Greetings Prophets and Ladies,

The Supreme Session in Nashville was the best one that I can remember. Past Grand Monarch Dave Rebmann, his Lady Liz, Dick Faust, Jim Bainter, and the Prophets and Ladies of Abbas Grotto need to be congratulated!

Our theme for this year is “Dance thru Life with the Grotto.” Dancing does not mean that you are Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers; it can be that you are the helpful facilitator who shows the way to peaceful resolutions of problems that come your way. When you dance through life, you smooth the way for yourself and others.

In order to keep Grotto alive we MUST start paying more attention to bringing in new members. Membership is the key to our future. Speaking of keys, if a Prophet is a top line signer for three or four new Prophets, he will get a Gold Key; five or six new Prophets a Ruby Key; and, seven or more, a Diamond Key. These keys can be worn on your fez. Our membership year is from May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014. Therefore, some of us are going to have to get really busy as our membership year is almost half over!

The Grotto charity is The Humanitarian Foundation. It is my intention to continue the Grand Monarch’s “Five for Five” Enchanted Lantern Program. If you were able to join Dave, congratulations. If you thought about it, but didn’t get started, you can join our “5 for 5” with Otto. All you have to do is agree to buy one Enchanted Lantern per year for five years. Or, you could see Lois and gift any amount to help the children. Our Humanitarian Foundation helps families with special needs children. In recent years the Grotto and Shrine have joined together to help children having their Cleft Lip and Palate surgeries done at a Shrine Hospital. Our Dental Program will help to get their dental treatment completed so they can have their surgery. To date we have helped over 200 children in this program.

As we travel around the Realm, we look forward to seeing our many friends and making new ones.

AN iNTROduCTiON TO Gm OTTO THieRGARTOtto Thiergart was born July 3, 1948 in Davenport, Iowa to Connie Melendez Thiergart and Walter Carl Thiergart. His parents had six children: Charles, Marti Otto, George, James and Bernard.

Otto grew up on a dairy farm 35 miles west of Davenport. After High School he joined the Navy “to see the world.” His first year of training was Electricity and Electronics Schools, specializing in communications. Then it was off to sea! After over three years at sea, he was able to get shore duty at NAS Pensacola. He arrived in May of 1972, met Lois within nineteen days and they married ten months later.

After working a year in sales, he went to work at the Postal Service. In 1978 he and Lois started buying rental houses and Lois has been the property manager during these many years. After 30 years with the Postal Service Otto decided to retire, travel more and help Lois.

While working at the Postal Service he decided to go to college. He received his Associates Degree from Pensacola Junior College.

Lois, the love of his life, dance partner and work partner have been members of the Unity Church of Christianity for 38 years. Otto has served on the Church Board for thirteen years, four of those as Board President.

Otto and Lois are the proud parents of four children: Mark, Michael, Matthew and Lisa. They have added six beautiful grandchildren: Christopher, Kelly, Jocelyn, Gabriel, Sierra, Windrem and great grandson, Noah.

Otto joined the Masons in 1975, the Scottish Rite in April 1976, the Shrine in November 1976 and the Grotto in

April 1990. In the Grotto he served as an Officer 1993 to 1997, being the Monarch in 1997. He then went on to the Florida State Grotto Association, serving as President i n 2 0 0 4 . H e became involved in the Southeastern Grotto Association, s e r v i n g a s President in 2008. In June of 2006 he was elected to the Grand Line of the Grottoes of North America.

Otto has been instrumental in raising funds for the Humanitarian Foundation and the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. He has served and enjoyed working with the Grand Line for seven years, and, looks forward to serving you as Grand Monarch in the coming year.

The things that bring him joy are Lois, his family, Church, Masonry, friends everywhere, dancing, playing cards and watching sports.

“dANCiNG THRu liFe” piNSLois and her Grand Line Ladies are “Dancing thru Life with the Grotto” by selling Dancer Pins to everyone they meet. Lady Lois’ goal is to raise $4,000.00 or more for Humanitarian Foundation to benefit Children with Special Needs. Pins are only $10 each!

Lois says Otto’s theme of dancing through life is not about being Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers; it’s about smoothing the way for others. Every time you show a kindness or do something special to make it easier for one person or many people, you are “Dancing thru Life.” So let’s all work together and “Dance thru Life with the Grotto.”

Records, which released his biggest hit, 1953’s “Crying in the Chapel”; the song peaked in the Top Five and reached the Top Ten pop charts. In the latter half of the decade, he made a number of albums composed of Western songs. During this time, he acted in 39 episodes of the television program Frontier Doctor.

