that I have, just how exciting and amazing it is to be able to spend every working day being inspired by the young people that I am fortunate to interact with. Every day I am amazed by the sheer goodness of young people and their view of the world. Quite often, the inspiration I gain from students is displayed in the smallest of gestures and conversations.
• I am inspired at the beginning of the year when our new Year 8 students join our community and instantly add vibrancy and energy to our school.
• I am inspired when I watch our Year 11 RE Youth Ministry Class facilitate the Year 8 Retreat – providing deep and rich, faith learning experiences.
• I am inspired by the Year 8 student who bought along enough Tim Tams for the 23 Year 11 students that facilitated the Retreat because he thought they did such a good job for their first time! Beautiful.
• I am inspired every time I watch our talented Performing Arts students on stage.
• I am inspired when I witness our students proudly speak about our College, and their special place in it, during tours on Open Evening.
• I am inspired in the overwhelming sense of community that permeated our Athletics carnivals.
• I am inspired by the beautiful voices in our Choir, and the reverence shown by all students, at our Stations of the Cross Liturgy yesterday.
Sometimes we just need to take the time to look around us at the simple things that should inspire us and that we are privileged to be a part of. Thank you all for your efforts in Term 1, as I said, it has been a great start to 2017. I trust that all of our students are all well on their way to achieving the goals they have set themselves this year.
Our Year 12 students are almost a third of the way through their academic year, which is a sobering point. What I do deeply appreciate about our Year 12’s is all that
they add to Gleeson College - these are a very generous group of young people who give to our community in immeasurable ways, and for that I sincerely thank them.To our Year 8 students - thank you for all that you have also brought to Gleeson College. You have really impressed with your attitude and work ethic, and as a collective, you have made a great start to your five years here at Gleeson - well done!
I trust that the upcoming holidays are a time of renewal and re-charge and that all are able to spend quality with those you care deeply for, and I look forward to the many wondrous moments that Term 2 and the remainder of the year will provide.
I also hope that all of our families take the opportunity this Easter to reflect deeply on the true meaning of this most sacred season.
Andrew Baker, Principal
The thoughts, prayers and support of our Gleeson College Community are

Gleeson College students and staff
were blessed to attend a
Remembrance Mass in honour of
our College patron, Archbishop James
Gleeson, at the Adelaide Cathedral
last Wednesday.

After review of our current Private Bus Services shared with Pedare,
we have made some updates to our three current services and have also
added a 4th new service.
We will now conveniently service students via the following four
Private Bus routes, starting from Week 3 in Term 2 (Monday 15 May):
• Newton/Tea Tree Gully Service• North East/Lightsview Service• Salisbury/Greenwith Service• Mawson Lakes Service
**IMPORTANT UPDATE TO START DATE**
Due to some final adjustments to the routes and timetable, the new services will now commence on
Monday 15 May 2017
The Archbishop Mass was a lovely success with the Gleeson, Kennedy and Killian families all remarking that the highlight of the Mass was our talented Choir! Thank you so much to Gleeson
Arts Coordinator, Mrs Carly Meakin, and our wonderful Liturgy Choir, and to all our students who offered their time in assisting with readings and greeting
people at the door.
It was truly an amazing celebration.

