EDITORIAL Our Goal.

The Journal of November, 1937, began with a discussion of our goal. That goal was then described as the complete revision of the genealogies of the eight lines of the More family by 1940, when the John More Association is to celebrate the half century of its existence. In the Journal of 1936 the first step was taken toward this goal by the publication of a revision of the David line. It is a source of gratification to be able to offer in this number a revision of the Jonas line, and a revision of the Edward L . Line.

What Is a Revision?

Perhaps it should be explained at this point what is meant by a complete revision of the genealogies. In the More History, published in 1893, these genealogies were given down to the year of publication. The work of keeping them brought down to date has been attempted in the More Journal, and in the main successfully attempted. But reports in the Journal have never been absolutely complete. The consequence is that, when one sets out to add to the genealogies as given in the History the new material contained in the Journal, there are still many gaps in th*-. record, because many births, marriages and deaths have never been reported. One who attempts to revise any given genealogy finds at once that some families have for years not been heard from; that the Journal has not reached some families because there is no correct address available; or that families receiving the Journal have failed to make reports. Revision, then, involves the possession of a copy of the History, a complete file of the Journal, but still more it involves patient and persistent correspondence and a degree of skill in detective work.

The Jonas Line.

The revision of the Jonas line, now published on pages 207-217, is the work of Cousin Carrie E . More of Roxbury, N . Y. , for fifteen years secretary of the John More Association and for all her life a ready and effective worker for our family. It will be noted that the revision as here printed is not at every point complete. Even so, it has seemed wise to print it now, in the hope that the act of publication may enlist new interest and so insure the supply of the information lacking.

The Edward L . Line. The revision of the Edward L. line is

the work of Cousin Harold Knickerbocker Van Alen, of Champion, Mich. From his northern look-out post in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan he has surveyed the field

and brought the record down to the present time. Here, also, there are some gaps that need to be filled, because letters have not been answered, or because addresses are not known. It is confidently expected that the publication of the results of his work will enlist interest and so lead to the desired result.

Harold Knickerbocker Van Alen.

Our cousin who has taken the responsibility for the Edward L. line deserves a special introduction to the More family. He is a great-grandson of Edward L . More, a grandson of John Stanley More, and a son of Fannie More, who was married to Benjamin T. Van Alen, for many years an honored citizen of Jersey City, N . J . Harold K. Van Alen is the youngest of their three children. He holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Officers' Reserve Corps, having passed through all the grades of the service from that of private in the First Regiment of the National Guard of Illinois. He served with distinction on the Mexican border for six and one-half months in 1916, and on Apri l 1, 1917, was called into the United States service. At the close of the war he accepted a commission as Captain, Infantry,

in the Officers' Reserve Corps, and has remained active as a reserve officer ever since. He has an interest in several lines of genealogy which converge in him, and during the past months he has prosecuted a vigorous search for the widely-scattered members of the Edward L. line, and with notable success.

This introduction may properly end with an editorial note, first of apology for having referred in the last Journal to Cousin Harold as Howard. Be it said once for all, his name is Harold. And further, it has been a delight to have had such energetic and competent co-operation as Cousin Harold has furnished in the work of keeping the records of the More family. His frequent letters, his knack of finding clues, his patience, perseverance and thoroughness, have been an inspiration.

Thanks to Mrs. Kenyon.

In the work of compiling the genealogy of the Edward L. line, the readiness with which Mrs. Mabel Watrous Kenyon has furnished assistance has earned the thanks of Mr. Van Alen, and he has asked for this opportunity to express his appreciation. Mrs. Kenyon has a wide personal acquaintance with the members of her line, particularly with those who have continued to live in New York State. She has been prompt in answering inquiries and helpful in offering suggestions. Much credit is due to her for helping to bring the revised genealogy of the Edward L. line so far along toward completion.

Now that three of the lines have had revision, a forward look is in order, to see what may be expected from the remaining five.

The John T. Line.

