P erhaps some of the lyrics from Kenny Chesney’s country-western song

“Back Where I Come From” best describe the charming community of Ramona.

When he sings about a small country town where “the clock ticks and the cattle grazed, time passed with amazing grace,” it certainly sounds like Ramona.

And when he references the sun-shine and being proud of his town, that, too, illustrates the Valley of the Sun, where hardworking families take pride in calling Ramona their home.

But more than the friendly ambiance and fantastic year-round weather, Ramona offers a variety of activities and events for residents and visitors alike.

Some crowd pleasers include the Ramona Rodeo, Country Fair, Oktoberfest, Christmas Tree Lighting, HawkWatch, a variety of crafts and art shows, and home and garden tours.

Historians can appreciate the

preserved treasures on display at the Guy B. Woodward Museum, while wine connoisseurs have their pick of a few dozen tasting rooms. Many area wineries are members of the Ramona Valley Vineyard Association, and several have pro-duced award-winning wines.

Downtown Main Street offers shoppers the opportunity to pursue antiques and specialty items, as they enjoy two of the community’s newest landmarks — a Casey Tibbs mural and an equine mural.

Local eateries boast homemade dishes as good as mom used to make. And for those who enjoy the great outdoors, Ramona is loaded with equestrian, hiking and bicy-cling trails, two regulation golf courses, a paintball park, swimming pools, tennis clubs, campgrounds, and so much more.

Not only is Ramona a welcoming community that encourages visi-tors to stop and explore, it’s a place where local folk are proud to say, “That’s where I come from.” n

Some Must-See MuralsBesides the growing number of

creative artists living and working in Ramona, the town is

quickly becoming popular for two new Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project murals deemed a must-see.

The first mural is located in the heart of town on the Town and Country Real Estate and Home Loan building at Tenth and Main streets. It is home to two paintings of the community’s beloved Casey Tibbs, a well-known cowboy and former resident of Ramona. Pictured in his heyday, Tibbs is shown heaving a saddle over his shoulder and riding a bucking bronco.

The second masterpiece is located just a few blocks away at 369 Main St., on the side of the Ramona Business Barn. It promotes a welcoming message from the equine community for residents and visitors alike. Artist Linda Churchill created four different views of the equine lifestyle, including a barrel racer, farmers on horseback, a Western rider and an English rider.

Both murals were commissioned by a group of prominent business people who are part of the Ramona H.E.A.R.T. Mural Project. Organizers say more murals are under way. Visit www.ramonamurals.com. n

Marching Down Main Street

On the third Saturday in May, hundreds of folks will march down Main Street to participate

in the annual Main Street Parade. Businesses and nonprofit organiza-

tions, along with school bands, four-legged friends and talented equestrian riders, will stroll down the street, waving a hearty “hello” to the crowds lined up along the sidewalks between 14th and Fifth streets.

They will travel by floats, boats, cars or on foot, and in many cases will march over the pavement holding banners and signs that promote a community connection and town pride.

Announcers will be stationed throughout the parade route, broad-casting details about each group of participants.

“The Ramona Main Street Parade

is going to be fun for everyone,” says Joani Georgeson of the Ramona Outdoor Community Center. “This year’s parade highlights ‘Home Sweet Home — Everything that Makes Ramona, Ramona.’”

The family-friendly parade will start promptly at 10 a.m. on May 18 and con-tinue until all parade entries have made their way down Main Street. The event is free, and lawn chairs are permitted. n

“Welcome to Nuevo!”That is what would have appeared on

the lovely sign created by Leslie Souza at the corner of Highland Valley Road and Highway 67 a few years ago, had it not been for a significant change that occurred in 1886.

Back then, the town of Ramona was officially known as Nuevo — from the Spanish word for “new.” Although the name Ramona was the first choice of town fathers, there already was a California town by that name somewhere north of here.

So Nuevo it was — until that budding little town did not prosper and gave up its post office designation, therefore making the name Ramona available.

