A warm welcome from Jon Pridham, Managing Director

£300,000 programme of investment

We’ve had a few sailing icons grace our front cover over the years but I’ve never been prouder to feature a star than Natasha Lambert. She’s a truly inspirational young woman and I implore you to read about her courageous challenges on page 10.

Haven magazine returned this summer thanks to all of your great feedback. You told us you love picking a copy up to find out about the goings on at Cowes Yacht Haven so look out for another edition coming your way later this year. If you have any ideas or suggestions for future editions, please get in touch.

Of course, the summer’s main event, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week will be upon us sooner than we think. Keep reading to find out what exciting plans we

have for the week’s entertainment. I can’t wait to once again be at the heart of the celebrations. The atmosphere will be amazing.

We’d love to hear how you are enjoying the festivities so don’t forget to send us your photos on Facebook and Twitter (@cowesyachthaven). We might even pick your snap as our winner of the Photo of the Week competition.

Welcome aboard

Cowes Yacht Haven has substantially reinvested in the marina and boatyard this year, purchasing a new crane, refurbishing another and completing a thorough programme of dredging to maintain minimum depths in low spring tides.

Jon Pridham, managing director of Cowes Yacht Haven, said: “We’re committed to investing in the services we have available at Cowes Yacht Haven in order to maintain our position as the best destination for

sailing. These investments will benefit everyone who uses our marina.”

The new mobile crane will safely lift boats weighing up to 15 tons and has improved the boatyard services already available at Cowes Yacht Haven, allowing a wider range of customers to make use of the lift and launch packages. The crane joins the wealth of existing facilities and services at the marina, including a 30 ton hoist, on site engineers, boat repairers and electricians.

The marina has also recently refurbished its two ton Hiab crane to make storing boats ashore as simple as possible. The refurbishment will ensure the crane operates at its maximum potential for lifting small dry sailboats such as Dragons, Etchells, RS Elites and RIBs, masts and engines.

Jenkins Marine completed the major dredging project that cleared 15,000m3 of silt in April. It has secured Cowes Yacht Haven’s ability to cater for small superyachts and large boats in its marina over the coming years.

Upgraded FREE Wi-Fi service for Cowes Yacht Haven

Visiting seafarers at Cowes Yacht Haven might not want to stray their berths now that the marina

and WightFibre have teamed up to install an upgraded free high speed Wi-Fi service across the whole site.

WightFibre have installed an entirely new technology infrastructure, including ten new access points for the dual-band fibre optic broadband. This ensures every boat receives the very best speeds.

Hundreds of users at any one time will be able to access the internet for free on the 1Gb (1000 Mb) network, which will allow them to browse web pages, access apps and update social media channels.

A premium paid for service is available for those looking to stream films or television at the low price of £3 per day, £5 for three days, £10 per week or £25 per month.

Jon Pridham, managing director of Cowes Yacht Haven, said: “In this day and age, wireless internet is essential to our visitors and along with all the other services the marina provides, like showers and toilets, we think our guests shouldn’t have to pay for it.

“WightFibre have significantly upgraded our Wi-Fi offering so that no matter where you are berthed, you will be able to access the internet, for free, from your boat.”

John Irvine, CEO of WightFibre echoed this, “The connectivity now available at Cowes Yacht Haven is as fast and reliable as can be found anywhere in the UK. It really is second to none.

John Irvine continues, “The service will not only delight seafarers visiting Cowes Yacht Haven but is also flexible enough to cope with the peak demands during busy periods such as Cowes Week when the marina is home to hundreds of visiting boats”.

Customers at Cowes Yacht Haven have been testing the new network over the past week and have seen a huge improvement in speeds and coverage.

I can’t believe what a fantastic summer we have ahead of us.

Team ProfileWe sat down with James Moody, deputy operations manager and Cowes Yacht Haven’s newest member of staff to find out a little more about him.

Q: What’s the best thing about working at Cowes Yacht Haven?

It’s the home of international sailing! I come from a long line of boat builders and sailors so there was no way I could turn down an opportunity to work in a marina that hosts events like Round the Island Race and Cowes Week.

My mother’s family has lived on the Island for some 300 years and I made the move over here from the mainland looking for a slower pace of life.

Q: Your family is very well known in the business.

I was the seventh generation of Moodys to work for AH Moody and Son Ltd. I started working for them when I was 17, learning my craft from the generations before me. I took on all sorts of roles over the years including yacht building, selling and marina management.