YEAR 8 RE + ITALIAN LANGUAGE > From Lent to EasterAs Easter draws nearer, our excitement grows with the thought of our Risen Lord and how we are going to celebrate in our homes with family.
Younger generations tend to exacerbate that excitement by thinking of the Easter eggs and the very young anticipating the garden-search for them! However, at the other end of the scale, what about our older generations? To what do they look forward to this Easter? We think especially of those who now reside in nursing homes or aged care facilities who may reminisce of their own earlier Easter celebrations at this special time.
This morning, my Year 8 Class stopped for a moment to think about the senior citizens in our community, and especially those who may not have visitors at this time of year. They excitedly decided to make some specially crafted Easter cards, incorporating learning from our Italian Language Class, which we will deliver to some aged care facilities during this Holy Week.
Well done to all students for their enthusiastic engagement and for using their own creativity to help bring a smile to someone’s dial this Easter!
Mr Nicolas Civetta,Year 8 RE & Italian Languages Teacher
Following are some reflections from Year 8 students involved:
“What we did this morning was a truly amazing and kind thing to do. People in
nursing homes may not get to experience the outside world as much as we do and they may be sad at times like Easter and Christmas. So even just a simple thing of us making them a card can bring a
smile to their face for days. So Easter is not only about chocolate and food – it is
about spending time with your family and cherishing every last minute with them. It is a time to think of others and sometimes
we forget that.” Sofie Rack (8 MMBON)
“Making the cards was a great thing to do so the elders could have hope, love and joy
for their Easter. In the cards we wrote short messages including ‘Peace be with you’ and
also did drawings to signify Easter.”Charly Doman (8 MMBON)
“The task we did today is important because we are being very thoughtful to others
around us. Making cards and surprising people in nursing homes would make them
happy and they would realise how much we care for them, and how much Jesus and
God does as well. I know grandparents love getting things like that from children like
us!” Matt Hardy (8 HMCAS)
“I think what we have done today is very important as there are some people in
nursing homes that don’t have their own family to talk to. Hopefully the cards we made will make these people happy that
someone has done this for them and makes them feel special.”
Liam Mayo (8 MMCIV)
“By writing these letters we are hopefully able to deliver a bit of love and happy
wishes to their day and the Easter holiday.” Charlotte Nenke (8 FMHAU)
“Today we made Easter cards to send to the Italian people that live in the retirement
village. I think this is important as some people aren’t able to go out and celebrate Easter with their family, so for us to make
and give them cards for Easter could potentially mean a lot to them.”
James Taylor (8 DMJEF)
“These cards will remind them that Jesus is always with them through thick and thin, no matter what. It is always nice to make something for someone and to know that you made them smile.”
> Riley Barradell (8 FMWIL)
YEAR 8 RETREAT > “Act Justly, Love Tenderly & Walk Humbly with Your God”The theme of this year’s Year 8 Retreat fell in line with ArchBishop Gleeson’s favourite quote of “Act Justly, Love Tenderly and Walk Humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8).
In 2017, our Year 8 Retreat was hosted by Mr Baker’s Year 11 RE Youth Ministry Class who worked hard preparing and planning engaging sessions for our Year 8s.
Students rotated through four different activities that explored different themes, including designing their own superhero for ‘Acting Justly’, discovering how to treat others in ‘Love Tenderly’, and trusting others and understanding humility for ‘Walk Humbly’. The fourth and final session saw the students look at what inspires them in their own lives.
It was fantastic to see our Year 11 students interact and guide the younger Year 8s through their first Retreat experience at Gleeson. The smiles on the Year 8s faces and enthusiastic engagement in each of the sessions was both uplifting and energising.
I would like to say a big congratulations to the Year 11 students involved for leading their first Retreat so positively and efficiently, and also commend the way all our students worked together and represented Gleeson at this fantastic College event.

YEAR 10 OUTDOOR ED > ‘Mt Holden Hill’ Officially Conquered! The Year 10 Outdoor Education Class conquered ‘Mt Holden Hill’ at Vertical Reality Indoor Rock Climbing Centre
recently!
After the initial safety briefing, where students were taught the skills of belaying
and clipping in, the girls were let loose on the climbing walls, each with varying
degrees of difficulty. I was very impressed by the students’ determination and support
of each other during what can be quite a terrifying challenge.
Last week the class also completed a practice walk at our local Cobbler Creek in preparation for our three-day bushwalking
camp to be held in Term 2. The students practiced some basic navigation skills
and experienced what it was like to carry a loaded pack. Besides the initial
embarrassment of walking on the footpaths during peak hour morning traffic, the
students embraced the challenge!
We now look forward to our camping experience early in Term 2! Well done girls!

2017 LIBRARY LOVER’S COMPETITION > Thomas LibraryThe beginning of term saw Thomas Library recognise Library Lover’s Month, which for obvious reasons falls in February - the idea being to promote a love of reading and fall in love with a book!
Thomas Library set up a display highlighting popular love stories and couples from novels across many genres, with ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Fault in our Stars’ and ‘Twilight’ to name a few. Our library lover’s competition proved very popular with staff and students. In 25 words or less, students were asked: ‘Why do you love your library?’ Our winning entry received a $25 Gift Voucher from QBD books. Responses were varied, well thought out and creative.
Congratulations to Year 12 student Georgia Craggs (12 DSHUT) on winning the competition with her very creative answer: “Because life is offering me a million doors and a library holds all the keys.”
Some fantastic short-listed responses by students across various year levels are below:
“The fact that it houses so many opportunities to learn and explore, as well as create new experience in books and writing.” Madison Sauerwald
“I love the library because it allows my mind to explore the world of the books.”Mia Fitzharris
“Books are an escape for anyone with an adventurous spirit who must stay put. Besides sometimes it nice to be somewhere else for a while.” Emily Unewisse
“Libraries are a place of community. They allow people to connect and discuss via the medium of books and allow everyone the opportunity to learn.” Kyle Sauerwald
“I love libraries because they can take me to many different places, even places that don’t exist. I can make connections with new people.” Caitlin Mikutta
“I love that you can go to a library to relax and read any book you like in peace. I also love the selection.” Deon Martino-Williams
Thank you to all students and staff who entered our Library Lover’s Competition in 2017!