Cousin Clark More, 116 South Elmwood Drive, Aurora, 111., has undertaken this task. He has at hand a copy of the History, and a complete file of the Journal. He is now engaged in the most difficult part of his work, that of getting information by correspondence.

The Robert Line.

Under date of September 27, 1937, Cousin Charles Church More, 4545 Fif th Avenue, N . E. , Seattle, Washington, wrote: "I will be glad to work up the Robert line as suggested." Cousin Charles has been burdened with a heavy load of professional duties, but hopes soon to be able to resume his activities for the John More Association.

The Alexander T. Line.

Cousin Fannie Clark Spear, 21 Park

Street, Barre, Vermont, is in charge of the revision of the Alexander T. line, and has organized a corps of helpers who are taking, each one, a branch of the line. Some part of the work is now complete, and the final revision may be expected in 1939.

The Jean Line.

A considerable amount of material about the Jean line, collected by our late cousin, Nellie Preston Edsall, was published in the Journal of 1936. Cousin Mary Riley Terry, 1209 West Colvin Street, Syracuse, N . Y. , is at work on one branch of the Jean line. In general, the field is large and the laborers are few. Volunteers are more sorely needed here than anywhere else.

The James Line.

Cousin Ethel Hunt Talman, Room 709, 25 Beaver Street, New York, N . Y . , has accepted responsibility for the James line, and is of good courage, in spite of her many unanswered letters.

Our Mailing List.

Last November, forty-three copies of the More Journal were returned to the post office in Walton because the addresses were faulty. Of this number, twenty-seven have been accounted for, while sixteen remain uncorrected.

Letters have been written seeking the needed information, and some responses have been received, while others are awaited. It seems wise, nevertheless, to print here all the addresses that are at present faulty:

Florence L . Boyer, 513,(13)3; Mrs. Nathan R. Graves, m311,21, and Nathan H . Graves, 311,212; Powell M. Grant, 141,2; Mrs. Mildred Brewster Gutshall, 3(12) 1 3 :

Earl Philip Guy, 284,13; Mrs. Lenora Kenyon, 513,22; Edgar Leonard, 513,(13)8: Mrs Florence B. Lube, 3(13)1,2; Mrs. Daurice Graves Pier, 311,21; Miss Marie Maples Preston, 564,1; Robert Duncan Sin-

671,2; Gilbert S. Slade, 671,21; Mrs. Bes-f j * Greenman Sullivan, 614,32; Jonas More Tompkins, 5(10)2,2.

Of the addresses that were listed on page 170 of the last Journal as faulty only two have been corrected: Wallace Bluce Smith and Robert Amasa Smith Information about this family will be found under 552 in News of the Clan.

This entire article about the mailing list is an appeal for help. If any reader can correct any of these addresses, please send

information to the secretary, Edward Fitch Clinton, N . Y. , or to the assistant secretary Mrs. Margaret More White, Walton, N . Y .

The Seacords.

Since the Seacords, all going back to Maria More, daughter of Edward L . More, and wife of James M. Seacord, are an important unit of the More family, it is a matter of interest to know that a history of the Seacord family is being prepared, which will, in time, find it convenient to refer to the family records assembled in the More History and in the Journal. Arthur W. Seacord (857,1), professor of English in the University of Illinois, has recently written, in answer to an inquiry by Harold K. Van Alen, as follows:

"The man working on the Seacord history is Professor Henry David Gray of Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, but his article, 'Early History of the Si-card-Secor Family' in the N . Y. Geneological & Biographical Record, LXVIII (Oct. 1937), No. 4, pp. 313-323, comes only down to the late eighteenth century, that is, not clear down to the Revolutionary War. Professor Gray comes of the Canadian

branch spelled Secord. Our Seacords connect somewhere to this Hugenot family stemming from old Ambrose Sicard, but I've never discovered where. Mr. Morgan H . Seacord of New Rochelle, N . Y. , knows most about that."