However, moving to the Isle of Wight has given me a chance to learn about a whole other side to my family. You can trace my mother’s family back through 300 years just in one graveyard over here.

Q: What is your day-to-day role like at Cowes Yacht Haven?

I oversee the operations in the marina and the boatyard, so I always keep on top of who is berthed with us, which boats are in dry sail and who has hired the crane and for how long, among other responsibilities. I have extensive experience of marina and boatyard management and have previously held the role of marina manager at Gunwharf Quays.

Q: Are you a keen sailor yourself?

Definitely. I’ve competed in races like the cross channel, the Hamble Winter Series and the Warsash Spring Series. I even came third in the Round the Island Race. I’m very excited to be here during Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week this year, although we’ll be so busy there will unfortunately be no competing for me.

Q: What makes Cowes Yacht Haven the premier marina on the Isle of Wight?

We’re situated right in the action so everything you could possibly need is either in the marina or at your finger tips on the High Street. We’re not kidding when we say it takes 30 seconds to get from pontoon to pub. Even if for some reason we don’t have what you need, you can guarantee our staff will try and sort it out for you.

Q: Tell me something we don’t know about you?

Everyone calls me Jim!

Fynn Marine

Don and June Hume established Fynn Marine five years ago as a brokerage online, selling RIBs

and yachts on the Island. After three successful years in the industry the team decided to set up in a physical location and chose Cowes Yacht Haven to be right in the centre of its target demographic. With chandlery product lines added to the mix, business flourished. The chandlery has since taken off and has kept the company rather busy throughout the years.

June Hume, said: “The busiest time of year for us is just after Christmas as everyone begins preparations to sail again. We sell a lot of anti-fouling between Christmas and Easter.”

Fynn Marine is popular in Cowes Yacht Haven due to its successful brokerage and the wide range of products available within the chandlery including International Paints, Lewmar fittings, and Kingfisher ropes. The chandlery is even able to match internet prices on International Paints and offers gift vouchers for any hard-to-buy-for seafarers. Fynn Marine’s next

plans include building a new website, available later this year, which will allow customers to buy their chandlery products online to order and collect. Fynn Marine is proactive in their approach to business and evolving all the time so watch this space.

Cold drinks and ice creams are also available from the chandlery, which is open seven days a week throughout the year.

Don has kept boats in Cowes for over 20 years and moved into Cowes eight years ago having lived on the Island for over 40 years.

It’s essential to check and maintain your rigging regularly. We recommend following these 10 steps to make sure you cover all the bases.

1 Wash entire rigging in hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly.

2 Check the gooseneck by making sure all the fittings are securely fastened and do not move around. The gooseneck pins shouldn’t be bent and check for any corrosion on toggles.

3 Pack the toggles with nylon washers to discourage vertical movement and cover sharp edges of split pins with silicone.

4 Boom fittings of dissimilar metals should be kept separate using a joining paste.

5 Ensure that the mast foot is without movement, corrosion or cracks and check the T-bar that the mast sits on for any damage.

6 Make sure that your roller-furling gear is easy to use as if it is difficult it could end up unwinding a compression terminal, which could ultimately lead to the loss of a rig. Remove the salt with a hose and then apply dry silicone lubricant to keep it moving.

7 Ensure sheaves are running freely. Lubricate with hot water if not, and check axle pin for cracks and wear.

8 Inspect tangs and T-balls for corrosion and cracking where they connect to the mast. If you find a crack then something will be bearing where it shouldn’t be.

9 Undo all shackles and pull the pins to check for wear and tear. Tighten the shackle pins with a cable tie.

10 Look for broken wires, If there is more than one then replace that shroud immediately and the same shroud on the opposite side of the boat.

At 18, Natasha Lambert has already sailed around the Isle of Wight, crossed the channel, sailed over 500 miles to south Wales and has just been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. It’s an impressive list of achievements for any teenager, but Natasha helms her boat from her wheelchair, using a single tube.

Natasha, who keeps her boat at Cowes Yacht Haven, was born with athertoid cerebral palsy. It affects her speech, her ability to control her limbs and confines her to a wheelchair. Most boats adapted

to be accessible for people with disabilities use canting seats and hand controls, which Natasha cannot use. Desperate to move out of the passenger seat and control a boat herself, her father set to designing a sophisticated sip and puff system that Natasha now uses to control her Mini Transat, Miss Isle Too.