New Gleeson College Shirt Fabric
As winter approaches, some families will be purchasing new winter College
shirts. The College selected a new fabric for the College shirts which is better quality, smarter and cheaper
than the old style. The pocket was also removed so that the style of shirt is
more contemporary.
This new shirt fabric will also be used for the summer shirts.

YEAR 12 CHILD STUDIES > Computer Game to Life!Year 12 Child Studies students recently implemented their first group activity, having the wonderful opportunity to visit and interact with students in a Year 2/3 Class at Salisbury North Primary School.
This project allowed students to differentiate the activities planned and get a feel for what it is like to engage with younger students in a real life primary school setting.
Many of the Child Studies students are looking at a career in education and this project proved very valuable, allowing them to differentiate the activities planned and get a real feel for what it is like to engage with much younger students in a real-life primary school setting. Each of our Gleeson groups received many compliments from the Salisbury North PS Staff and Education Support Officers (ESOs). They were all highly impressed with the engagement, organisation and creativity of our students.
Each assessment task in Stage 2 Child Studies focuses on a contemporary issue relevant to children in Australian society today. Our current focus in on the impact of computer technologies and how over-engagement in the sedentary activities can impact a child’s health, wellbeing and development.
The assessment task briefs the students to adapt a popular computer game or app into a physical activity, with a focus on supporting students fine and gross motor skills. Some groups chose to extend their activity focus by also focusing on another developmental area relevant to the children’s age bracket (e.g. cognitive development). Adapted games included; ‘Subway Surfers’ and ‘Jetpack Joy Ride’ - timed obstacle courses, ‘Pokemon Go’ - a treasure hunt, ‘Just Dance’ - a dance routine and, ‘Tetris’ - a solo competition that supported student’s development of geometric reasoning (a topic the primary school students had recently learned about!). Each of the planned activities engaged a group of 8-10 primary school students for approximately 10-15 minutes, before rotating. There were four rotations in total and the primary school students did not want the activities to end!
The learning aids made for these activities were donated to the primary school at the end of the session and Diana and Vikki (Salisbury North PS Teachers) were very excited to accept them, and were looking forward to engaging their class in the activities again very soon!
We would like to thank Salisbury North Primary School for their continued support in providing our Stage 1 and 2 Chid Studies Classes with opportunities to work with their amazing students.

CATHOLIC CO ED ATHLETICS 2017 > Gleeson Represents with Pride!Gleeson College took a contingent of 67 students from across all year levels to compete at the annual Catholic Co Ed Athletics Carnival held at Santos recently.
Conditions seemed perfect until we encountered some scattered rain, however this did not stop proceedings, and the day continued with our enthusiastic Gleeson athletes hitting the track and field to proudly represent the College. We encountered tough competition against Thomas More, Nazareth, Mt Carmel, St Columba, St Francis De Sales and St Michael’s Colleges on the day, but Gleeson showed that a small-school mentality does not prevent us from being highly competitive overall, finishing an amazing 2nd in the Under 15 age group, 5th in Under 14 and 6th in the Under 16 and Open age groups.
Thank you to Ms Candice Mitchell and GC Old Scholars Erica Greet, Madison Glover, Kimberley Elliott and Sarah Pope, who all ensured our athletes were at their events on time, and also assisted with timekeeping and marshalling on the day. We truly appreciate the giving of your time to our Gleeson community.
Congratulations to all students involved in competing or assisting on the day, and a special thank you to all those students that competed in an age group above their own to ensure that Gleeson was represented in as many events as possible, adding valuable points to our final tally. Well done!
