YEAR 10 BUSHWALKING CAMP @ DEEP CREEK CONSERVATION PARK

Issue 13 / Friday 20 May 2016

The Globe Newsletter of Gleeson College

The Year 10 Outdoor Education Class embarked on a two-dayBushwalking Camp at Deep Creek Conservation Park last week.

We spent our days hiking through the beautiful terrain the coastline had to offer. We were blessed with beautiful hiking weather, great views of the

ocean and witnessed the wildlife in their natural habitat.

The first day saw the group hike down the steep terrain to Deep Creek Cove followed by a steep hike into Trig Campground to set up camp for the night. In the evening the group cooked some great meals on their trangias, whilst

star-gazing by the campfire. The second day saw the group hike to Deep Creek Waterfall where we were able to have a relaxing lunch followed by a steep and long walk back out to Tapanappa Lookout to the bus. By the end of the

trip everyone had gained a lot of confidence in the wilderness and had vastly improved their technical skills. Students not only developed their hiking and

camp skills, but also learnt a lot about working as a team, demonstrating leadership in diverse situations, and being out of their comfort zones.

I am very proud of the class as they showed great determination, team work and organisation throughout the camp! I would like to thank Mr Daniel Ryall

for accompanying us and sharing in the great memories!

AN AUTHENTIC CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Catholic Education WeekFriday May 13 to Friday May 20 we celebrate Catholic Education Week. You may have noticed the signage at the entrance to the College with the slogan “Every Child Matters”, as well as the lift-out in the Advertiser two Saturdays ago with information on every Catholic school in South Australia.

It is indeed a privilege to lead a Catholic school community and to have worked in this system for 25 years. Catholic Education Week has called me to reflect on what it means to for Gleeson College to be an authentic Catholic school.

An authentic Catholic school teaches young people to question and critique their world using the example of Christ as our guide. We address the questions of importance and equip the young people who attend our school to understand the importance of their impact in the world.

An authentic Catholic school is a place where all are welcomed and included. We strive at Gleeson College to ensure that all of the young people and their families that are here understand and believe that they are a part of a community that cares for them in a meaningful way.

An authentic Catholic school strives to find new ways of engaging young people in the message of the Church, a message that at present is being led inspirationally by Pope Francis. His recent encyclicals Luadato si’ regarding the environment and human ecology; and Amoris Laetita

that speaks on love in the family are filled with hope and positive messages. These messages in turn provide direction for our Catholic communities.

At Gleeson College we have celebrated Catholic Education Week in a number of ways. On Monday as a staff, we came together in prayer to recommit ourselves to our vocation and to launch the newly released Charter for Catholic School Staff, and on Wednesday we held a College Mass to celebrate in the way that Jesus asked of us by sharing the Eucharist. The reverence and positivity of both of these events once again heartened me and demonstrated those things that are wonderful about belonging to an authentic Catholic community.

Enrolment InterviewsLast Saturday the Leadership Team and House Coordinators conducted enrolment interviews for Year 8 siblings for 2017 and non-siblings for 2018 enrolment. I find these enrolment interviews an absolute privilege and one of the best parts of my work. To hear so many families speak so highly of the reputation of our College, and the students and families that are in it, is truly humbling as Principal. Also the opportunity to meet some fine young people who will be future students at Gleeson, and who are able to speak confidently about their place in the world gives me great hope. It also serves as a timely reminder to any families that have not yet enrolled to ensure that they do so as soon as possible to aid our planning.

Catholic Education Week Prayer

Loving God,as we encounter Your image in every

child no matter what age,we ask for wisdom and Your grace to...

• See the wonder and awe of the world through the eyes of children;

• Acknowledge and celebrate their agency;

• Listen to their voices with respect and understanding;

• Celebrate with them as they live who they are called to be;

• Invite and nurture their full participation in life and community;

• Value their relationships and heritage;

• Commit ourselves to their right to dream, to seek meaning, to love and to grow in knowing that they are Your children loved by You.

We ask this prayer through Jesus,the Child, the Adult, the Christ,

Who lives with You and the Holy Spirit.Together We Pray - With One Heart.

Amen

PRIDE IN THE COLLEGE UNIFORM & OUR PERSONAL APPEARANCE

Students are expected to wear the correct Gleeson College Uniform, and to do so in a manner that signifies pride in both the College and their own personal appearance. The correct Winter Uniform is to be worn on all occasions when attending the College on days the students do not have Physical Education.