Not content with raising tens of thousands of pounds for charities such as the RNLI, Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and Isle of Wight Scope from her challenges in the past, Natasha is now focusing her efforts on launching her own charity, The Miss Isle School of Sip-Puff Sailing. The charity will give other people with similar disabilities a chance to get out on the water and enjoy sailing using sip and puff technology. Those benefitting from the charity will learn to sail on the same Artemis 20 as Natasha did, Miss Isle.

Natasha is hoping her latest challenge, a 230 mile journey from Cowes to London, will raise much needed funds and awareness for her new charity. Natasha set sail from Cowes Yacht Haven on 23 May, taking in Brighton, Eastbourne and Ramsgate before heading down the Thames to St. Katherine’s Docks. She arrived in London on 1 June, where she then swapped her boat for her walking aid. She walked the ‘Square Mile’ of the City of London, which is a challenge of a different kind, leaving Natasha to navigate the crowded pavements and traffic of the capital. Supported by her parents and younger sister, Rachel, Natasha carried on her fundraising efforts whilst walking, speaking to members of the public about her courageous challenge.

A very special coach, offshore solo sailor Nikki Curwen, joined Natasha for the first leg of this challenge. Nikki is due to sail solo across the Atlantic this September in the Mini Transat race, competing in a sailing boat very similar to Natasha’s Miss Isle Too. It was a fascinating experience for both Nikki and Natasha.

Nikki said: “I have known Natasha for a while and have always talked about sailing with her. This trip was a great experience and good fun. She puts a lot of pressure on herself but her determination is unreal, hats off to her.”

Nikki joined Natasha for first two days of her journey. After some tricky sailing, and frustrating motoring in light winds, the duo arrived in Brighton Marina 10 hours and 54 miles later. The

10 THE HAVEN

second day started with a small hiccup when electrical issues delayed their start but they eventually enjoyed a good but chilly sail to Eastbourne with the wind and tide in their favour.

Natasha said goodbye to Nikki on 25 May and the next day sailed on 46 miles towards Dover with a film crew on board documenting her progress. By 28 May Natasha was well on her way to London and headed down the Medway to Queenborough Harbour.

It was an early start for Natasha on 30 May leaving Queenborough Harbour at 5:30am to sail six hours

and 42 miles to Gallion Point Marina in London Docklands just before the tide turned. This

journey took her underneath the Dartford Bridge and a seal even accompanied her for some of the journey. As the team were ahead of schedule they opted to take a day off as bad weather blew through and instead started the final 15 miles on 1 June.

With a very special escort from RNLI Tower Lifeboat, Natasha made her way to

St. Katherine’s Docks to applause from the banks of the Thames past magnificent sights

like Tower Bridge and the O2 arena.

Jon Pridham, managing director of Cowes Yacht Haven, said: “Natasha is such an inspirational person. We’re so proud of her and her achievements. Cowes Yacht Haven and Cowes Waterfront Trust help her in anyway we can, including subsidising her berthing fees but now she needs your help to fund her charity sailing school.”

Catch a slice of history this summer

An 87 year old boat is making the journey from the Classic Boat Museum in East Cowes to its summer home, on the water at Cowes Yacht Haven.

Rosabelle, the sturdy motor launch used by Frank Beken, renowned marine photographer, has been given a free berth by the Cowes Waterfront Trust,

just in time for the Royal Yacht Squadron Bicentenary International Regatta (25-31 July).

Jon Pridham, managing director of Cowes Yacht Haven, said: “We were honoured to offer Rosabelle a free berth. The marina here has been a part of the Isle of Wight’s history for hundreds of years so it was only right to welcome another crucial part of the Island’s past to our marina.”

Frank Beken spent 20 years on Rosabelle taking photos of beautiful yachts and races, a skill that required exact timing. Throughout the 1920s and 30s Beken used the motor launch to get to the best viewpoint of all the races and regattas in the waters around the Isle of Wight.

When Frank’s photographer son, Keith, and grandson Ken donated Rosabelle to the Classic Boat Museum in 2004, she needed great repair and even had a small tree growing in the

bottom of the boat. Volunteers at the museum removed and replaced all the rotten wood and restored Rosabelle to her original glory in 2008, ready now to be displayed in Cowes Yacht Haven to the 130,000 visitors that pass through the marina every year.

The Classic Boat Museum plans to repeat history by taking Rosabelle out for the Royal Yacht Squadron Bicentenary Regatta, to be amongst the very same boats she helped Frank Beken photograph over 60 years ago.