Our Pictures.

Harold K. Van Alen is known by his good works and will, it is hoped, become personally known to those who attend the reunion of 1940.

To those who have attended the reunions in Roxbury, the faces of the two brothers, Luzerne and Frederick V. Coville, will be a welcome reminder of two steadfast friends of our Association.

The cut of Anna Smith Keator, wife of Andrew F. Lutz, is made from a picture which is a favorite in the circle of her friends, and which shows her standing on the lawn before her home in Roxbury. An obituary notice of Mrs. Lutz was published in the Journal of 1936, p. 152.

EVENTS OF THE YEAR The John More Association, Incorporated.

The third annual meeting of the members and directors of the John More Association, Inc., was held in Roxbury, N . Y. , August 30, 1938. Nine of the sixteen members of the Association were present: Taylor and Fred More, Samuel J . Keator, Mrs. Helen Gould Shepard and Finley J . Shepard, Samuel More, Arthur F. Bouton and Andrew F . Lutz, John G. More. Miss Anna Palen and Mrs. Mabel Watrous Kenyon were also present by invitation of the president.

Taylor More, president of the corporation, referred to the death of Alfred T. Hunt, who was present at the last meeting, and it was ordered that a note be made in these minutes of the deep regret of the members because of his death, and of our appreciation of his loyal, active and whole-hearted support of the Association, incorporation, and their activities. Andrew F. Lutz and Taylor More were designated by unanimous vote to send a suitable expression of our loss to Adelaide D. Hunt, only daughter.

A report was received on the operation of the farm for the year past: 1. That the rental received had been $480; that disbursements for taxes had been $291.29, and for insurance, $37.90; leaving a balance of $150.81; 2. That, pursuant to the authorization at the last meeting, ten acres of the farm land had been sold to Mr. Tieschman for $300, and that the farm now consisted of 264 acres; and further, that necessary repairs to the property and miscellaneous expenses had

amounted to $245.93, leaving a balance of the principal sum of $54.07; so that the total cash balance on August 30, 1938, was $204.88.

A written report was received from Willis J . Lutz, tenant, showing how the farm land had been used during the past three years of his tenancy. The committee on management further reported that a new lease had been made with Willis J . Lutz for three years from October 1, 1938, to September 30, 1941, extending the present lease in substance, at the rental of $570 the first year, $630 the second year and $690 the third year.

The action of the committee in renewing the lease on these terms was duly ratified.

Notice was given of a proposed amendment to the by-laws, to be acted upon at the meeting in 1939, providing for a change of date of the annual meeting from August 30 to the last Saturday in August each year.

Harold K. Van Alen, of Champion, Mich., a member for the Edward L . line, presented his resignation because of the distance at which he resides. Mrs. Mabel Watrous Kenyon was elected to succeed him; also Miss Adelaide D. Hunt was elected a member for the James line, succeeding her father, now deceased.

The following were elected directors, one from each line: Taylor More, Samuel J . Keator, Finley J . Shepard, Samuel More, Andrew F. Lutz, Stoddard M . Stevens, Jr., John G. More, Stanley Coville.

The president reported that no contributions had been made to the Roxbury Cemetery Association, Inc., for the care of the

family plot where John and Betty are buried, and read a letter from Ralph F Ives, Esq., secretary of the Association, stating that the lot was about 2,000 square feet and that the reasonable payment for the care of the lot would be from $8 to $10 a year. Whereupon, Mr. Shepard moved that this corporation pay to the Cemetery Association the sum of $20 for the care of the lot for two years, 1937 and 1938. The motion was unanimously carried.

4.1. Mr. Andrew F. Lutz, secretary, reported that the assessment on the farm land and buildings for the present year is $8,500; and that the insurance carried is $15 500 which is the maximum amount that can be placed. He further reported an estimate made by Mr. Robert Doonan for supplying materials and building the new tenant house, building a spring house and providing pipes and laying the same for direct water supply, building cesspool and grading, as $7,900.

