ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Welcome to our program of holiday carols from around the world. This program offers a dual purpose of providing musical enrichment and serenity for the listeners, while allowing our ensemble to put into practice the fundamentals of fine choral singing. As we are first and foremost about music education, our pieces represent a variety of historical and musical style periods, as well as a variety of performance challenges. The vocal parts range from basic unison and canonic passages to difficult eight-part harmony with sustained phrases; from consonant and simple hymn-like harmony to jazz chords and contemporary dissonance. Throughout the rehearsal process, we diligently work to master many technical concepts like breath support, listening, blend and balance, tone quality, intonation, dynamics, enunciation and precision. We are then challenged to strive beyond the technical aspects toward higher levels of expressive music making. It is our hope that the selections you hear today will offer you a brief escape to the more joyful and peaceful aspects of the holiday season.

THE GRANDVIEW SINGERSThe Grandview Singers is a select chamber choir which studies and performs several styles of music throughout the school year including art music from all style periods, madrigal music, vocal jazz and popular music. The students are selected both by auditioning and by demonstrating the ability to maintain the highest standards of musical excellence through choral rehearsal and performance. Emphasis is placed on a greater mastery of performance and vocal production skills within the repertoire of progressively challenging music. They perform up to seven concerts within a school year as well as a variety of “run-out” performances for the community during the December holiday season. The Grandview Singers have consistently earned superior ratings at the OMEA State Adjudicated Events for the last fifteen years. They recently performed at the Ohio Choral Director’s Association Summer Conference in June 2019, and will travel to New York City in April of 2020 to perform and tour.

GRANDVIEW HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMING ARTS PHILOSOPHY
Music and the Arts are basic to the quality and richness of life, and to our human existence itself. They are, therefore, an essential component of every child’s education. A planned music instructional program is to be presented to children as an integral discipline, worthy of study, and through which all three learning domains (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective) are utilized. A quality music education should provide opportunities to perform, improvise, compose, and arrange music in all mediums - including the use of technology. These music experiences are an effective vehicle for transmitting self-confidence, self-discipline, cooperative learning, social interaction, and cultural awareness, and will foster continual musical development in all students. Specifically, our department is committed to actualizing the following beliefs and practices for all students:
• Developing and enhancing music appreciation, musicianship and artistry through a variety of music literature.
• Discovering and exploring the fundamentals, technique, and skills of performance.
• Reading and interpreting music accurately, fluently, and for meaning.
• Emphasizing professional etiquette of the individual within rehearsal, performance, and audience environments.
• Providing high quality performance opportunities that are meaningful and relevant to the students—as well as the traditions of the community.
CHORAL ACTIVITIES INSTRUCTIONAL MISSION Students who have been involved in a curricular ensemble of GHHS Choral Activities should be able to make a smooth transition into a college choir, community choir or other adult choir with the experience necessary to be a competent and educated member. They should be able to take part in and/or listen to choral performances with knowledge, appreciation for and enjoyment of the art form.