The areas of concern which have been noted in the first few weeks include:• The College Blazer is to be the outer

garment worn to and from school.• Top buttons of long sleeve

monogrammed shirts are required to be fastened and ties to be tied to

the button.• Shirts are to remain tucked into the

pants or winter skirt.• Skirts are required to be at or below

knee length. Long Grey socks or opaque mid grey (not sheer) stockings are to be worn.

• Only charcoal, grey or black belts with a plain buckle are permitted.

• The College scarf may also be worn outside of the classroom.

• The College PE tracksuit is to worn as the outer garments on PE days to and from school.

• A further reminder, any hair that has the potential to fall across the face or falls lower than the collar is required to be restrained at all times.

At Gleeson College we strongly emphasise the appropriate wearing of all aspects of the uniform and that this responsibility will always belong to the student. However, we regard your support and encouragement as invaluable in helping your child follow the expectations of our Uniform Policy at Gleeson College.

Greater detail relating to the College Uniform is provided on pages 16 & 17 of the Student diary.

YEAR 10 BUSHWALKING CAMP @ DEEP CREEK CONSERVATION PARK

Pop Art was an artistic and cultural movement in America and Britain in the late 1950’s and 60’s. Pop Art sees common place objects and images such as cars, soup cans, electrical appliances, cartoon strips, used as subject matter for artistic composition. At the end of last term, the Year 10 Visual Art students completed an assessment

task based on Pop Artist Claus Oldenburg’s witty sculptural approach, which takes consumable products and enlarges them in contradictory materials. Here are some fantastic examples of the Year 10 Visual Art students final Pop Art

pieces - the results are wonderful and show the creativity and talent our students possess!

FYFE SENIOR STUDENTS GET MECHANICAL @ RAA LIFE SKILLS SESSIONYEAR 9/10 SPECIALIST NETBALL: Thunderbird Erin Shares Her Elite Skill-Set

As part of the Life Skills Unit within the Personal Development Program, Fyfe Senior Care Group FSIMB was

fortunate enough to have Jason and John from the RAA Education Sector deliver a Vehicle & Car Maintenance

presentation last week.

Throughout this session, students gained valuable information and

hands-on experience in a variety of aspects of car maintenance. Students

were provided information on general car maintenance through a

presentation, followed be a practical session. Students identified items under the bonnet of the vehicles,

checked fluid levels and determined if levels were safe. Students learnt

how to check the tread depth of the tyres to check for baldness and also the tyre pressure, which included learning what pressure is safe for

certain vehicles. The group also got hands-on, learning the correct way to

safely change a tyre.

Throughout this term, all Fyfe Senior Care Groups will take part

in this presentation within the Life Skills Unit. We thank Andrew Clark

from the RAA for assisting in the organisation of these presentations and look forward to having his team

working with our Care Groups for the remainder of Term 2.

Ms Josephine Imbrogno,FSIMB Care Group Teacher

Our Year 9/10 Specialist Netballers enjoyed a fantastic skills session with star Adelaide Thunderbird

Erin Bell during lesson on Tuesday.

The girls were put through their paces and learned much about

on-court positioning and awareness which will assist their game play.

TOP START FOR FIRST XI TWILIGHT BOYS & OPEN INDOOR KO GIRLS!

GLEESON EDGE ST MICHAEL’S IN 5-GOAL TWILIGHT SEASON OPENEROur Gleeson College Open Boys Soccer Team took on St Michael’s College in the opening round of the First XI Twilight Soccer League (TSL) last week.

The game did not disappoint with Gleeson edging St Michael’s 3-2 in a fast tempo, high quality match. We took the lead early in the first half when Jack Ward (12 MSRYA) produced a sharp first time finish into the bottom corner of the net from a drilled in cross by Kyle Crout (11 FSMIL). St Michael’s pegged the lead back only for Gleeson to quickly take the lead again through a thundering strike from all of 30 yards by Daniel Ditroia (12 DSHEW)! Gleeson then rounded out the first half with a third, courtesy of Connor McLaughlin (11 DSVAU), who was able to latch on to a through ball from Declan Sutherland (11 FSEMA) and round the St Michael’s goal keeper before finishing into an empty net. This gave us a 3-1 lead at half time. St Michael’s managed to pull another goal back in the last half, but it was too little too late as the Gleeson boys held the lead for a solid 3-2 win to open the season.

