Recognizing Exceptional Rota American Red Cross Volunteers

April 12 - 18 is National Volunteer Week

This April the American Red Cross all over the world celebrates Volunteer Week which takes place from the 12th to 18th of April. This month we not only want to encourage you to get out and volunteer, but also to recognize just a few our outstanding volunteers! We want all of our volunteers to know that without all of your hard work, we could not do it without you! Did you know that volunteers make up 90% of the entire American Red Cross workforce? That’s amazing! There are nearly 400,000 volunteers worldwide as well! With the support of its volunteers, the Red Cross

Q&A with New Office Staff Jon Glenn

turns compassion into action. In fiscal year 2013, Red Cross volunteers helped respond to nearly 70,000 disasters; trained more than 6.5 million people in Red Cross lifesaving skills; collected approximately 5.7 million units of blood from roughly 3.3 million volunteer blood donors; provided nearly 400,000 services to military members, veterans and their families; and reconnected nearly 1,000 families separated by war or disaster around the world. Thank you to all of our volunteers for helping make our world a little better!

Recognizing Exceptional Rota American Red Cross Volunteers

Romina Arbildi Romina has been a volunteer with the American Red Cross since April of 2013. In the two short years as a volunteer Romina has donated over 920 hours to US Naval Station Rota Hospital as an ER nurse. Her kind nature and dedication to serving the community embody the spirit of the American Red Cross.

Madeleine Rydin Since April 0f 2013, Madeleine has been volunteering with the American Red Cross Rota. She is a graduate of the 2014 Dental Assistant Training program and continues to donate her time and skills as a Dental Assistant to the US Naval Hospital Rota Dental Clinic. Madeleine additionally donates her time as a volunteer Health and Safety Instructor. In the last two years, Madeleine has certified over 45 community members in life saving CPR. Madeleine’s dedication to the American Red Cross is making our community safer and we are grateful she is an integral member of our volunteer staff.

Janae Curtice

Janae is one of the American Red Cross Rota’s most active youth volunteers. She donates her time to the “After School Scholars Program” which helps DGF students between first and third grade with their reading and reading comprehension skills. Janae volunteers each week to work with a student in the library. Since joining the American Red Cross in November of 2014, Janae has donated over 40 hours to the program. She is making a difference in the lives of young children and is a role model for her peers.

In March we welcomed a completely brand new office staff here at our Rota American Red Cross

office. Mr. Jon Glenn is our new Station Manager and Mrs. Charnelle Kennedy is our new Office

Assistant. This month we asked each of them to answer a short Q&A so that you our volunteers can

get to know them a little better. Jon and Charnelle are very excited to get to know every one of our

volunteers and to make a positive impact on the community. So please feel free to stop by in the

office and give them a warm Rota welcome!

Meet the New Rota American Red Cross Office Staff

Q&A with new Station Manager, Mr. Jon

Glenn

1. Where do you call home? In short, Atlanta, Georgia is where I would call home, but as a kid I also spent time in Charlotte, NC and Cincinnati, Ohio. Atlanta is where I attended high school, college, where I met my wife, and also where I became an American Red Cross Volunteer. Although, if I could pick one place in the United States to go back to, it would be Washington State due to its

beautiful summers and landscape.

2. What interested you about the American

Red Cross and made you want to volunteer? I graduated college in 2008, just as the economy and job market really started to go south, so I took up volunteering. I did this as a way to gain work experience in the human service non-profit field until I could find a paying gig doing the same type of work. I volunteered for a number of non-profit organizations in the Atlanta area until my wife, Melissa, brought up the American Red Cross as an option. I attended the orientation for new volunteers and quickly realized that the American Red Cross is the organization I had been looking for. Everything from the guiding

principles, to the variety of volunteer opportunities, and the impact made in the community by the many programs and services, I knew I'd be in the American Red Cross for the long haul. Then, after volunteering for about 2 years, I was fortunate enough to gain a paid position with the Service to the Armed Forces division of the American Red Cross. My wife Melissa and I moved to the Seattle area to start a new adventure. What do you like about your job? 3. I love everything about my job, from helping a Service Member in a time of family emergency to working with the most talented and energetic volunteers you will ever find. I really like how the American Red Cross is a volunteer led organization, which allows members of the community to take charge of creating and implementing solutions to challenges in their own community. As a paid staff member, I am here to provide a helping hand to volunteers and assist them in achieving their goals. Tell us a few fun facts about yourself! 4. I am very excited to be in Rota for a number of reasons, one big one being the water! When I was stationed in Washington State, I fell in love with kayaking. However, when we left Washington for Germany, we had to get rid of the kayaks and were not situated very close to the water. I am excited to have the opportunity to get back into it. Kayaking is as close to being athletic as I get, growing up I was very into music and I play the drums for fun when I get the chance.