It was land developer Milton Santee who was credited for naming the town. He had purchased 3,200 acres for the Santa Maria Land & Water Company (the predecessor to Ramona Municipal Water District) in the area known as the Santa Maria Valley.

“Ramona” is the name of a best-selling book by Helen Hunt Jackson, published in 1884, about the plight of the Indians and its fictional

Ramona

the ‘new’ name

character, Ramona. In more current times, the name of

the town has been confusing to some visitors traveling here looking for the location of “Ramona Pageant,” the state historic play based on Hunt’s book.

As locals know, of course, the pageant takes place in Hemet, about a two-hour drive from here.

Among those visitors several years ago was a tour bus whose driver stopped at a business on Main Street to ask the proprietor for directions. Needless to say, his passengers did not get to Hemet that day in time to see the play. n — Ruth Lepper

Conversation with realtors is the best way to put your finger on the movement of a small town,

particularly a town like Ramona.Katie McNorton of Coldwell Banker

Country Realty said it’s an area that’s growing with younger families along with the retired.

Stephanie Norvell of Town and Country Real Estate said, “There’s more sun shining down on us here, and we’re real busy right now.”

McNorton said some may say Ramona hasn’t grown, “But we have four banks now, so that’s an indication of growth. More than ever, people who move to Ramona want to have animals, chickens — plenty of open space.

“They don’t mind the 20- to 30-minute drive down the hill to major shopping locations,” McNorton added. “Heck, people in the subdivision metro-politan areas take that long in traffic.”

Commercially, Norvell said, “Real estate is what makes the world go around.”

Both realtors have lived in Ramona for more than 30 years, so they can

Page 15: The Guide to Ramona California

produce evidence of many changes.“When I first came here, there was

one stoplight,” said McNorton. “I can’t tell you how many there are now.”

They both concur that people want to live here because they want space. Most of the lots are a half-acre or more. That’s huge compared to what is available near the city.

“People come up, look around, and it generally takes about a year or so to make up their minds,” said McNorton. “It depends a lot on the economy and market value on how quickly they can sell their home down the hill.”

But Norvell warns, “Prices are going up, and that may leave the condos as the best opportunity. “We have several condo complexes here.”

Still, she concluded, “You get a lot more for your money in Ramona.” n

Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony

The community, along with members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3783, will

commemorate past and present veterans and active-duty military with three ceremonies on Memorial Day.

The first ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Memorial Day, this year on May 27, with the JROTC color guard from Ramona High School, followed by the National Anthem and a keynote speaker.

Gold Star Mothers also will be honored. During the week prior to the ceremony, local Boy Scouts will place small American flags on the gravesites

of veterans buried here. A floral wreath will be placed on a grave by VFW representatives.

The cemetery is located at 532 Ash St. with ample parking.

Another ceremony will take place following the cemetery, at the World War II Memorial at the ball field on Ninth Street, and at the Vietnam War Memorial at Schwaesdall Winery, 17677 Rancho de Oro Dr. off Highway 67.

The day’s events will conclude with a picnic at the VFW Post, 2247 Kelly Ave. Call the post at 760-789-7888. n

From a rather modest entrance on Main Street, a new sign serves as an introduction to a wealth of

Ramona history that’s inside the Guy B. Woodward Museum.

Since 1983, visitors from other parts of the country have found the

artifacts and structures interesting and informative. Guests are attracted here via national listings.

“We’ve even had people from France, England and Canada,” said Ken Woodward, whose late father, Guy, began assembling his collection in the late 1960s. “He first had them displayed upstairs in the old Town Hall.

“We also have frequent custom-ers from those living in the San Diego Country Estates timeshares.”

Woodward said the people seem to

While Ramona grape growers and wine makers have been known to

compare popular Napa Valley wines to the local varieties, it’s really the wine connoisseurs who are calling Ramona “The next Napa.”

