The new design of the Typ 906 instigated Porsche’s path to overall dominance in world sportscar racing. At the age of 28, Ferdinand Piech finally took charge of the Porsche racing department and began to instil a triple doctrine of low weight, low drag and more power. The 906, or Carrera 6, came out of the 904 project, however the body was no longer a structural member attached to a box chassis. The two-seater fibreglass 906 body now covered a tubular steel space-frame coupe and was refined in the wind tunnel in an effort to reduce drag, the first ever use of this technique by Porsche. The car had a very low and long protruding nose, spherical windscreen with gullwing doors and a large sloping, louvered Plexiglas engine cover forming part of the Kamm tail rear bodywork, which was which hinged at the rear end and could be lifted easily to uncover the complete engine and transmission units. The cockpit was very Spartan to reduce weight further and once the body was mounted onto the chassis the Carrera 6 weighed just 620 Kgs.

Powered by a 911-based 6-cylinder, Type 901 engine, the crankcase was made from a special lightweight magnesium-alloy, equipped with twin triple-choke Weber carburettors and twin-plug ignition; output was 210 bhp. This was mated to a fully synchronized Type 906-5 speed magnesium-alloy gearbox with ZF limited-slip differential, available with six different sets of easily interchangeable gears which were all homologated along with three different final drive ratios.

Fifty two Carrera 6’s were constructed, plus nine prototypes with six-cylinder injection and four with 2.0 litre eight-cylinder engines. Private owners could collect their new race-car from the factory after paying DM 45,000.

Chassis 906 101Chassis 906 101 was manufactured in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and was the first 906 series chassis built. Fitted also with a 901 engine and gearbox with the same numbering (906 101), the car was finished in Irish Green and supplied on 12th January 1966 via Porsche Cars (Great Britain) AFN for Mike de Udy and UK registered – LJJ 16D. The car was one of two Irish Green cars imported by AFN (the other being chassis number 906 129) and both were raced extensivley by Mike de Udy to promote the newly formed Porsche Cars (Great Britain) Limited, born out of AFN Limited, to handle the importation of all Porsche vehicles to the UK.According to the latest research published in the 2008 book - Porsche 906 by Jürgen Barth and Ulrich Trispel, the race history for 101 is as listed below. It should however be noted that it is not possible to be 100% precise about the individual race histories for both 101 and 129, since both cars were raced extensively by D’Udy at the same for AFN and in the same colour. It is known that D’Udy alternated races between both the cars, depending on which car was most race ready. It is also known that 129 was transported for customs purposes and entered into all races as 101. Thus it very difficult to accurately separate the two individual race histories.

In 2004 the car was found sitting unused for fifteen years in its old race trailer. It was acquired and brought back to Europe and sold to French collector, Bruno Lafourcade, who commissioned German historic Porsche specialists Freisinger, in Karlsruhe, to carry out an extensive chassis/body restoration. The original engine, meanwhile, was fully rebuilt by Ventoux Moteur, M. Rondoni, of Carpentras. A comprehensive file of the restoration bills and photographs accompany the car on its file.

Technical Inspection by Jürgen Barth

In his capacity as specialist Porsche historian, former Porsche works Competition Director Jurgen Barth inspected 906 101 at Karlsruhe on 1st June 2005 and produced a comprehensive inspection report which is remains with the car on its file.

Barth confirms the competition history above and also writes; “At the time I was in my last year of apprenticeship in the Porsche firm and I had the opportunity to work on this car. I remember this

green car very well, as it was different from the other 906s usually painted in white. The car was destined for Mike de Udy from England, who was not unfamiliar to Porsche, because he had already bought a Typ 904 before the Typ 906”. An in-depth inspection at different stages of the restoration with detailed photographs taken by Barth, he summarises at the end of his report; “The examined car is the original ‘906 101’, registered ‘LJJ 16D’ in England by Mike de Udy. A lot of details, such as the roof opening, the base colour and the damaged and repaired parts prove its authenticity. The engine housing and the gear box also have the original number.”

Following its immaculate restoration, 906 101 was also fully prepared for historic competition use, including fitment of a safety certified Premier fuel tank and the issue of new F.I.A. HTP paperwork and in 2006 the car was raced at Le Mans Classic. This immensely interesting Porsche 906 was acquired by the Harrison collection in 2009, in whose ownership it has continued to be maintained in superb condition by both Freisinger and RUF. During the last three years the car has also covered several thousand faultless road miles, as it remains of course, UK registered on its original UK registration number - LJJ 16D.

Prior to coming to the market again, 906 101 has been back to Freisinger to be re-painted at considerable expense and is now offered for sale in immaculate condition.

An opportunity to acquire a fully authenticated and rare historic Porsche race car, which can be used both on the road as well as being highly eligible for the very best historic events, such as Le Mans Classic, Tour Auto and many more.! ! ! ! Price £ POA
