months off so we are excited to begin our suppers of good food and fellowship.

Pastor’s Pen

In one of my school readings, Resurrecting Excellence by Greg Jones and Kevin Armstrong, there

is a story told of two American missionaries to Liberia (told on pages 175-6). United Methodist

Bishop David Lawson was sent there in 1986 to assist pastors (and their bishop) who had been put

in jail during the civil war there. While travelling, he was taken to a remote area where there was a

simple, concrete box.

He was told the story of the Fadleys, American seminary graduates who had been sent to Liberia as

missionaries. He was an agriculturalist, while she was a teacher. Between teaching crop growing

and starting schools, they fell in love with the people – and the people fell in love with them.

All was well, until the wife began to grow weak. Doctors were unable to discern a cause, and they

suggested that the couple return home for tests. But there was too much going on: crops to plant,

schools to start, congregations developing. Liberia had become their heart.

In time, Mrs. Fadley grew so weak that travel was impossible. She asked her husband for one last

favor: “We’ve loved these people. What we’ve been doing is beautiful and important. Our hearts

belong here. When I die you can ship my body home. My parents would want that. But first I want

you to ask the surgeons to remove my heart. I want my heart here.”

Are there any people, is there any land, where your life within the life, death and resurrection of

Jesus Christ would lead you to bury your heart? Where does love place you forever?

Pray through this story. May the embers of our lives be fanned once again by the Spirit into flames

of love.