Local residents Linda and Scott Poortinga describe the region’s wines as being “delight-ful,” and say, “Ramona could very well be the next Napa.”

Their friends agree, as they sit on the terrace at Milagro Farm Vineyard and Winery. All three couples believe Ramona has what it takes to put its wines on the map. They reference the attractive country town for being geographically friendly, and

having ideal year-round weather conditions and a growing number of award-winning wines. “Ramona wines are surprisingly delicious!” says Scott, clarifying that people have certain percep-tions about Ramona, and wine isn’t usually one of them.

El Cajon resident Jim Sheppard describes how Ramona wines are different from other regions because they are made from locally grown grapes and the wine making process is very different.

Inside the Lenora Winery tasting room, Sheppard says he enjoys the quick and pleasant drive to Ramona, and adds, “It’s a lot closer than Temecula.”

staffed with friendly, knowledgeable individuals, and often the wine makers themselves are on hand to personally share details about the wines, property and history of the Ramona blends, which include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Muscat, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and many others.

Brenda and Doug Morton from Lakeside were introduced to the region a few months ago when a group of friends decided to give Ramona tasting rooms a try. They fell in love with the town and say they’ve been up several times since.

While some tasting rooms have established weekend and weekday hours, others are available by appointment.

Adults 21 and older are encouraged to visit the tasting rooms and decide for themselves whether or not Ramona will be the next Napa. n

Through the help of a volunteer his-torical society, headed by Judy Nachazel, Woodward has managed to continue the legacy of his father.

“We have a few county bus tours, mostly from assisted living facilities, but we’d like to see more,” he said. “Also because Ramona overall has so much to offer, particularly with the development of our wine country.”

It’s a treasure of early Western culture with a complex of historic build-ings, including the famous Verlaque House, shops, wagons, antique exhibits and special artifacts.

The 1886 Verlaque House is the only western adobe home of French provin-cial design still in existence — complete with period furniture. An early doctor’s office, an 1840 hand-carved walnut

Ramona Airport on Display This Fall

Airplanes, helicopters and Warbirds will be on display at the Ramona Airport annual Open House in

September.Displays typically show how

the airport figures in backcountry activities. Some of which include fighting wildfires, search and rescue, water dropping rescues, and civil air patrol.

Smokey Bear often attends to represent the National Forest Service. There’s usually a Props and Rods show, a large static display of aircraft, opportunities to take airplane rides,

and chances to explore Classic Rotors, the world’s only helicopter museum that holds operational aircraft. The backcountry’s water-dropping Super Scoopers are based at Ramona during the fall fire season.

A pancake breakfast and lunch will be prepared by Los Amigos Mexican Food.

The airport, located at 2926 Montecito Rd., will be open on the day of the event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 760-271-8805 or visit www.sdcounty.ca.gov. n

above the property approximately six miles. Oak Tree Ranch has a rich history starting out as a “tent village” in the early 1900s, to a “turkey ranch” in the 1940s to the beautiful housing community it currently is. If you Love country living . . . you’ll LOVE Oak Tree Ranch!

Kid Fun!skills, including dribbling, passing and shooting.

Girl’s softball starts up in the spring, allowing kids from 8 to 14 the opportunity to learn softball skills while competing against other teams on a weekly basis.

Ramona Rebels Elite cheer squad runs year-round. Ramona PONY Baseball League offers kids from 4 to 14 a chance to learn fielding, hitting, and pitching. The league also runs clinics and tournaments throughout the year.

Spring soccer, organized by parent volunteers, teaches kids the basics. The season is more relaxed than the fall league and in lieu of score-keeping, the co-ed players are cheered for by their family and friends at the sidelines of each Sunday afternoon game.

Some of the spontaneous activi-ties might include a visit to the Guy B. Woodward Museum, a bike ride, kite flying, or a visit to one of several local parks that have swings and really cool play structures.