Gleeson Coach Travis Dodd was understandably pleased with the first result; “It was a fantastic effort by the squad against a school known for producing quality teams”. Asked about the upcoming season, Travis declared he is “looking forward to building on the early season result and being in the running for the Twilight Title at the end of the season”.

OPEN GIRLS INDOOR SOCCER PROGRESS TO 2016 STATE FINALSThe Open Girls Indoor Soccer Team have again progressed through to the State Finals in 2016 following a comprehensive qualifying performance at MARS Indoor Centre last week.

From the opening whistle of the first game it was clear that the Gleeson girls were going to have the measure of the competition, and so it proved to be with the side wining all four games to qualify for the State Finals. Resounding wins included a 6-1 win against OLSH, a 7-1 victory over Salisbury East and a thumping 8-1 victory against traditional rivals Mary MacKillop College. The girls were restricted to a 1-0 victory in their final qualifying game but the team had already done enough to book their spot in the finals, which will occur later in Term 2. All team members played well on the day with Kirsten Pett (10 HSMAN), Mia Fitzharris (10 DSVAU) and Dani O’Donnell (9 MMMOR) amongst the goals, scoring 16 goals between them across the four games.

Mr Clint Vause, Open Girls Indoor Soccer Coach

GLEESON CAST ASIDE PAC 4-0 TO TOP TWILIGHT TABLEThe Gleeson College Open Boys Team took on Prince Alfred College in the second round of the First XI Twilight Soccer League on Wednesday afternoon.

We faced some challenging pitch conditions and a PAC side determined to get a result, but the GC boys did not have to wait long before opening the scoring. Kyle Crout (11 FSMIL) was able to capitalise on a loose ball in the box to calmly volley over the goal keeper and into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area. Gleeson were

able to add a second just before the break through a sharp low finish from close range by Alex McCarron (12 DSSAL) from a ball played across the box. The second half continued in similar fashion to the first and the team didn’t have to wait long before Connor McLaughlin (11 DSVAU) was brought down in the box after a penetrating solo run. McLaughlin duly converted the penalty kick to make it 3-0. Gleeson now in total control and streaming forward at will were able to put the icing on the cake 10 minutes from time when Jack Ward (12 MSRYA) was able to latch on to a bouncing ball to lob the keeper from all of 25 yards, the ball perfectly placed into the top left hand corner of the net!

Coach Travis Dodd was delighted with the 4-0 win in our second showing, in particular the depth of the squad; “It was great for us to make it two wins from our two opening games. I was impressed with the young boys who came into the squad and did an outstanding job.” Several new faces were given the opportunity to debut for the College in Twilight Soccer with our Open Boys Team set to take on St George’s in Round 1 of the SSSSA Open Boys Knockout Competition at home the following day! Young players, Isaac Mullen (10 FSMAR), Cooper Nunn (9 MMMAH), Ryan Mayo (9 MMMOR) and Rob Shyti (9 DMMCC) were all impressive, showing maturity beyond their years.

The team has a bye next week (Round 3), but will return the following week to take on CBC (June 1).

Standing up for Our Children’s Education In the lead up to this year’s Federal election on 2 July, the Federation of Catholic School Parent Communities is working closely with the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools for education policies that will ensure a Catholic education is affordable and accessible to all. Our national body, Catholic School Parents Australia, is also collaborating with the National Catholic Education Commission on behalf of Catholic school families across Australia. We are calling for a federal education policy that will deliver the funding required to keep our schools strong and:

Allow them to continue to keep working with their communities to provide an excellent education that meets the needs of all children and educates the whole child;

Keep fees affordable so that parents can exercise their right to choose a Catholic education for their children.

We know this is important to you.

Our children’s education is worth standing up for.

What you can expect from your Federation over the next few months:

Fact sheets about how Catholic schools are funded in South Australia and what they provide (or visit www.schoolfundingfacts.com);

Information about the education policies of the major parties and what they will mean for you and your child’s school;

Ideas for how you can work with us to make sure that all main candidates who want to be elected to the federal parliament know what we expect.
