PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It was a virtual flower garden at the April Paint-in with Lori Hill-stead. Everyone seemed to enjoy the project. That day was our scheduled raffle month and, with so many donations, we made almost $400. Thanks to everyone who helped out by giving back to our chapter.

We also had some of the last wood pieces of Sue Bond’s, and sev-eral were sold. Marilyn will continue to bring anything she has and will forward the money to Sue at her new home. I just want to express how grateful I am to Sue for all her many years of par-ticipation and leadership for our chapter. The facility we have is amazing and Sue was responsible for getting us this venue. How-ever, no worries, my daughter’s father-in-law has secured it for our continued use.

May is almost upon us and I look forward to Bobbie’s class. She is so knowledgeable and such a great teacher. We have a few spots left so don’t miss out on this great opportunity to paint with a truly remarkable painter. I love the piece chosen and can’t wait to get started.

Once again Charlotte and Ramona have stepped up and volun-teered to plan next years MPI. I’m sure it will be wonderful, and I really appreciate their continued participation in chapter. We still have not had anyone volunteer for the Christmas party so until someone does, (and I hope someone will) I need 5 table center-pieces donated. If no one comes on board, having the tables done will be a huge help, so let me know if you can help with a table.

I also want to thank Jeanne Robert (again) for pulling together Ways and Means this year. In addition to her marvelous Sunshine monthly birthday write-up she agreed to help out with Ways and Means too.

I’m very excited to be going to National Convention, I guess I chose the best year as it will be the last. If anyone else is attending, be sure to find me, I would love to get a few pictures for the news-letter.

NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs) April class: How fun was it to have Lori as our teacher showing us how to paint this beautiful project. We did it !! - they all looked gorgeous! The day started with the brisk sale of raffle tickets since this was our spring raffle month. We had some terrific and enticing goodies to choose from. A huge thank you to whom donated to support our chapter and to the members who purchased tickets. Susan Schoeppner and Cheryl Powell won the free class donated by Programs. Congrats! Lori helped us paint the hibiscus using Deco Art paints layering color upon color until wha-la…. It’s a flower! Lori also gave us a terrific demo on how to attach the gold leafing to the edges of the project. Candy coordinated lunch to feed a hungry crowd including desserts. We had two guests take the class who decided to become members of our chapter- Carol Dombrosky and Lucinda Aranda. Linda E. and Leslie men-tored them on our chapter painting day routine to make their first day with us welcoming.

May 11th class: Sea Horse Rides Bobbie is teaching an exciting underwater picture “Sea Horse Rides”. This is a class that gives us an opportunity to learn color theory and painting techniques. I love all the little creatures in this picture and who knows how to paint a sea horse? Pick the sur-face of your choice for this piece. Paints used are Jo Sonja. We offer many sizes of the design patterns depending on your plate or project piece size. Patterns available

June 8th class: Os Pencil Box Onya will give us a chance to work on our Os Rosemaling skills with this flower pencil box. The flowers and leaves look com-plicated to paint but Onya guides us step by step layer after layer to make them look fabulous. This is such a colorful box, you will want to add it to your home office décor. Paints used are Jo Sonja and Background colors. Patterns available

July 20 class: Rosemary West Can What an opportunity to paint a Rosemary West pattern for our July class. Ramona has it displayed on a watering can that would look terrific on a patio or in your home or you can adapt this pattern to use the surface of your choice. Paints used are Jo Sonja acrylic. Don’t forget this class is the 3rd Saturday weekend in July. Patterns available

August 10 class: Sunflower We are taking signups for the September class. We have a new teacher (to PHP) coming from Hesperia- Janet Mitchell. This project is painted using acrylic paint but done on watercolor pa-per. Sign up for the class- get the watercolor paper free. We have a notebook showing illus-trations of the prep work and also the project piece is on display for you to view at the monthly paint ins. Part of the background is stamped on (all done in class). The teacher has a limited number of stamps so if you have one in your stash that you would like to use, please bring it to class. Patterns available