Before adjournment, the president called attention to the near approach of the fiftieth anniversary of the John More Association in 1940, and invited earnest and active co-operation in preparing for that important event.

After the adjournment of the meeting of o ™ m e m £ e r s ' t h e directors met at 12-45

A Tenant House on the More Farm.

A recent announcement by Taylor More president of the. John More Association,' inc., is of prime importance. It is to this effect, that the Association is now building a seven-room frame house on the John ThJVf-M™' f 0 / i h \ u s e o f t h e tenant n n t i W a

needs of the family which has the farm m charge. It will then be possible to use the stone house for such purposes as may seem to further the interests of the Association in the best way.

at Roxbury. Wednesday night and Thursday, September 21 and 22, were flood time. Six inches of water fell in three days, and four inches of it fell on Wednesday. A high wind blew and the village was without electric service from Wednesday night to Thursday noon. It was feared that Kirkside lake might go out and watchers were stationed there all Wednesday night, awaiting the emergency that did not arise. Thursday morning Kirkside Park was a swirling lake, and four rustic bridges were missing. At the John More farm, considerable damage was done, particularly to the bridge abutments, necessitating unexpected additional expense. Ihe high-water mark for the East Branch was raised by eighteen inches.

John More and the Turnpikes.

One of our allied members, Donald Mac-Pherson, m 422,12, supervisor of the Town of Stamford, N . Y. , recently addressed the Kiwanis Club of Walton, N . Y . , on the subject of early highways in Delaware County. His address, which was fully summarized in the Walton Reporter of September 30, 1938, casts much light on dark places, and is welcome reading to anyone who likes to reconstruct the past.

The first and most important of these roads, chartered by the state in 1800 as the Susquehanna turnpike and empowered to collect tolls, ran from Catskill to Wattles' ferry (Unadilla), and passed through Leeds, Cairo, Durham, Manorkill, Cones-ville, West Conesville, Gilboa, Stamford, Harpersfield, Kortright Center, Meredith, Treadwell, and Franklin to Unadilla. Milestones were set along this turnpike, each with an inscription giving the distance to Catskill. One who drives over the present highway from Franklin to Unadilla finds a half dozen of these old milestones which were recently recovered from surrounding fields and stone walls and reset in their places by the Franklin chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution.

The next turnpike which Mr. MacPher-son lists was chartered in 1802 and connected Moresville with the Susquehanna turnpike. It is thus described: "Schoharie K i l l Bridge company road, Cairo in Greene county to the house of John More in the town of Roxbury, and in 1810 from the house of John More to the junction with the Susquehanna turnpike near the house of John S. Bradford at South Gil-boa."

Still another, chartered in 1805, was the "Little Delaware turnpike, from Leal's, now Sherwood's, bridge near Delhi, to the house of Elisha B. Maynard in Bovina and from there in the nearest and most convenient route to the tavern of John More in Roxbury."

It appears, then, that the tavern of John More, though it was not on thè Susquehanna turnpike, was early connected with it, and was one of the focal points in the early road system of Delaware County.

James Bolard More.

James Bolard More, who has been in the consular service since 1931, has just completed three and one-half years of residence in Spain, most of the time under the trying conditions caused by the civil war. While on leave in this country in the summer of 1936, he was suddenly called back to his post by the outbreak of the war. He remained in Spain until August, 1938, when he left Barcelona for a sixty-day leave at home before proceeding to his new post at Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa.

After arriving in New York on September 1st he enjoyed two weeks of rest on the Massachusetts coast with his mother, Mrs. Louise Bolard More of Wellesley, Mass., who had the pleasure of seeing her three children together for the first time in three years. In these days, residence in the tropics involves a series of protective inoculations against various diseases, so that a leave of sixty days is not a time of unalloyed pleasure. Cousin Bolard sailed for England on October 26, to take a Liverpool steamer for Lagos. His term of service in Spain was longer than is usual for a vice consul. Conversely, the appointment to a tropical country will be shorter than usual, so that there is a fair probability that Cousin Bolard may be able to attend the More reunion of 1940.

