Carpenter Anniversary Celebration Planned A reception honoring Carol
and Veryl Carpenter’s ap-
proaching 60th wedding an-
niversary will be Sunday, July
31, from 2- 5 p.m. at the An-
gola Elks Lodge, State Road
127 (or North Wayne Street)
in Angola.
Carol and Veryl were married on
November 24, 1956 in Hudson,
Indiana.
Their three children, Mark (Julie)
Carpenter; Cheri (Greg) Stroh
and Terri Carpenter, scheduled
the party for this summer so
that those friends and family who
are snowbirds can be included in
the celebration!
Please join the family as they
honor Carol and Veryl!
The Hebrew Bible scholar Walter
Brueggemann has published a book, Pray-
ers for a Privileged People. It is poetry that
I have been reading over the past few
weeks.
A part of one of those prayers in includ-
ed in From the Prayer Chain in this news-
letter and a part of another will be on
our bulletin cover on Sunday.
They are wonderful prayers ... written
from the perspective of a man who
knows he is privileged due to his gender,
his race, his sexual orientation, his eco-
nomic status and his level of education.
In this life you could say, Walter
Brueggemann has it all. And yet he knows
that is not quite true ... he knows none
of that will replace - or stand in for - his
need for God.
As he writes in one of his prayers:
“Good, hard, demanding, generous
God: we do not ask to be dazzled; we
do not ask to be made smooth in suc-
cess. We ask rather for courage to be
faithful, to submit our privilege and enti-
tlement to you, before it is too late.”
All of us who read this newsletter are
privileged compared to much of the
world whether it feels that way or not.
And so Brueggemann’s prayers may
speak to us in way many prayers do
not.
As we read - and hear - these prayers
may they speak truth to our context
and help us to open our hearts more
fully because we more fully understand
ourselves.
Blessings,
“It is God’s
holiness that
subverts our
best convic-
tions ...”

Do your mysterious, majestic God-ing with our hearts:
reclaim, renew, re-enliven, that we may leave your presence
transplanted, transformed, transposed,
become by your attentiveness whom we have not yet embraced,
open and receptive,
honest and defensive,
unafraid and committed to obedience. - Walter Brueggemann, Prayers for a Privileged People
