Old MacDonald’sFarm?

hen most of us thinkabout egg production,

we picture chickens struttingthrough barnyards, foragingthrough grass, and sitting ontheir carefully built nests to protect the eggs they’ve justlaid. Unfortunately, this idyllicscene is not the reality ofmodern egg production.

No Sunny Side for Laying Hens

Nearly 300 million—approximately 98 percent—of egg-laying hens in the United States are confined in wire “battery cages” so small they can’t even spread their wings. Suspended over their own waste, the hens are unable to engage in many of their natural behaviors, including nesting, dust bathing, perching, and foraging, let alone roaming, walking comfortably, or even feeling the earth under theirfeet. Overcrowded in tiny barren cages, these birds endure lives ofdaily frustration and suffering.

Adding to their poor welfare, when these hens are still chicks many have parts of their beaks sliced off without the benefit of anesthetics. And when their productivity wanes and their bodiesslow down, they can be starved until they lose up to 30 percent of their bodyweight to increase egg production by manipulating their laying cycles.

More than 95 percent of U.S. egg-laying hensdon’t even have room to spread their wings.

Our treatment of these social, intelligent animals is so abusive thatsome routine conditions in the U.S. egg industry are already illegalin the European Union.

You Can Help End This Cruelty!

Fortunately, each one of us can help prevent animal abuse—everytime we sit down to eat. As consumers, we can make a differencefor these animals by following theThree Rs :

Reduce our consumption of eggs Refine our egg consumption by never purchasing battery eggs Replace eggs in our diet with nonanimal foods

Our purchasing practicesmake us enormously powerful, so please joinus in speaking out forcaged hens and calling on restaurants, grocerystores, and cafeterias to stop selling eggs from caged birds.