Brandow-Wade.

In Sage Chapel, on the campus of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, at 4 P M. , August 20, 1938, occurred the marriage of Miss Adelaide Louise Wade, daughter of Lewis M . Wade of Worcester, New York, and the late Bessie Danella More, to Mr. George E . Brandow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brandow of Roxbury, New York.

The wedding ceremony was solemnized by Rev. A . D. Finch, Ithaca, New York, formerly pastor of the Worcester Methodist church, and, incidentally, the minister who baptized Mrs. Brandow in infancy.

Miss Mary lizabeth Wellington of Geneva, New York, a classmate of Mrs. Brandow, acted as bridesmaid. Mr. Bran-dow's best man was Mr. Wilson Bell, a native of Virginia.

The wedding was a simple and unostentatious event, with only a few of the close friends and relatives of the couple in attendance. Immediately following the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Brandow left by

automobile for a honeymoon in northern New York. After September first, they will be at home to their friends in a furnished apartment at 240 Linden Avenue, Ithaca, New York.

Mrs. Brandow was graduated from Worcester Central School in 1932, and from the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University in 1936. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. For the past two years she has assisted on the office staff at Cornell in the department of Agricultural Economics.

Mr. Brandow is a graduate of Roxbury high school and of the College of Agriculture at Cornell University in the class of 1935. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and of Ho-Nun-De-Kah, senior honorary society. He is at present a graduate student in prices and statistics under the Westinghouse Economic Fellowship.

Ives-Allaben.

A wedding, all in the More family, took place on November 28, 1937. The principals were two cousins who had parts in the reunion program of 1935. Charles K. Ives will be remembered as the ready toastmaster at the family luncheon. Ruth Mary Allaben sang on Sunday evening, and again at the parade of the brides, on Tuesday evening. The bride and groom are fourth cousins, and the bride has also the distinction of belonging to the Jean line on her father's side and to the John T. line on her mother's side. The Roxbury correspondent of the Walton Reporter gave the following account of the wedding:

"Miss Ruth Mary Allaben, eldest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Allaben of Binghamton, was united in marriage to Charles Keator Ives, son of Attorney Ralph S. Ives of Roxbury, at the Allaben home in Binghamton Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Brauer of Binghamton before banked palms and chrysanthemums.

"Miss Allaben, attired in a rust colored velvet gown and juliet cap of pearls, was given away by her father. The couple was attended by Miss Betty More Allaben, youngest sister of the bride, who wore a peacock blue taffeta dress trimmed with dubonnet, and Frank L. Enderlin of Roxbury. Before the ceremony several violin selections were played by Miss Ann Allaben, sister of the bride, and the wedding march was played by Mis» Britton, a former teacher of the bride. Immediately following the ceremony lunch was served to thirty-five guests. The happy couple left at midnight for Philadelphia, where they will reside for the present. Mrs. Ives' going away dress was of burnt orange wool and she wore brown accessories with it.

"Mrs. Ives is a graduate of Binghamton high school and of Northwestern University and is an accomplished musician. She formerly broadcast from the Binghamton station and is now engaged in radio broadcasting in Philadelphia, Pa.

"Mr. Ives is a graduate of the Roxbury high school, Cornell University and is now a senior at the Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa. He is a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, was president of the junior class of the medical school and is now president of the senior class. He is nationally known because of his athletic ability. He was a member of the Cornell crew for three years and is one of the best swimmers in the country and has a large collection of medals which he has won at swimming meets."

The latest distinction in swimming was won in New York City on December 5, 1937, where he captured the 100-yard freestyle sprint at the initial open water carnival of the Metropolitan A. A . U . indoor season.

Campbell-Bouton.

