Randall Middle School Bridge Design Team Needs Your HelpMichael Oliver

Randall Middle School students would like to participate in the Selmon Expressway Bridge Design Competition on February 23, 2013 at the University of South Florida. Randall’s Bridge Design Team will be composed of eighteen students. These eighteen students will be divided into six groups of three. The students will learn how to design bridges through lessons taught by Mr. Joiner (team coordinator) and an engineer who is willing to volunteer his time. The Randall Building Design Team will meet biweekly at 8AM, starting the week of January 7, 2013. During these

meetings, students will gain hands on experience, practice designing bridges, learn to work as a team, and learn to develop problem solving strategies. As a result, the design team members will enhance their abilities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.).

The Randall Building Design Team needs $400 to purchase six reusable kits, balsa wood, and glue. In addition, the team needs volunteer engineers to help the students train for the Selmon Expressway Bridge Design Competition.

All sponsors of the Randall Middle School Bridge Design Team will be printed on the back of the design team’s shirts. Also, the sponsors will be featured in Randall’s monthly newsletter. If you would like to sponsor Randall Middle School’s Bridge Design Team, please call Randall Middle School at 813-740-3900, or contact Mr. Joiner at [email protected], or Mr. Oliver at [email protected].

Fundraising UpdateJill Rintoul

The Fundraising Committee has been hard at work this past month and the nice rest over the holidays was long overdue! I want to thank all those that have helped out the last month with MIXED BAGS and Reindeer-Grams. We would not have been a success without our volunteers.

Our MIXED BAGS fundraiser netted over $5,500 for our Randall PTSA. The bags were cute and we hope will be enjoyed by all. The Reindeer-Grams total will be reported next month, but by the look of the lines of students buying them I know they were a success!

Happy New Year from Box Tops for EducationShannon Derby

We ended 2012 strong with a total count of 13,900 Box Tops submitted from Randall. That means our school earned $1,390 just from clip-ping and submitting Box Tops. Thank you parents, teachers, and students. Congratulations to Ms. Rupe's Homeroom class. They were the November Box Top winners with a count of 542! As you begin your clipping in this new year, please remember to check for expiration dates. The next date we mail in the Box Tops is April 1st. That means that the Box Tops have to expire after 4/1/13. Remember, we are no longer participating in the Campbell's Labels for Education or Tyson Project A+. Please save those labels for another school.

Above: Students in Mrs. Verdi’s 7th period class collect all recyclable materials every Friday. Randall is currently ranked 37th in recycling in Hillsborough County. Our goal is to be number one. Please encourage everyone to recycle.

Staff Appreciation is so SweetDonnal Blattel

Hope everyone had a relaxing holiday season and enjoyed their winter break from school and all its activites! The Staff Appreciation Committee treated our Teachers and Staff to a Candy and Dessert Bar on Thursday, December 20th for their Holiday Gift. They enjoyed filling bags and snacking on a little dessert during their lunch. The next Conference night dinner is in February so be on the lookout for in-formation coming soon. We welcome anyone that would like to donate items, cook their favorite recipes or help set up to be a part of the committee. Please contact Donna Blattel at [email protected] or Jennifer Abdoney [email protected] for more infor-mation or any questions.

Counselor’s CornerMelissa Miller, 6th Grade Counselor

Wow, we are halfway through this school year! Here are important dates and information for you to be aware of:

1. The 6th graders chose their elective for the second semester through their wheel classes.2. The following classes won for the highest percentage of returned, signed anti-bullying pledges: Ms. Nixon for 6th grade, Ms. Martinez for 7th grade, Ms. Thompson for 8th grade and Ms. Eftink for multi-level class. Ms. Miller gave all students and teachers treats as a reward.3. Our Character Education Day for December was on the 10th and the focus was on being reliable for 6th grade, being thankful for 7th grade and being honest for 8th grade.4. Ms. Miller did guidance lessons in all the 6th grade history classes so the students could start to think in depth about possible future careers and budgeting their money after moving out on their own. There were lots of great discussions and activities.5. The Geography Bee was held on 12/19, and Ms. Miller and Ms. Richards were part of the judging team. Ms. Homan did a wonderful job organizing it. The winner at Randall will go to the state competition, and out of the past five years, four Randall students went to the state competition which means they were in the top 100 students in Florida. The winner of Florida goes to Washington, DC to be in the competition hosted by Alex Trebek. This year’s winner for Randall is Max Li, an 8th grader who also won in 6th grade...way to go!6. Students should remember to wear Randall shirts/colors and/or college shirts on Fridays to show school spirit and earn extra Hawk Bucks.7. There was an anti-bullying presentation held by the Derrick Brooks Foundation on 12/21, and teachers voluntari-ly took their students. Mr. Oliver, Prevention Specialist, set this up.8. Edline will be updated on 1/10 and 1/24, so please be sure to check that regularly.9. Newsome High School counselors and staff will be here to meet with 8th graders on 1/7 so they can pick their classes for next year. Please contact Ms. Richards for more information.10. The Extended Learning Program ends on 1/14, and semester exams are held during that week.11. There will be a parent night held on 1/17 at Randall for 6th and 7th grade students and their families from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Ms. Roberts and Ms. Miller will explain the procedures for these students picking their classes for the next school year which will begin 1/23. Please contact them for more information.12. Be sure to check out the guidance bulletin board by the media center showing all the different colleges that our faculty has graduated from.

The guidance department looks forward to a successful second half of the year, and please feel free to contact us whenever needed.