The two zodiac signs associated with the month of May are Taurus and Gemini. Individuals born from May 1st to May 20th are members of the Taurus sign. The practical Taurus can be recognized by their earthy and realistic ways of living. For those born from May 21st to May 31st, they are members of the Gemini sign. The zodiac sign being a bull reveals a few things right off the bat: Tauruses are known for being unwavering, strong-willed, and steadfast in their opinions. And if you're a Taurus, then you've probably come to terms with being known for your stubbornness, a common attribute for the sign. The Gemini personality is very fun, but, like every sign, Geminis have weaknesses. Their strengths are that they’re adaptable, outgoing, and intelligent—there's never a dull moment with a Gemini. However, their weaknesses are that they're indecisive, impulsive, unreliable, and nosy—be careful telling a Gemini your deepest darkest secrets.

The birthstone for May is Emerald.

Both Linda Silvasy and Cindy Smith were born May 3 as was Franki Valli (who will be 84!!), Bing Crosby and Golda Meir.

Carol Ganzi was born May 4 as was Audrey Hepburn and Randy Travis.

Arla Lucas was born May 17 as was Bob Saget, Derek Hough and PiinkSparkles (a YouTube star!).

Marilyn Dixon was born May 21 as was Mr. T and a few other people I’ve never heard of!

Linda Martin was born May 22 as was Naomi Campbell, model.

Jan Johnson was born May 23 as was Joan Collins, Drew Carey and Rosemary Clooney, singer, actress and aunt of George.

Linda Camp was born May 28 as was actress Carroll Baker, nominated for an Oscar for her role in Baby Doll (1956)

If you remember nothing else from this article, remember that Mother's Day is Sunday, May 12. Go ahead and buy the card now or remind your husband/children to buy the card. Once that’s taken care of, here are 17 much wackier holi-days to keep it fun this month. A lovely relic of our best years in the U.S.—the McCarthy Era. As communism gained popularity worldwide during the 1920s, the holiday of Labour Day, or May Day, on May 1st became closely tied to it. To combat the threat of the proletariat, it was proposed May 1st could also be a holiday for Americans to reaffirm their commitment to their homeland. Congress made it official in 1958, and former President Eisenhower made it for-mal by decreeing May 1st, 1959 an official holiday. It has since been honored annually by every subsequent President.

May 3 is Hug Your Cat Day. If anyone needs one to hug, contact Charlene Butler.

May 4 is Star Wars Day. May the fourth be with you!

For many in the US, the 5th of May in Spanish justifies a 5th shot of tequila. Cinco de Mayo actually holds its roots in the Mexican state of Puebla. It commemorates the Mexican army defeating the better-equipped French army occupying their land at the time. As far as the addition of excessive drinking as part of the holiday, all signs point to America as the culprit.

May 9 is National Lost Sock Memorial Day.

May 13 is Frog Jumping Day.

May 17 is National Pack Rat Day.

May 23 is Lucky Penny Day. Just be sure Abraham Lincoln’s face is staring up at you before you pick it up!

May 26 is Sally Ride Day to honor the first American woman in space.

May 29 is the End of the Middle Ages Day.

Today in 1453, the official Middle Ages

ended—allegedly. The conclusion of one era ushered in the Renaissance, and other subse-

quent influential periods in European histo-

ry. You gave us Arthurian lore, you gave us a plague of Bubonic proportions, and you

gave us Game of Thrones. For that— mostly

the last part—we thank you.

Ways and Means 2019

It’s that time of year again when chapter asks ALL members to participate in our largest fundraiser, Ways and Means. This year we have three very different and beautiful donations that are sure to encourage you to purchase tickets. Each member will receive 20 tickets, place your name on them and either send them to me, or bring them to a paint-in to place in the bag for the item you wish to have. The drawing will be at the October paint-in and you need not be present to win. Below are pictures of the items donated.

Water color painted by Alden Avery, donated by Merle Avery

Ornament box painted and donated by Sandy Garcia, we are also asking for members to bring an ornament

to place in the box, what a treat!

Four season box/stool, a Heidi England design painted by Cynthia Megill, includes a cushion

You may send your signed tickets to me if you cannot come to a paint-in, or if you would prefer, you may make a $20 donation in lieu of tickets. If you have any questions let me know. Jeanne Robert 3691 Ashford St. San Diego, Ca 92111