Miss Marjorie Bouton, physiotherapist at the U. S. Army Hospital, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, was married on February 22, 1938, to James White Campbell, son of A. J. Campbell of Honolulu. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell reside in Hawaii. The following account of the wedding is from the Honolulu Star-Bulletin:

"The wedding was held in the garden of the Campbell home on Beretania Street, Honolulu, at twilight on Washington's birthday, which is spring in Hawaii, and an especially beautiful season there. The ceremony, which took place before an improvised altar of papyrus, maile leis, calla lilies and lighted tapers, was performed by the Rev. Henry P. Judd in the presence of about 70 guests. The young bride was gowned in an afternoon dress of beige with dubonnet accents. She wore a short white veil, and carried a spray of orchids. Her only attendant, Miss Myrna Nichols, wore a blue gown with a corsage of pink delphiniums. Mrs. A . J . Campbell, mother of the groom, was charming in a gown of white chiffon. A reception was held at the Campbell home after the ceremony.

"Immediately after the ceremony the couple talked by telephone with Mrs. Campbell's parents in Roxbury. Although the bridal pair were 6,000 miles away, Mr. and Mrs. Bouton could hear their voices very plainly. The conversation took place at 4:45 P. M. in Hawaii and 10:45 P. M . Roxbury time.

Woodruff-Cranston.

Miss Harriet Fitch Cranston, daughter of Dr. William J . Cranston and Anna Fitch, and great-granddaughter of Anna More, was married at the home of her parents in Kingston, N . Y . , on May 16, 1938, to William Eber Woodruff, son of Éber Blaine Woodruff and Helen Herron of Washington, D. C.

The officiating clergyman was Rev. R. Hawley Fitch of Proctor, Vermont, the bride's cousin.

The guests were the members of the immediate families. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore her mother's wedding gown of marquisette and lace. She carried a bouquet of white roses and was attended by Miss Jean M. Ful-larton of Bronxville, who wore flowered chiffon and carried talisman roses. John Moxon of Mountainside, N . J., acted as best man.

The house was decorated with spirea, l i lacs and evergreens. There were bouquets of roses on the tables.

After the wedding breakfast, Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff left for a week's stay at the Cranston farm near Walton. Their home is in Washington, D. C.

Mrs. Woodruff was graduated from Mt. Holyoke College in 1933, and received the master's degree from Brown University, where she was graduate assistant in the department of biology for two years. From 1935 to 1937 she was research assistant at the department of genetics of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, at Cold Spring Harbor, N. Y. Mr. Woodruff is a graduate of Dartmouth College in 1931, and is on the staff of the Washington Post.

Luzerne Coville.

Dr. (Addison) Luzerne Coville died June 23, 1938, in Arlington, Va., six years after his retirement from the practice of medicine in Ithaca, N . Y . He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice Perkins Coville, by his son, Perkins Coville, and by three grandchildren. The burial was in the cemetery at Oxford, N . Y. , the home of his boyhood.

Dr. Coville was born in Preston, Chenango County, N . Y. , August 16, 1865, but in 1869 removed with his parents to nearby Oxford. He was graduated in 1886 from Cornell University, having been an

editor of the Cornell Sun and the secretary of his class. After taking his medical course in New York, he served as interne in Bellevue Hospital, New York, and St. Mary's Hospital, Brooklyn. He then began the practice of medicine in Brooklyn. On June 23, 1896, he married Miss Alice Perkins of Oxford, in New York City.

Concerning Dr. Coville's career in Ithaca the July issue of the Cornell Alumni News says:

"For thirty-six years he practiced medicine in Ithaca, having attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, and practiced five years in Brooklyn. In 1898 he came back to Ithaca and became lecturer on Anatomy in the Medical College, and in 1900 was appointed lecturer in Surgery, but resigned to give aid in combating the typhoid epidemic of 1903. He had a wide practice among students, and for several years from 1914 his office was in Sheldon Court, on College Avenue. He served two terms as president of the Tompkins County Medical Society, was for thirty-

four years its delegate to the Medical Society of New York, and as president of the Tompkins County Tuberculosis Association was credited in large part with getting the state to build the present Biggs Memorial Hospital on West Hill."

