INSTRUCTIONAL LEADER BANGOR PUBLIC SCHOOL

I am very excited to now have the Instructional Leader role at Bangor Public School.

What this means is that I don’t have my own class and I am able to work with teachers to identify areas for

improvement in student learning. This data will assist us to develop quality teaching practices along with

tailored learning programs to meet the identified areas. Writing from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be an

ongoing focus for Bangor.

Teachers are currently collecting detailed information on what your child can do well and where they require

development. In teams, we will work on how we can improve our practices and learning experiences in the

classroom to address these needs.

I look forward to working with my dedicated colleagues and hardworking students throughout the year and

will give you updates on our progress.

MEDICAL INFORMATION

Medical Information Form

All students will require a completed form for 2018. Students in Years 3-6 received a medical form with the

swimming carnival permission notes and information and this should have been completed and returned. A form

has been provided in this week’s Grapevine for students in Kindergarten-Year 2 to complete. The information

included on the form allows staff to appropriately support students and minimise risks when conducting school

excursions, sporting and other school activities.

All 2018 Medical Information Forms are due back at school by Friday 23 February 2018. Please return to the

front office via the school money collection box (gold slot) on the outside of the administration building.

NOTIFICATION OF CONTAGIOUS AND TRANSMITTABLE DISEASES

To protect the health and well being of students with some very serious health conditions it is imperative that

the school be notified through the school office if your child has been diagnosed with a contagious or

transmittable disease eg measles, German measles, chicken pox, whooping cough etc. This enables us to

contact the families concerned and alert them to any risks that can then be minimised. We greatly appreciate

your support with following this procedure.

Library and Information Skills lessons have commenced. Student borrowing will commence this week (Week 2)

for all students in Years 1-6 and in Week 3 for Kindergarten students.

We are continuing our very successful information skills program again this year for students in Years 3 – 6.

Library and information skills lessons will be delivered by me as part of the RFF program and will be one hour in

duration. Library skills will be taught in conjunction with information skills. Information literacy, the skill of

finding and using information resources, is the basis of the library’s role in the school’s teaching and learning

program. Lessons will be related to work being covered in classrooms (eg History, Geography units, Literacy

work, etc.). During their lessons the students will also do their borrowing, renewing books etc. Kindergarten,

Year 1 and Year 2 library lessons remain at 30 minutes in duration. Lesson days will be as follows:

Library Bags:

We would like every student to bring a library bag to borrow books. The bags help to preserve our books which

are costly to replace. Bangor School library bags can be purchased from the School Uniform Shop. Your child

does not need to have a school library bag. Any cloth bag, plastic zip-lock bag or even a plastic bag would

suffice. However, students must have a library bag, clearly marked with their name, to be able to borrow.

Student Borrowing:

Student loans are for one week only. Students must return their books on their library day (or before if

they wish). They are more than welcome to renew books for a further week but they must bring their book/s to

their library lesson for renewal.

Student Borrowing Limits:

Students may borrow the following number of books at a time (at the teacher/librarian’s discretion):

Kindergarten and Year 1 - 1 book Year 4 - 4 books

Year 2 - 2 books Year 5 - 5 books

Year 3 - 3 books Year 6 - 6 books

Lunchtime Borrowing:

Students may borrow and return books if they wish, at lunchtimes on their allocated day/s. This year the

Library will be open first and second half lunch time every day (unless students are notified otherwise).

Monday - Year 2, 3 & 4 Wednesday - Kinder & Year 1, Years 5-6 Friday - Years 2-6

Tuesday - Year 2, 3 & 4 Thursday - Kinder & Year 1, Years 5-6

LIBRARY INFORMATION (CONTINUED)

Browsing Cards

All students in Years 1– 6 use their browsing card in every lesson and whenever they are searching for books in

the library. The browsing card assists students to return books to the correct location on the shelves as they

are looking for information or browsing to borrow.

Year 1 students will be issued with a card in the next few weeks. Students in Years 2–6 who have already made

a card will continue to use it this year. Any new students in Years 2–6 will need a browsing card. If your child

is issued with a new browsing card this year they will be bringing it home to be covered in clear contact. They

may decorate it as they wish before covering it. This will help preserve the cards for the entire year. If

possible could you please cover the card and return it to school before the library lesson the following week.

Your support in this would be greatly appreciated.

Parent Helpers

I am seeking volunteers who would be prepared to either help in the Library with returning and shelving books

for half an hour or cover books at home (contact is provided). If you can help please complete the tear-off

and return it to me by Friday 16 February 2018 (Week 3). I will organise a roster and contact you in the

following week.

If you require any further information regarding anything about the Library, please contact me through the

School Office. Debbie Smok

Eco Club 2018

The Eco Club has enjoyed two fantastic years at Bangor Public School and we are back for 2018. Last

year we had over 150 members and this year we are looking for even more.

The Eco Club’s job this year is to continue to beautify the school environment and to complete several

projects that we began last year. We also endeavour to educate the students about the importance of

the environment around them and how they need to play an active role in maintaining and managing this

resource.

The bottle top artwork project was completed at the end of last year and is currently hanging in Mr

Walsh’s new classroom. Please feel free to walk past and check it out.

We have several ideas for fundraising this year. We are asking if you have any decorative pots that you

are getting rid of, could you please bring them to school. Our gumboot gardens are also in need of

rejuvenation; therefore, we would like donations of any gumboots that are no longer needed or old school

shoes. Succulents will slowly take over Bangor Public School so if you have any fantastic ones at home and

you are willing to donate some cuttings, it would be greatly appreciated.

Enrolment forms for the Eco Club will be available approximately Week 5 and we will meet during Week 6.

Any questions please feel free to contact Mr Walsh.

Get involved in the School Banking program Bangor Public School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and

develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School

Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2018 are:

Twister Power Handball

Secret Scratch Pad

Sparkle Glitter Pens

Glow Light

Mighty Boom Handball

Heat Reactor Pencils

Slushie Maker Cup

Zoom Flying Disc

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution

of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the

number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account.

You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

1. Online

Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

2. In branch

Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and

birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away.

They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit

wallet.

School Banking day is Thursday. Each week you need to attend School Banking at the Canteen from 8.55am.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2018 School Banking program

information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS SCHOOL BANKING

Calling for volunteers – we need your help! Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth

Bank School Banking program and to keep this program

running we need your help.

The program requires a few School Banking volunteers to

facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking

rewards alongside the volunteer School Banking Coordinator,

Melissa Murray. This only takes a small amount of your time

one day a week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide

support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop

vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.

Currently, school banking day is Thursday. Only ½ hour of your time is required to help out.

If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please fill in the tear off section below and

return it to the School Office.
