Food for Thought

mid-winter

snow swirls, snow swirls,

a frenzied backdrop deceptive beauty,

before which a cat hiding the waiting

sits, ice

expectant serenity the unwelcome gift

peering in through of persistent cold--

the window, childhood wonder

contemplated yields to

by children caution painfully learned

(unusually still). in aging.

Commentary

Disciples know both the joy and the pain of reality.

These are not sequential; they are locked in inseparable

co-existence. We are able always to discover one in the

other. Crucifixion brings us freedom through suffering;

resurrection calls us to serious and accountable living.

The cynic may deny joy; the idealist may deny pain. As

Christians following Jesus Christ, we are committed to

living in a spiritual dimension in a world that does not

always acknowledge and respect that dimension.

But the Christian also knows that ultimately joy

will prevail, that the crucifixion is seen through the

window of the resurrection. The co-existence shall be

broken. Winter will yield to Easter, even though our

lives here must be lived in both.

Love in mid-winter,

Pastor Bill

SIS Meeting

SIS will be having their regular meeting on Sunday,

February 16 following the worship service. The theme

will be fondue. All women are welcome. Any questions,

please contact Hanora Sullivan.

Worship

The Worship Ministry is extremely happy to welcome Hal Jones to our Chancel Choir

family. He sang with us for the first time on January 26th, and is a talented addition to

our group. We are so delighted you decided to share your gifts by joining us.

February 2nd is Scout Sunday (along with Groundhog Day). We hope all Scouts – Girls,

Boys and Leaders – will join us in Worship to be recognized and celebrated.

Also on February 2nd, at the end of the service, our two newest handbell ringers, Mo Moss

and Dolores Taylor, will accompany the choir with a choral benediction.

On February 9th Communion will be served in the pews. We have moved the date from

February 2nd as it was originally scheduled.

Bill Hooper, our guest organist/pianist/singer, will be with us on February 2, 9 and 23.

Nancy Popoloski will be our pianist on February 16, which is Presidents’ Weekend. Nancy

has been doing an outstanding job as Choir Director. Thank you, Nancy and Bill for your

many talents.

Mark your calendars: Ash Wednesday comes later this year and will be on March 5th.

We will have our traditional Soup & Bread Supper at 6:00 p.m. and worship service at

7:30 p.m. As time gets closer, a sign-up sheet will be posted for Soup and Bread makers

and helpers.

We look forward to seeing you in church on Sunday mornings. You are our church family,

and we love you all.

Important News: Pastoral Emergency Care

We have pastoral emergency coverage for our congregation. If you know of a need for emergency care

please contact Pastor Bill Doster at [email protected] or call him at 201-501-8951.

We have a church officer checking the answering machine at the office three times a day when

Cynthia is not working and in the evening on the days she is working.

Any questions please email Lois Dunikowski at [email protected]

The Commissioning of

Tanya Bray

Hal Jones

Nina Pasquarelli (Mission Trip to India)

As Pastor Bill said to the congregation - “Take time each day

during the mission trip to pray for Tanya, Hal, and Nina.

Pray for strength, peace, patience, and kindness. Above all,

pray that God will use them to show God’s love.”

The

deadline for the monthly

newsletter is the 20th of each

month. Please submit the

news you want to share, to

Cynthia on or before the 20th

of each month at

[email protected].

• to all the volunteers

helping to serve those in

need for the week FPCW

hosted the Family

Promise program.

• to Chris Pasquarelli

for replacing doorbell

that was broken. • to the following singers and ringers

from FPC who visited Valley View on

January 12th to present our rescheduled

Christmas program: Pastor Bill and Betty

Doster, Lois Dunikowski, Deborah

Chedister, Hal Jones, Kieran Bray-Jones,

Flo Radcliffe, Bobbie Trager and Nancy

Popoloski. From the Boy/Cub Cub Scouts

and Venture Crew were: Mary, Catherine,

Tommy and Danny Tighe and their parents

Brian and Christine. A "last blast" of the

holidays was enjoyed by all!

Hearts as Wide as the World

The awareness of being part of the

communion of saints makes our hearts as wide

as the world. The love with which we love is

not just our love; it is the love of Jesus and his

saints living in us. When the Spirit of Jesus

lives in our hearts, all who have lived their

lives in that Spirit live there too. Our parents,

grandparents, and great-grandparents; our

teachers and their teachers; our pastors and

their pastors; our spiritual guides and theirs–all

the holy men and women who form that long

line of love through history–are part of our

hearts, where the Spirit of Jesus chooses to

dwell.

The communion of saints is not just a

network of connections between people. It is

first and foremost the community of our

hearts.

prayer requests.

Emergency Use of the Church Building - If any person in our church family is without power,

water, or heat, and needs to use the church as a safe haven, please contact your deacon

shepherd so he or she can direct your need to the appropriate ministry elder(s).

The Deacons are very happy to serve the members of this congregation. Please let your

deacon shepherd know if he or she can help you in any way. (There is a list posted on the

bulletin board in the Denniston Room if you are not sure who your deacon shepherd is.)

The Savvy Sisters of Syntax

The Savvy Soul Sisters of Syntax book club held

their meeting at Valley View on January 17th.

Long-time member, Helen Robinson, was then in

residence there working hard on rehabilitation

following surgery to repair her injury from a fall at

home in December. We discussed Helen's book

selection "Bread Givers" by Anzia Yezierska. We

also shared good food, fellowship and fun. Helen's

roommate, Dolores, became an honorary member

of our group as she easily joined in and contributed

her worldly insights to our discussion. A memorable

evening was enjoyed by all.

Our next book selection "The Sweetness of Forgetting" by Kristin Harmel was suggested by

Melissa Adams. She will host our next meeting on February 28th. If you would like to read

this book and join us for discussion, we would love to have you. Please call Melissa for

directions (845) 614-5100.

Call Cynthia at 496-3814 or send an e-mail to [email protected]

to share your news with our church family!