Prominent among Dr. Coville's many interests was local history. He served for a time as city historian of Ithaca, and in 1931 he published a booklet of fifty pages in commemoration of the centennial of the Tornado Hook and Ladder Company, No 3. This work is also a brief history of Ithaca from the seventeenth century on, and shows a wide knowledge of local conditions in early times and a keen sense of how familiar scenes of today came to be what they now are. He was chairman of the Tompkins County George Washington Bicentennial Committee, and a member of the DeWitt Historical Society.

The years of his early manhood coincided with the beginnings of the John More Association. He attended the first reunion in Roxbury, was a member of the Permanent Committee from the beginning, and was zealous in searching out and recording the details of the early history. In an article, "Heredity," contributed to the More Journal of 1897, he sketches the scientific theories of heredity and applies them to the More family, raising the question at the end: "Are we decadent through late marriages?"

Dr. Coville had a special appreciation of Indian lore and could present sympathetically the noble side of Indian character. This ability was shown in his speech at the Campfire in 1915, when, impersonating Joseph Brant or Thayenda-negea, he offered a critique of civilized man by contrast with the simplicities of savage life. Those who heard the speech in the evening recalled what they had seen in the afternoon at the pageant, when, dressed in complete Indian attire, he enacted the visit of Joseph Brant to Har-persfield to warn his friend, John More, of impending danger. Once again, at the reunion of 1925, during the outing at the farm, he impersonated Brant, and for the benefit of the younger generation reviewed the whole family history, and gave among other things some account of the stone farm house.

Luzerne Coville was the son of one of the youngest children of the youngest son of John More. His mother, Lydia Smith More, daughter of Edward L . More, was born in the little red house that preceded the stone farm house. Her girlhood was lived on this farm and in the stone house where John More spent his last days. Lydia More had a retentive memory, and the family tradition which her son received from her lips is the most direct and authoritative that we of this generation have received. There is a special

value, therefore, in the talk which Dr. Coville gave at the reunion of 1920, when his hearers were in and around the house, listening as he gave a detailed description of the various rooms. The strength of the same family tradition appears in the tribute that the son paid to the mother after her death in 1904. It is a beautiful tribute, from which the closing words are here given (Journal, 1, 167-8) : "Through all the days of her childhood, her maidenhood, her young womanhood, the foster children, and sons and grandchildren call up only a blessed memory. Thrifts—holy and genial—the very spirit of unrest in doing, was in her body, soul and mind. Of such is made the foundation of nations—aye, mankind in the making."

The two Coville brothers, Luzerne and Fred, were stalwart and loyal members of the More family. It is indeed a severe loss that has come to our Association in the death of these two brothers in two succeeding years. The picture of Frederick V. Coville, distinguished scientist, whose obituary was published in the Journal of 1937, is here given with that of his older brother, Luzerne.

NEWS OF THE CLAN The following items concerning the mem

bers of the family are numbered according to the system used in the Permanent Record. This system is explained in the Journal for November, 1935, page 126. The same explanation is prefixed to the list of those in attendance at the reunions of 1910, 1915, 1920, 1925 and 1930. See Journals for 1912, 1916, 1921, 1925, 1930.

A good way to master the system is to read your own number backwards. For example: the number of our president, Taylor More, is 112,7. That means that he is the seventh child of the second child (Taylor), of the first child (John L . ) , of the first child (John T.), of John and Betty Taylor More.