Additional programs include Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, 4-H programs, organized hikes at Dos Picos County Park, swim leagues, year-round tennis lessons at Riviera Oaks and San Diego Country Estates, martial arts programs, Ramona Wrestlers program, equestrian lessons at ranches through-out town, and much, much more. n

Most kids love to stay busy with indoor and outdoor activities. Ramona offers a wide variety of

organized and spontaneous things to do for children of all ages.

Two football leagues start their train-ing programs in the middle of summer. Both Ramona Pop Warner and Ramona Youth Football offer players the oppor-tunity to learn the elements of the sport, including speed, agility, conditioning and teamwork.

In the fall, the Boys and Girls Club of Ramona organizes two soccer leagues — recreational and competitive. Both offer children between the ages of five and 13 the opportunity to learn basic and advanced skills of the game.

Also in the fall is a winter basket-ball league. Children in grades three through eight learn basic ball-handling

A Racing WonderlandWithout question, this area has some

of the most unique motorsports complexes in Southern California

with a historical twist. Where else can you have a choice of drags, short track racing and backcountry motorcycling.

Alternating on weekends in Barona, drivers can test their skills either on an eighth-of-a-mile drag strip or a quarter-mile dirt oval. They are primarily enjoyed by locals, but it’s not a rarity for outside competitors to appear.

Others may choose the rugged paths through the mountains nearby. This backcountry challenge is where

NASCAR’s five-time champion Jimmie Johnson and seven-time motocross titleholder Ricky Johnson traveled in their teens.

Although unrelated, they have remained lasting friends. They pursued their racing careers later.

The Barona Speedway mixes its night shows with stocks, dwarf cars and junior sprint cars, and an occasional demolition derby. The drag strip, sanctioned by the National Hot Rod Association, affords a rare outlet to reach high speeds in a short amount of time.

To some degree, it might be described as the last bastion for this type of racing in San Diego County. Through the years, three drag strips — including Ramona’s San Diego Raceway — and eight speedways and road courses have disappeared. The NHRA reports that strips throughout the country are half the size of the standard quarter-mile because of space limitations.

Barona Speedway action starts at 5 p.m., while the Barona 1/8th Mile Drags gates open at 6:30 a.m. n

people might line up to take their aim on 15 busy courts in the Valley of the Sun Pitchers Duel Horseshoe Tournament at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center.

After a 10 a.m. start, the tournament will continue for five hours, with $750 dangling as a team first price. Second is worth $450, and third-place participants will receive $300.

Uniquely, It’s a blind draw, which gives the event a level playing field for the single elimination. Entrance fee for those 21 years of age and older is $30; spectators enter free.

Competition is expected to come from throughout San Diego County. For information, call the Ramona Chamber of Commerce at 760-789-1311. n

Ramona is an Antique Haven

Ramona has become a destination for antique shoppers. The old town area is home to five shops and malls.

Leading the way is The Original Old Town Ramona Antique Fair at 734 Main St. Owner Sandee Salvatore likes to tell customers to “look for the maroon awning.” Can’t miss it.

There are about 50 vendors in the Fair, featuring eclectic finds that include vintage clothing and hats, home décor, collectibles, jewelry and “repurposed” furniture — those are pieces that have been repaired and repainted.

This also is the place to go for a nostalgic trip into the section of old-

Retail establishments are blossoming in Ramona.

The variety of shops is enough to make even a larger town burst with pride. Merchants cater to many interests — romantics and those marking special occasions make a point of visiting Sun Valley Florist and Jewelry World and Loan; active folks frequent Kirk’s Bike Shop; and horse and pet owners love Bob’s Hats and find the tack and feed stores essential.

Perhaps the most encouraging sign is seeing new businesses opening and existing ones expanding.

Goodwill, Adorn Boutique, and Bonnie’s Nook have recently opened. Candace Christman of Rusty Scraps, located in Affordable Treasures, says business has been great.

