The Helping Hands
-a quarterly official publication of the Ohio State Socie-ty of Medical Assistants
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Greetings, OSSMA. As the Summer comes to a close, I wanted to remind you all of the great opportunities for continuing education coming up this Fall. In the next few pages of this issue of the Helping Hands you will see a number of ses-sions scheduled throughout Ohio. The West Central Chapter will be offering the 8th Annual Pediatric Collabo-
rative Colloquium on October 19th at St. Rita’s Hospital in Li-ma. This event will provide 4 CEUs.
Cuyahoga County Chapter will be offering a 3 CEU event on No-vember 9th near Cleveland. More information will be available soon on our website.
The Tri County Chapter will be holding our Fall board meeting and education session on Novem-ber 2nd. This event will provide up to 5 ESUs. As always, our board meetings are open to visi-tors and we especially welcome any OSSMA member that would like to become more involved.
For those of us that have been around a while, we know just how valuable our continuing education opportuni-ties are. We invite any medical assis-tants to join us and celebrate the value we add to the medical community. As always, I’m just an email or phone call away. Drop me a line if you have any questions or suggestions for the OSSMA. Enjoy what remains of Summer and I hope to see you at one of our continuing education events soon. Judy

Cure-all remedies have been around for hun-dreds of years. From the traveling medicines shows of the 19th century, to the “juice cleans-es” from today, patients suffering from chronic health conditions have been tempted to try anything they can to get relief.
A recent warning from the FDA targets a newer “miracle cure,” known as MMS, or Miracle Mineral Solution. Widely touted on social me-dia as being a cure-all for diseases such as HIV and hepatitis, MMS has not been cleared by the FDA.
An excerpt from the FDA news release states, “The FDA’s drug approval process ensures that patients receive safe and effective drug prod-ucts. Miracle Mineral Solution and similar products are not FDA-approved, and ingesting these products is the same as drinking bleach. Consumers should not use these products, and parents should not give these products to their children for any reason,” said FDA Acting Com-missioner Ned Sharpless, M.D. “The FDA will continue to track those selling this dangerous product and take appropriate enforcement actions against those who attempt to evade FDA regulations and market unapproved and potentially dangerous products to the Ameri-can public. Our top priority is to protect the public from products that place their health at risk, and we will send a strong and clear mes-sage that these products have the potential to cause serious harm.”
The powder concoction has a sodium chlorite base. The instructions for the product’s recon-stitution suggests mixing the powder with an acidic substance such as lemon or lime juice.
When the patient mixes these two components together, a bleach solution is formed.
The warning goes on to say, “The FDA recently received new reports of people experiencing severe vomiting, severe diarrhea, life-threatening low blood pressure caused by de-hydration and acute liver failure after drinking these products. The FDA is not aware of any scientific evidence supporting the safety or effectiveness of MMS products, despite claims that the solution is an antimicrobial, antiviral and antibacterial. The FDA encourages con-sumers to talk to a health care professional
about treating medical conditions or diseases. Consumers who have experienced an adverse health effect after ingesting this product should seek immediate medical attention. Anyone who has experienced an adverse health effect that may be related to MMS should report it through the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information program as soon as possible at 800-FDA-1088 or www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm.

“LEADERSHIP IS THE ABILITY TO GET EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT FROM ORDINARY PEOPLE.” – BRIAN TRACY
The OSSMA has created the Leadership Committee. This has been developed as a committee of Past Presidents to provide leadership training and guidance to those mem-bers volunteering to hold an office or committee chair at the OSSMA state or local level. This committee also serves to be a path of mentoring for those holding office, as well as future potential officers. All current BOT Officers/District Counselors, Chapter Presidents/Vice Presidents, or any other members interested where encouraged to at-tend this informative session. There were 29 attendees to this years training. The Leadership Committee held a Leadership training at the July 27, 2019 OSSMA Summer Board Meeting held in Gahanna, Ohio. The agenda included review of the responsibilities of the OSSMA officers, district councilors and committee chairs. Also reviewed was the importance of report formats and meeting deadlines. The Strategic Plan was reviewed and discussion on how the Strategic Plan guides Committee Chairs in their goals and committee projects/work. One CEU was offered with Don Balasa, JD, MBA, CEO/Legal counsel of the AAMA presenting: The Significance of Bylaws.
