Last Friday we held our annual Gleeson Athletics
Carnival and it was a case of Hughes House
domination with the Red team showcasing their
talent across all events to take out the coveted 2017 Shield.
As in previous years, it was a tight contest overall, however as the day progressed,
a distinct battle between reigning champions Fyfe House and bridesmaids Hughes became evident. It was fantastic
to see a range of competitors across all events, where House spirit was on
display as students jumped in to fill gaps and support their team. Not only was
competition fierce in each of the official track and field events, but also in the
novelty events and costume stakes, with ...Continued on page 4
OUR UNIQUE COMMUNITY CONTINUES TO AMAZE!
Our annual Athletics Day was a huge success! With record attendance and terrific participation, it was a magnificent day. Mention must be made of the great effort Year 12 students (staff and parents!) made to dress in their House colours; from the Hulk, Superman and Spiderman, to sauce and mustard bottles, dinosaurs and m&ms!! Very creative! Special thanks of course to Miss Rachel Staffin, the HPE Faculty, and the House Coordinators for their leadership; thank you too to the P&F for giving up their time to run the Sausage Sizzle. Congratulations to the Hughes House who were overall winners, and to Damiani for winning the House Points for House Spirit!
The Parents & Friends Committee are involved in many activities and projects as always, and we welcome several new members to our group: Deb Hobbs, Kim Howard, Melissa Bonney and Anne-Marie Stewart. The committee is planning a number of events this year, including our annual and always popular Quiz Night! Look out for details in upcoming issues of The Globe. The P&F also supports many student-led initiatives, such as new Recycling Bins with a twist! The generosity and support of the P&F are very much appreciated.
Mr Andrew Baker and I met with the Student Leadership Executive (Britney Shorter, Georgia Craggs, Tim Camilleri and Lachlan Agius), and their polished and professional approach is most impressive. Some of the 2017 planning includes the construction of a community garden which will involve the Food and Hospitality and Technology (Construction) learning areas. This is most exciting, especially as plans are underway to apply for a grant through the local council. Thanks to Ms Joanna Bennett for her expertise and support here. Our Student Leaders really are exceptional.
Monsignor Swann celebrated a Staff Mass for us and we acknowledge again his highly valued connection to our Gleeson College family. We are very blessed to be able to have such special celebrations together.
Staff continue to be involved in various professional learning initiatives, one of which is the Languages Network Project run through the Catholic Education Office, the purpose of which is to work together to promote and refine our languages program and align it with Primary School programs. Mrs Kirsty Jeffree (Languages Learning Area Coordinator) and I are delighted that we are working in partnership with St Francis Xavier’s School and Saint David’s Parish School, and thank Mrs Leanne Lawler (Principal, Saint David’s) and Mrs Leonie DeGaris (Principal, SFX) for their schools’ participation.
Finally, a thank you to the ambassadors of Gleeson College who compete in Saturday Morning Sport. I was pleased to be able to visit both the Badminton and Tennis teams, and the skill, camaraderie and great sportsmanship are inspiring. Thanks to Mr Jordan Glover (Badminton Team Coach) and Ms Alesia Sala (Tennis Team Coach) and of course to the other Coaches, Old Scholars and parents who make it all possible.
I continue to be amazed at the depth of this unique community and share a deep pride in everything about it. We look forward to sharing our community with Year 7s as we prepare to welcome them next year. Please be reminded that May 1st is the final date to lodge an ‘Application for Enrolment’ for Year 7 in 2018.
Wishing all of our community a blessed week ahead as we journey towards the Holy season of Easter.

Year 11 Food & Hospitality Students Showcase Amazing Food-Plating Skills! The Year 11 Food and Hospitality Class
completed their summative assessment task, based on food presentation and
menu trends, last week.
Students were required to select and prepare a gluten free recipe (menu
trend) that showed either a rustic, sleek or a very contemporary, deconstructed plating trend. The recipe also needed
to showcase 2-3 key cooking skills considered challenging enough for a Year 11 standard dish. The class went above and beyond expectation, plating
up an array of amazing sweet and savoury dishes that truly looked like they
had come straight from the kitchen of an exclusive Adelaide restaurant! The flavour combinations presented were also divine and the use of texture was
excellent!
Congratulations Year 11 Food and Hospitality on an outstanding cooking
practical!
Mrs Sarah McLoughlin,Year 11 Food & Hospitality Teacher

Senior students modelling their own unique House-inspired outfits! Well done to all Houses and their student members for having the highest attendance ever at an Athletics Carnival, and for driving such fantastic House spirit and support for all
students who participated.
The success of the day relies on students and staff and I would like to thank everyone for their participation and help in the lead up to, and on the
day. Congratulations to all House Captains for their tireless work in
organising and encouraging their team. Our House Captains were the first to nominate themselves to fill spots in
events, ensuring every point possible for their team’s tally, and must be
commended for their enthusiasm, spirit and leadership displayed. To Damiani House, congratulations on having the
least number of absentees on the day and for winning the House Points - a great
achievement!
Thank you to all staff for their support in facilitating the carnival, with special mention to our Property Management

Young people’s digital technology needs to be managed and monitored by parents. That means we need to have some rules and guidelines in place.
Only a few short years ago the biggest question making the rounds of parents about tweens and teens was if their young person should have a mobile device. Now it’s a matter of when, not if they get a mobile phone. Increasingly, young people are beginning secondary school as experienced digital users with many coming to secondary school on the first day with a tablet in their schoolbag and a mobile phone in their pocket.
One thing is certain, technology is an issue you’ll struggle with for the rest of your parenting life. We’ve created the technology and unleashed it on our kids and now we seem to be scrambling like mad to keep up.
Adding to this complexity is that fact that technology keeps changing rapidly. We just come to grips with one device or app when a new one comes along that we have to learn about.
Technology is here to stay. It’s no point being doom and gloom as digital technology has so many advantages. For instance, most parents report that they feel safer when teenagers have their own mobile phones because of the GPS features, that allow them to know the whereabouts of their young people. Teenagers also report that their mobile provides an important communication safety net for them as the driver for greater independence takes them further from home.
You’d have to be living under a rock not to realise that digital technology also presents new challenges such as cyber-bullying, gaming, worries about
parentingideas.com.au now we know.
What rules should you have around digital devices? By Michael Grose
TECHNOLOGY AND PARENTING
social media, and young people’s exposure to inappropriate images. On top of this digital technology gives young people access to a virtual world that is totally seductive particularly for those with poor impulse control. Also the nature of technology means that young people can spend a lot of their time heads bent and staring into a screen, which is not healthy in the long term.
Young people’s digital technology use needs to be managed and monitored by parents. That means having some rules and guidelines in place. Every family makes up their own rules to suit their circumstances but here are some suggestions that will help you put some order into the digital devices that come into your home.
1. Know what the rules and expectations are at school This a great starting point for families. Every school is different – some allow mobile phones to be kept in student lockers or backpacks, while others allow limited mobile phone usage in-between classes or even during class time to aid with assignments. Make sure that you and your child know what the rules are at school. Importantly, support the school and align your expectations with those of the school.