Q&A with our new Office Assistant

Mrs. Charnelle Kennedy

1. Where do you call home and how do you like living in Spain? I am originally from Jacksonville, Florida and I have been here in Spain for 3 years now, and I love every minute that I have spent here thus far. Spain has granted me a lot of opportunities including working for American Red Cross.

2. What made you interested in working for the American Red Cross? Living stateside I knew whom the American Red Cross was and what they stood for. No matter what, when, or where the American Red Cross was always on the scene. When I first moved here I was very scared to step out especially being in a foreign country and on a new base. That very fear prevented me from learning that we had an American Red Cross here on base. Fast-forward to 2 years later, I met some pretty awesome people that were volunteering with American Red Cross.

3. What made you interested in working for the American Red Cross? I have a very friendly personality and I want to help everyone no matter what his or her situation may be. When I realized that the American Red Cross was hiring, I instantly knew that this was the job for me.

4. What do you love about your job? I LOVE MY JOB!!! I enjoy working with the volunteers, the management, EVERYTHING! This job is so amazing; I cannot possibly choose just one thing as my favorite. However, if I had to choose my number one favorite aspect, it would have to be helping and providing a solution to those in need.

5. Tell us a few fun facts about yourself! I consider myself a fun, happy, southern girl. I love to cook. For me cooking is very calming and a stress reliever. But most of all my family is number one, and they mean the world to me. In everything that I do or set out to accomplish it is always for them. Although I lack the knowledge I wish I had with NFL, I still like to watch it. It’s a very physically demanding sport. It’s so funny to see how people are so dedicated to their teams, including my husband. I also love to travel. Before moving to Spain I did not travel much, but since moving to Spain I have been to several places. I am always looking for the next place to go. I think I am a pretty lucky lady to have joined the American Red Cross team and to be able to share my love for helping others.

Ingredients

1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts ¼ cup whole wheat flour (all purpose will

work, too) ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon lemon pepper seasoning 1 cup chopped asparagus 2 lemons, sliced

Directions 1. Cover the chicken breasts with plastic

wrap and pound until each pieces is about a ¾ of an inch thick. Place the flour and salt in a shallow dish and gently toss each chicken breast in the dish to coat. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium high heat; add the chicken and saute or 3-5 minutes on each side, until

golden brown, sprinkling each side with the lemon pepper directly in the pan.

2. When the chicken is cooked through, transfer to a plate. Add the lemon slices and chopped asparagus to the pan. Make sure the lemon slices are on the bottom so that they caramelize and pick up the browned bits left in the pan from the chicken and butter.

3. When the asparagus is done and the lemons are golden brown, add the chicken back to the pan and rearrange everything (lemons on top) so it looks nice for serving.

Get back on track: Focus on adding more fruits and vegetables to your meals and snacks. Load your plate with nutritious foods so there will be less room for the highly processed, high-fat, high-sodium foods.

Lack of sleep may be dangerous to your health and safety.

Get back on track: Set limits to your day so you can get the rest your body needs. If you have trouble sleeping, follow a consistent bedtime continuous

routine and avoid caffeine late in the day. The effects of caffeine may last longer than you think. It takes about six hours for just half of the caffeine consumed to leave your body. Anxiety and stress can take a toll on your body, whether it’s a major crisis or small issues over time. Get back on track: Try a yoga class or new exercise routine, read a book or call a friend to clear your mind. If you need help dealing with anxiety or stress, talk to your doctor. Smoking can do serious damage to your health. Get back on track: The benefits of stopping smoking begin just 20 minutes after you quit.3 Start here for tools to help you quit: smokefree.gov.

Just one week of insufficient sleep alters our genes.

You know that filling up on junk food, sleep deprivation, lack of exercise and other bad habits can be toxic to your health. If you’re feeling run-down or stressed out, maybe it’s time to get back on track. Getting rid of the toxic things in your life can help you feel better. Healthy lifestyle choices may also help you live longer and prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Poor nutrition weighs you down and zaps your energy.
