Youth Council Orientation 2015
August 22, 9:00am4:00pm
Group building, goal setting, planning for the 20152016 year.
Youth will gather at Heartland Center in Parkville, with the Youth Counciladults. Returning members and new members of the council will be welcomed. There will be leadership development in the form of study, games, and groupbuilding. An arrival snack will be provided at 8:50 a.m., and lunch will be served. Therewill be an afternoon snack. The day will conclude at 4:00 p.m.The cost will be $10, which will cover all food and activities of the day.Attendance at this event is required for all youth council participants.

The Guatemala Partnership Committee has invited two women fromMaya Quiché Presbytery to visit Heartland, September 18th29th. TheRev. Filomena Mejía is the first woman to be ordained in that presbytery,and Heartland funds have so far made it possible for her to advancefrom second to ninthgrade in her secular education and to completethree years of lowerlevel seminary studies. Gladys Poroj, a physicaltherapist by training, is active with the presbytery's Young Adults groupand plays drums in a praise band. Time slots are available for one orboth of the women to meet with a group or groups from your church orcommunity; translation will be provided. Heartland 180 ‐ serving disadvantaged youth in Wyandotte County ‐ is in needof support with providing transportation for the middle school and high school youthparticipants of the 180 Degrees After‐School Program. The peak times we needtransportation from school locations (USD500 School District) to the 180 DegreesProgram site location (Northwest Middle School) are as follows:
Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays | 2:30pm ‐ 3:00pm (pick‐up) & 6:30pm ‐ 7:00pm(drop‐off)Wednesdays (early release day) | Noon ‐ 12:30pm (pick‐up) & 3:30pm ‐ 4:00pm(drop‐off) The start date of the 180 Degrees After‐School Program is August and will meetthroughout the academic school year. Heartland 180 has insurance coverage that allows volunteers to use their ownvehicles to provide transportation. Mileage is reimbursable. A brand new book cowritten by Paul Rock and Bill Tammeus, is soon to bereleased by Westminster John Knox Press. It's a short book for small groupor individual study with questions at the end of each chapter. It highlights theways Pope Francis' focus on Jesus, and ministering to those on the margins,has opened the door for Catholics and Protestants to reengage in Christ'smission. The release will coincide with the Pope's visit to the United States inSeptember and could make for a relevant small group or Sunday School fallstudy.