By the ‘60s, Rex Allen had re-signed with Mercury Records, which led to several minor hits and one major success — 1962’s “Don’t Go Near the Indians,” which returned the singer to the country Top Ten and the pop Top 20. During this time and the early ‘70s, he recorded albums for Disneyland, Buena Vista, and JMI. However, he was more prominent in this era as a narrator for many Walt Disney films and television programs, as well as a voice in several Disney cartoons.

Rex Allen was a Mason! When they learned he would be in their area, Prophets from Chelminar Grotto asked Grand Monarch Michael Wahl, who lived in California, to come to the Northwest and make Rex Allen a Prophet At Sight. A museum in his hometown, Willcox, AZ, was dedicated to Rex Allen, and the Governor of Arizona honored him. Allen occasionally appeared in Western film fare, where he remained as popular as ever. He died December 17, 1999, after his caretaker accidentally ran him over with a car; Allen was 78.

Better-known as the Arizona Cowboy, Rex Allen was the last of Hollywood’s singing cowboys. Between 1950 and 1954, Allen starred in 19 movies for Republic studios. The films launched a popular recording career for Allen, as he had several hit singles and albums in the early ‘50s, before the singing cowboys slowly disappeared from the charts.

The son of a fiddle player, Rex Allen was given his first guitar when he was 11 years old; his father intended Rex to support him at dances. Shortly afterwards, Allen began singing. After he finished high school, he was hired as a performer by a Phoenix radio station, but he only stayed there for a brief time. Instead, Allen hit the rodeo circuit. His career as a rodeo rider was short-lived, as he suffered an injury from a bull. The injury led Allen back to singing, and he was hired by WTTM in Trenton, NJ, in 1943. After WTTM he became a popular performer in the Windy City. He signed on with Mercury Record and he had a hit with “Afraid” in 1949. That same year, Allen went to Hollywood.

Bringing along a CBS network radio program, Allen approached Republic Pictures. The studio signed the singer to star in a film, The Arizona Cowboy, which was released in 1950. The movie was a success, beginning a string of 19 pictures that ran until February 1954. All of the movies were musical Westerns, starring Allen with a rotating cast of sidekicks. Frequently, he would star with Slim Pickens, but Buddy Ebsen and Fuzzy Knight also made their appearances in Allen’s films.

Allen’s film successes led to a hit record in 1951, “Sparrow in the Tree Top.” Released on Mercury Records, the single climbed into the country Top Ten and made it into the pop Top 30. Soon after its release, Allen signed with Decca

I sent out a request to many prophets of the Enchanted Realm asking them to share with me ways that they make Grotto an enjoyable experience. I am grateful to all who responded to my questions with ideas and comments. I would like to share with you some of the responses in hopes that they may inspire you to try them in your own Grotto. The heartbeat of Grotto is the fellowship we share in our local Grottoes. Let us try and make the valuable time we share together fun and meaningful.

Past Monarch Paul Kleinberger of Iran Grotto suggested “Theme Nights.” He used the example of having a “March Madness Night.” Each member was encouraged to wear the garb of their favorite college basketball team. As a part of the evening, prophets were encouraged to share stories of their athletic exploits in high school or college. You can pick from any number of activities or hobbies that one could share. It is a great opportunity to learn something about your fellow prophets as well.

Past Monarch David Gillespie of Sadir Kahn Grotto shared that they provide entertainment at their monthly socials. He reported they use local talent including music departments from high schools and community colleges. This has greatly improved their attendance. Their Grotto has also had special nights to honor 50 year members as well as ones to honor prophets who have championed the Humanitarian Foundation. These are very simple ways to honor prophets that any Grotto could replicate.

Terry Royce of Kallipolis Grotto wrote of how they invite their ladies to their meeting nights. They begin the evening by sharing a covered dish dinner. The prophets retire to the second floor and open the Grotto while the ladies or Boosterettes have a meeting in the social hall. My own Taleb Grotto functions in a similar manner. We have an appetizer table brought by the members followed by the two meetings, prophets in the lodge room/ladies in the social hall. We then join together for dinner and

entertainment. I have found this type of evening to be incredibly enjoyable. It is worth giving it a try if you have not considered it before.

Several Grottoes reported having meals at a local restaurant. Holiday parties were common as well. The main idea is to plan a year that appeals to the people who live in your community. One size does not fit all. What works in one place will not necessarily be effective in another. But the important thing is that we try and build our Grottoes. You never know if something will work unless you give it a try.

If you have more suggestions or thoughts for events or programs please do not hesitate to share them with me. Together we can share the fellowship that makes the Grotto so special and grow the Enchanted Realm.

Vip pROGRAmAny Prophet who sponsors a new member or reinstated member who has been out of the Grotto for at least 13 months between May 1st and April 30th will be entitled to attend the Grand Monarch’s VIP lunch or breakfast at the Supreme Council Convention in Mobile, Alabama.