Rosemary Joy, director of the Classic Boat Museum, said: “We’re so very grateful to the Cowes Waterfront Trust and Cowes Yacht Haven for providing a free berth for Rosabelle. The location will showcase the hard work of the Classic Boat Museum and display our Island’s nautical history to a whole new audience, as well as putting Rosabelle back amongst the boats that she belongs with.”

Yachtsmen from around the world come to see the historical photographs taken by Frank Beken on his specially designed maritime camera. Early photographs signed by Beken & Son have fetched £1,000 at auction. The award winning Classic Boat Museum was granted Arts Council Accredited Museum Status in 2013 for its high standards of professionalism and conservation.

Cowes Yacht Haven is proud to announce it has been selected as the latest member of TransEurope Marinas after a rigorous vetting programme. Cowes Yacht Haven is the first marina to be granted this status on the Isle of Wight and is the 30th in the UK.

The association of select European marinas offers reciprocal berthing

arrangements, meaning Cowes Yacht Haven annual berth-holders will now be able to enjoy a stay discounted by up to 50% in eight different countries at any of the 69 TransEurope marinas. Vice versa, berth-holders from across Europe will now also receive discounted stay at Cowes Yacht Haven.

The news is likely to attract TransEurope members looking for a ‘home away from home’ to the Isle of Wight, reassured that Cowes Yacht Haven has met all standards required.

Jon Pridham, managing director of Cowes Yacht Haven said:

“We are pleased to announce Cowes Yacht Haven is now a member of TransEurope marinas. We are very positive that this will benefit the Island

and its tourism greatly and offers a great opportunity for our berth-holders to explore other marinas around the continent.”

The TransEurope Marina Association seeks to provide a genuinely warm welcome to visiting yachtsmen and

women, a tradition Cowes Yacht Haven is keen to continue. Cowes Yacht Haven offers much more than a berthing station, with immediate access to local shops, pubs and restaurants of Cowes High Street and the rest of the Island’s attractions within easy reach. The marina is fully equipped with laundry, toilet and shower facilities as well as on site engineers, electricians and boat repairers. A recent dredging project resulted in Cowes Yacht Haven maintaining minimum depths of 3.5m even in low spring tides, allowing the marina to cater for small superyachts and large boats over the coming years.

for more details. While the Isle of Wight may be famous for its bustling sailing scene it is also fast becoming a foodie’s paradise.

The island is rich with local producers, creating everything from real ale and chocolate to

coffee beans and fudge. Increasing numbers of local cafes and restaurants are sourcing their food locally and Isle of Wight Farmers’ Markets are proving increasingly popular.

The Haven magazine caught up with one local producer, Richard Hodgson from the Isle of Wight Cheese Company, to find out what makes the Isle of Wight a great place to produce food.

Q: Have you always lived on the Isle of Wight?

I was born in Newcastle and my family moved here when I was a young child so I grew up here. The island is a brilliant place to live; it’s easy to see why it attracts so many holiday makers.

Q: What made you start up the Isle of Wight cheese company?

It was quite a career change for me…I was a television editor before! While

it might sound glamorous the reality is you’re sat in a dark room in front of a computer all day so when the opportunity arose to set up The Isle of Wight Cheese Company I jumped at it.

Q: Was it a steep learning curve?

Definitely! I’d never set foot on a farm before! I enrolled in agricultural courses to learn about cheese making and enlisted the help of my mum, who had run a successful hotel business on the island for many years. It didn’t take long to get into the swing of it.

Q: Where does your cheese come from?

I work with a farmer who has a small Guernsey dairy herd in Queen Bower. I work closely with the farmer to give him a fair price and I think consumers care about that too so that’s the kind of deal we have.

Q: Where is your favourite place to eat?

The Taveners in Godshill is always worth a visit and the Yarbridge near Sandown is good too. They do a great lasagne!

Local Food Spotlight Isle of Wight Cheese Company

Q: Where are the best places for foodie sailors to visit when they come to the island?

There are some lots of farm shops selling tasty local produce. Farmer Jacks in Arreton is popular, as is Briddlesford Farm Shop near Wootton. There are farmers’ markets too – one at St Thomas’ Square in Newport on a Friday and another at Anglesea Street in Ryde every Saturday.

For ‘foodie tourists’ there are a few places to visit including the Garlic Farm, which does garlic bread making workshops. Also The Cow Co. at Tapnell Farm in Yarmouth is a great restaurant with a whole load of learning experiences about the beef and dairy industries.