On a clear night, the stars and the moon quietly shine over the peaceful Ramona valley.

But once a year, starbursts of another kind loudly illuminate the sky, celebrating Independence Day with a fireworks display presented by the Ramona Rotary Club at Olive Peirce Middle School.

The program runs from 5 to 9:30 p.m., beginning with games for the kids and food and treat vendors, and finishing with fire-works at 9 p.m.

The tradition of exploding fireworks on the Fourth of July goes back to the first anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and has come to symbolize the many freedoms that Americans hold dear. The

event brings families, friends and neighbors together for a common purpose. In that spirit of commu-nity, the Ramona Fourth of July fireworks show is a grassroots effort, made possible by generous donations of money and time by a variety of local individuals, businesses and groups.

What to bring: chairs/blanket, jacket, snacks or a picnic, and friends.

Do not bring alcohol, tobacco, animals or pets.

Make the most of your evening by arriving early, prearranging a meeting spot if separated, and planning to stay a little while after the finale to avoid the traffic rush. n

Fun Time at the FairCountry fairs once a year play to the

emotions of the residents in a rural town. It’s playtime for contests,

local musicians, a visiting carnival and plenty of food.

Ramona is no exception, as towns-people gather again July 25 to 28, when the beautiful surroundings of the Ramona Outdoor Community Center are converted into a frolicking fair-grounds.

According to Bob Murray, Chamber of Commerce president and chairman of the fair, activities are scheduled from 4 to 11 p.m. the first two days and all

day on the weekends.“The four-day fair will feature rides,

carnival games, lots of animals, a battle of the bands, pie and watermelon eating contests, kids’ dance groups, martial artists, karaoke singers, food, beer and wine gardens,” he said.

Animals are sure to put the “country” in Ramona Country Fair. The Chamber is working on setting up a petting zoo and an exhibit of local llamas, and animals entered in the Ramona Junior Fair will begin arriving at the fairgrounds during the last two days of the Country Fair.

Near closing time on Sunday, this year’s Ramona Idol, the victor of a community singing contest, will be crowned.

Murray said he expects between 75 to 100 vendors offering a variety of food and crafts. There’s no admission charge

A panoramic view from the top is worth the hike.

Photos By tracy roLLIng

There are plenty of hiking and equestrian trails designed for all skill levels in and around Ramona.

One of the most challenging happens to offer a panoramic view like few can. It is the trail at the Mt. Gower Open Space Preserve.

Located at the far end of San Diego Country Estates, a staging area can be found at the end of Gunn Stage Road.

From the parking area, a wooden kiosk points the way toward the more than 4.8 miles of hiking trails.

To the right is a large loop designed for novice hikers.

To the left is a trail that begins with a somewhat sandy terrain and gradually becomes rocky. It is designed

for the sure-footed, taking travelers beside large boulders as well as through dried-up ravines.

A little farther into the hike, the switchbacks become closer together and the incline becomes apparent as the elevation changes from a trivial 1,625 feet to a whopping 2,650 feet.

The area is home to a variety of native plant life, including the chaparral yucca. Known to bloom when it reaches full maturity after about five years, it produces a large, stalk-like flower that erupts from a cluster of spiky, low- lying leaves in late spring. When the bell-shaped petals begin to drop, the

During that period he turned back chal-lenger Yvon Durelle in one of the most memorable bouts of all time. He was knocked down four times before putting the Canadian away.

And, he scored a memorable knockout of Tony Anthony.

Nicknamed “The Old Mongoose,” Moore holds the record for the

most career knockouts at 131. He ranks fourth on Ring Magazine’s list of “100 greatest punchers of all time,” has the longest reign in light heavyweight history and is rated by prominent boxing website BoxRec as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer of all time.

Moore adopted the area and was often seen walking along Main Street.

Assistant Manager Lori Woosley.Early this year, Unicorn Books and

Gifts moved into a new storefront, doubling in size. “Business is good — really good, actually,” says co-owner Stacy Bart.