Vip (uNdeR 40)In addition to the VIP program, anyone sponsoring a new or qualified reinstated Prophet that is under 40 years old will receive a special (under 40) pin.

KeY pROpHeTSAny Prophet sponsoring 3 new or qualified reinstated members between May 1st and April 30th will be awarded a distinctive GOLD Key emblem. Any Prophet sponsoring 5 new members will receive a RUBY Key and for 7 or more new members a DIAMOND Key. A Prophet will receive one (1) key of the highest level he has earned. If in attendance at the Supreme Council Session, the key will be presented by the Grand Monarch.

Sleep ON uS The first (10) ten Prophets sponsoring 10 new or qualified reinstated Prophets between May 1st and April 30th will receive one (1) FREE night stay in the convention host hotel during the Supreme Council Session. The first Prophet to sponsor twenty-five (25) new Prophets will receive four (4) free nights at host hotel.

ReCRuiTeR OF THe mONTHThe Prophet sponsoring the greatest number of new members initiated in the entire Realm in any month, with a minimum of two (2), will receive a $100.00 cash award. The initiation report must be turned in to Supreme Council office by the close of the following month. Awards will be split if a tie occurs.

mASTeR mASON NiGHTSThe Supreme Council will reimburse a Grotto 50% of the cost, up to $300.00 for a Master Mason night once a year. Contact the Supreme Council Office for details and a PRE-EVENT REQUEST FORM or find online at www.scgrotto.org under Secretary Forms. **Please note that a Pre-approval request form and a budget for the event must be sent to the Supreme Council Office attention Membership for approval prior to the event in

order for any reimbursement to be paid! Keep in mind that this is not to be used in conjunction with any other event.

mASONiC HOSpiTAliTYThe Supreme Council will reimburse a Grotto 50% of the cost up to $300.00, for sponsoring a hospitality event at a Master Mason Event. This must be pre-approved, including a budget and is limited to one (1) per year. You must present your program for pre-approval with budget and can obtain forms from the Supreme Council Office or online at www.scgrotto.org under Secretary Forms. This cannot be used with other events.

lOdGe ViSiTATiONS & ReFReSHmeNTSWe will reimburse a Grotto up to $75.00 for attending and providing refreshments at a Blue Lodge Meeting. You must obtain pre-approval from the Supreme Council Office. These forms may also be found under the Secretary Forms online at www.scgrotto.org.

Greetings Prophets, Ladies, and Daughters:What a wonderful time the Daughters had at the 123rd Annual Supreme Council Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. We want to thank Past Grand Monarch Dave Rebmann, his Lady Elizabeth, and all of the Prophets and Ladies of Abbas Grotto for the time and effort that went into their Grotto is the Music of Life Convention. The attention to detail was truly apparent to all in attendance.

The Daughters also want to thank the Prophets for the courtesies and hospitalities extended to us during the week. We were very honored to be given a table in the registration area to display our fezzes and literature about the Daughters of Mokanna.

PSMCO Lora Givler and I hope that everyone enjoyed our hospitality room as well as the performances by the late Patsy Cline.

The Humanitarian Foundation, the official charity of the Grottoes of North America, provides dental care for children with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, mental retardation, down syndrome and organ transplants. During the past five years the Foundation has served 4,500 children at a cost of $3 million, and more families are seeking our help than ever before. In order for the Humanitarian Foundation to keep up with requests for dental services, we need the help of all Prophets in the Realm.

Prophets, Ladies and Friends,

As your newest Past Grand Monarch, I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to all of you for the kindness and courtesy you showed to Liz and me during our year as Grand Monarch and First Lady. We were overwhelmed by the hospitality you showed us during our travels around the Realm, and by your generosity in support of the Humanitarian Foundation and Liz’s Project Bookworm. There were 2,324 Enchanted Lanterns purchased during the year, and because of your support, over 4,000 books were able to be donated to the Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago and the Providence Children’s Dental Clinic in Portland, Oregon. We want to again thank you for helping to bring smiles to so many children!

To all of you who were able to attend the annual Supreme Council session in Nashville, Tennessee, we thank you for your support. A lot of time and effort goes into planning and running a Supreme session, and a great many people put in countless hours of their time to make sure everything ran smoothly. I want to give special mention to PGM Dick Faust, Convention Director General, and his lady JoAnn, and to PM Jim Bainter, Convention Chairman, and his lady Linda, for their tireless efforts on behalf of the 123rd Session. They truly went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure everything ran smoothly. I also want to thank the Prophets and Ladies of Abbas Grotto, who worked so hard to make this convention a reality. Thank you to the Grand Line Officers and their Ladies, and to the Supreme Council Committee members and their

Ladies for their loyal support. Mostly, I want to thank all of you who attended the convention and supported our activities. You are the reason we work so hard, so you will enjoy yourself and take pride in being a Grotto member. If you had a good time, please let your fellow Prophets and Ladies know, and encourage them to attend in the future.