Mrs. Margaret Christina (Miller) More, wife of Fred More of Hobart, N . Y. , died in Stamford, N . Y. , Apri l 10, 1938, as the result of a traffic accident. She was born in Bovina, N . Y . , January 12, 1871, the daughter of John I. and Eleanor Thompson Miller. She attended Delaware Academy, Delhi, N . Y. , and was married to Mr. More in Delhi on September 19, 1894. Their home was for a few years in Bloom-ville, N . Y. , where her husband was the agent for the Ulster and Delaware Railroad. Later they moved to Hobart, which has been the family home for many years. Besides the husband, two daughters survive: Eleanor, wife of Wallace H. Rich of Hobart, and Cornelia, wife of Aaron M . Sargent of San Francisco, Cal.; also three grandchildren: Mary Barbara and Wallace H. Rich, Jr., and Janice Elise Sargent.

Mrs. More was a devoted wife and mother, a dear friend and neighbor. While her home and family ever held first place in her life, her interests were many, and to church and various social organizations she gave that loyalty which was one of her outstanding traits.

The sympathy of the entire community which was extended to the bereaved family was mingled with a feeling of indignation shared by all who read of the accident. Mrs. More was crossing the street on her way to evening church service, when a reckless and half-drunken driver, proceeding at a high rate of speed, struck her and threw her about sixty feet along

a side street. She lived only a few hours, after being taken to the Stamford hospital.

More, retained an interest, was managed by him until it was sold in 1917. He was later engaged in dairy farming. One of his fellow-townsmen wrote concerning him:

"Mr. Pettegrew has been prominent in the political and business life of the community during his long residence here. He was president of the village board for several terms, was school director for many years and was supervisor of In-diantown township for several terms. A l though always fair and uprignt, lie was firm in his dealings and made an ideal public officer, serving with prudence and distinction. He was treasurer of the local Mutual Fire Insurance Company and was highly esteemed in that office.

"He was a life-long member of St. Jude's Episcopal church and was a member of the vestry not less than 37 years and was senior warden for 20 years. According to those who knew him, he was a real practicing Christian, who never made a display of his religion, but who followed its teachings through a long and useful life."

On November 12, 1890, he married Emma Frances More, daughter of Jonas H . More. Her death occurred September 16, 1937. Cousin Marion More is now the last of the family that has been prominently identified with Tiskilwa for many years.

J O H N MORE ASSOCIATION

The numbering system used has been repeatedly described in the Journal.

Cases have occurred where the birth of a child was not reported until after the normal number had been used for a younger member of the family. In these cases a fraction has been used, enclosed in parenthesis, in place of the proper digit. In these cases the numerator is the proper number and the denominator shows the order in which the name has been reported. For example, (1/5) indicates that the first child born was the fifth one recorded. This avoids the confusion which would follow any attempt to change numbers after they had been used and carried on for many years.

In presenting the following for publication the compiler wishes it distinctly understood that he is fully aware that the record as it now stands is quite incomplete. The information appearing here has been gathered by checking through the History, page by page, and then through each of the forty-six issues of the Journal, noting all references to the Edward L. line and consolidating all vital statistics which have been published throughout the many years our organization has been functioning. After the completion of this phase of the work, extensive correspondence was undertaken in order to gain such information as is not in our files. To those who have assisted by replying to our letters and furnishing what informa

tion they were able, we are very grateful. As for those who have not replied to our letters, we hope this incomplete record will serve as a stimulus, and bring information from them so that they may be included in our thanks in the next issue.

Little did I realize during Mother's lifetime to what ends I would have to go in order to obtain information which could have been had from her for the asking. There is no time like the present for work of this kind. It is my wish and intention to follow this undertaking to its completion; but to do so it is essential that the cousins co-operate and assist. Don't wait for someone else to send in reports nor hesitate because you think reports have already been made. No harm is done when reports are duplicated. If a marriage is reported twice no one will be accused of bigamy. If a birth is reported twice we won't call it twins. Receipt of unsolicited reports saves much time and a great amount of correspondence. This list shows what information is lacking. IF T H E V I T A L STATISTICS A R E NOT C O M P L E T E I N THIS LIST, OUR RECORD IS I N C O M P L E T E . WE W A N T F U L L INFORMATION. Please let us have it if you can.