Well-established stores are also seeing an upsurge in shopping activity.

Linda Thomsen says she sees business growing at the Old Barn Door Antiques, located in the Ramona Business Barn. Besides the antiques store and consignment shops, the Business Barn is also home to Ramona Trophy and several non-retail busi-nesses, including the Ramona Outdoor Community Center office.

Victoria Townsend of Squash Blossom Trading Company says, “I find that people seem to have a more positive outlook. More locals are shopping.” She’s so encouraged that she signed a new three-year lease.

Another storeowner, Sandee

Salvatore of The Original Old Town Ramona Antique Fair, is happy that residents are supporting area busi-nesses. “We have so many wonderful stores here!”

Not only are locally owned stores close to customers, the owners often live here, too, and take pride in offering personal service.

It makes sense to save time and gas-oline — and support the local economy — by shopping close to home. n

The “Pick of the Patch” pumpkin contest organized

by Ramona Home Journal may very well outweigh all the other pumpkin-growing competitions.

Last year’s winning pumpkin weighed a whopping 394 pounds and was grown by Ramona resident Chris Ulmer, who described the multi- colored giant as an organic cross-breed.

Ulmer was up against some pretty hefty competi-tion, including second-place winner Tom Stephen, who raised a 378-pound Fredericks Giant.

Both men say they planted their crops in late spring, and watched,

waited and watered, hoping the gourd-like squash would grow into contest winners. And they were right!

This year’s fourth annual competition is open to the public and gardeners who live with-in the 92065 ZIP code.

The first-place prize is $100, and the pumpkin grower, alongside his or her winning pumpkin, will be featured on the cover of the Ramona Home Journal October issue. The second-place

prize is $50, and the third-place prize is $25.

Deadline to enter is Friday, Sept. 6, and entry forms may be collected at 726 D Street. Visit www.RamonaJournal.com or call 760-788-8148. n — Tracy Rolling

plant produces an offshoot near its base, ceases to grow and often dies.

Other native shrubbery includes oak trees, coastal sage, as well some wildflowers.

Birds of prey can be seen soaring overhead, and signage indicates that snakes and other wildlife are present.

Though the trails are not well-marked, there are a significant number of homes at the base of the mountain.

Hikers should bring plenty of water, wear appropriate clothing, and review the maps at the trailhead before venturing out.

This hike is no walk in the park, but it does offer a fantastic panoramic view from the top, which makes it all worthwhile. n — Tracy Rolling

There is a section in town where special recognition is paid to neighboring communities. These

are the streets that bear the names of other towns. They are all within walking distance of each other.

They are San Diego Avenue, El Cajon Lane and Pamo Road, along with Julian, Pala, Wynola and Ramona streets.

Some are paved while others retain their country character as dirt roads. Each one is less than a mile long, with the exception of Ramona Street, which measures out more than one mile.

Did those communities reciprocate and name any streets after our town? Some did, some didn’t.

Julian has Ramona Drive, and El Cajon has Ramona Court. Then there are three communities that didn’t make it onto Ramona maps but gave a shout-out, regardless. Oceanside has Ramona Way; Vista, Ramona Lane; and Spring Valley, Ramona Avenue.

So, what’s in a name? It all depends on the street where one lives. n

Also included are a cowboy bunk house, blacksmith shop and a tack room, built in 1874. A library and research center are richly stocked with docu-ments, photos, oral and written autobiographies and books of important local history about pioneers, ranchers, cowboys, Indians and merchants.

The museum was selected by the Cowboy Hall of Fame as the exhibit center for the Casey Tibbs Memorial Exhibit.

“Visitors tell us they’ve never seen a display that tells the history so well about a part of the American Southwest, particularly the Indians, who lived here 2,000 years ago,” he said. “My dad always wanted them (visitors) to get a closer look at the artifacts. The museum says a lot about the community.”