Lastly, I want to give a special thank you to my wife Liz. She supported me through this journey over the past eight years, from the election in Kansas City to the Red Tassel Party in Nashville, and everything in between. It was a wonderful ride, filled with friends new and old, fun and fellowship, travel far and wide, and adventures and memories we will talk about forever. All I can say is that it would not have been possible without your love and support, and I am the luckiest man in the world to have you by my side.

In closing, I will again say thank you for the opportunity you gave me to serve you as your Grand Monarch. It has been my great honor to be your representative to the Masonic community, and I pray that you found my service acceptable. I pledge my continued support to Grand Monarch Otto and Lady Lois, and the other Grand Line Officers and their Ladies, and to the Grottoes of North America. I owe you all a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid, and I will spend the rest of my life trying to live up to the honor you have bestowed upon me. Thank you!

We cordially invite you to attend the 124th Annual Supreme council Session of the Grottoes of North America from June 22 through the 29th, 2014 in the beautiful city of Mobile, Alabama. The headquarters will be the magnificent Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel overlooking the Mobile River. Conference registration forms are available on line at www.scgrotto.org. Forms will also be available in the next Grotto Magazine. We urge you to register early as events have limited numbers…and you don’t want to miss any of the fun!


HumANiTARiAN FOuNdATiON mATTeRSWell Prophets, here we are the start of our new Grand Monarch’s year. The members of the Humanitarian Foundation want to thank you for your continued support of the dental program. What a year it has been! With your support the program is moving forward and provided care for 1,516 children in 2012. Now that we have started a new Grand Monarch year, we need your support again. We are asking you to think about stepping up to the next level in your Fairchild Society giving if you are a member, if not, consider becoming a member of the Fairchild Society. Also, keep in mind that Grand Monarch Otto Thiergart is continuing the 5 for 5 Pledge Program and is asking all Prophets to sign up for 5 Enchanted Lanterns, one per year for 5 years, which will help one child for 5 years receive a yearly exam, or 5 children can receive an exam. Think about it. Tooth decay is the number one childhood disease today and special needs children are even more susceptible because of the medications they may have to take.

It might also be a time for you and your Grotto, to step up to the plate and think about adopting a child. If your Grotto is in a state that provides dental care for all children, as a few states do, we have children that need

a Grotto to sponsor their treatment, as there is no Grotto close to them. You will be connected to a child that the members can sponsor and know about. The dental program pays for their treatment, but the Grotto members will have a child they can see and can make their contributions to help with their dental care. At the convention in Nashville, there were 13 children adopted by various Grottoes. Consider adopting one if your Grotto is not sponsoring a child currently. Contact the Humanitarian Foundation Office and Linda Stratton can help connect you with a deserving child and their family.

As we approach the holiday season with the parties, family gatherings and the end of 2013, think about making a charitable donation to the Humanitarian Foundation, Grottoes official charity, for a yearend tax write off. Together, we can all make such a difference to some special needs children.

SAmiS GROTTORichmond, VirginiaIn July, several Grottoes in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic heeded a call for assistance from Samis Grotto, located in Richmond, VA, the capital of the Confederacy. It was a warm and balmy weekend in the Old Dominion, but the Southern hospitality was even warmer.Members of Ubar, Azim, and Abacca Grottoes came together at the old theater that Samis Grotto calls home, all in an effort to help them initiate 12 new Prophets into the Realm. Samis Grotto had been struggling for some time, but with a little help from fellow Prophets, it is now back on track to become one of the best Grottoes in the country.

They donate their time and talent for the Laurel and Hardy Museum and and recently for the annual Oliver Hardy Festival in Harlem, Georgia. The 24th Annual Oliver Hardy Festival Program was dedicated to Dennis and Dale. The city of Harlem stated, “Your dedication to the comedic duo, the City of Harlem and the fans who love you dearly shines no matter where you go. And for that the City of Harlem and those you have touched anticipate welcoming you both home every year.”

Our family wanted to let you know how much we appreciate the extreme generosity your foundation has shown and given to us. Our daughter Violet was born with a cleft palate and faced many challenges in her first months of life. We

were truly tested as parents and people with the struggle of twins, and a special needs baby. By the grace of God, her twin sister was healthy and easy going. Shriners Hospital in Chicago corrected her palate and told us about your organization. I recently went back to work as a substitute teacher to help make ends meet. The financial assistance you have given us has been such a blessing. Please accept our gratitude and many thanks. I have included a picture of Violet today!
