Thank you for joining us today!

We’re glad you’ve joined us today. For thousands of years people have joined together to worship and to be encouraged by the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our prayer today is that you, like so many others, might know the deep and never failing love God has for you.

If you are a visitor, take your time to listen, to explore, and to learn more about us. You can find more information about us online at apostlesonline.org.

Special Instruction for the Eucharist

In light of COVID-19, "coronavirus," Archbishop Foley has asked us to adjust how Communion is distributed. So, we will be administering bread only in our Eucharistic services. Receiving the bread only is considered by the Church as receiving the whole of communion.

It is especially important during this time to wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your face, cough into your elbow, and abstain from physical contact with others.

Finally, please continue to pray for those who are infected and for the outbreak to be quelled.

*For our service today we will be using text from the ACNA 2019 BCP. All scripture passages are taken from the English Standard Version (Crossway Bibles. (2007).  ESV: Study Bible: English standard version. Wheaton, Ill: Crossway Bibles.)

Welcome

Processional Hymn Holy Spirit, Ever Living

Holy Spirit, ever living as the Church’s very life; Holy Spirit, ever striving through her in a ceaseless strife; Holy Spirit, ever forming in the Church the mind of Christ; Thee we praise with endless worship For thy fruits and gifts unpriced.

Holy Spirit, ever working through the Church’s ministry; Quickening, strengthening and absolving, Setting captive sinners free; Holy Spirit, ever binding age to age, and soul to soul, In a fellowship unending thee we worship and extol.

Words: Timothy Rees Music: Abbot’s Leigh, Cyril Vincent Taylor

The Acclamation

The Celebrant will say Celebrant: Blessed be God; the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

The Prayer of Preparation

The Celebrant prays Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Law

Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Lord, have mercy upon us and write both these your laws in our hearts.

The Gloria (sung)

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen.

The Collect of the Day Celebrant: The Lord be with you, People: And with your spirit. Celebrant: Let us pray.

Almighty God, on this day, through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, you revealed the way of eternal life to every race and nation: Pour out this gift anew, that by the preaching of the Gospel your salvation may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Readings from Holy Scripture

The First Lesson Acts 2:1-11

1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Psalm Psalm 104:25-32

25 O LORD, how manifold are your ‘works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your ‘creatures. 26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to ‘number, * creatures both small and ‘great. 27 There move the ships, and there is that Lev’iathan, * which you have made for the ‘sport of it. 28 All of them look to ‘you * to give them their food in due ‘season. 29 You give it to them; they ‘gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good ‘things. 30 You hide your face, and they are ‘terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their ‘dust. 31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are cre’ated; * and so you renew the face of the ‘earth. 32 May the glory of the LORD endure for ‘ever; * may the LORD rejoice in all his ‘works.

Gloria Glory be to the Father and to the ’Son *

And to the Holy ’Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever ‘shall be * World without end, A’men.

The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 12:4-13

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Reading

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John. People: Glory to You, Lord Christ. John 20:19-23

20:19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, Lord Christ.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one, holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Almighty and immortal God, giver of life and health: We implore your mercy for all those affected by the coronavirus, that by your blessing upon them and upon those who minister to them with your healing gifts, they may be restored to health of body and mind, according to your gracious will, and may give thanks to you in your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

Confession of Sin The Deacon says Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God.

A pause for self-examination may be observed. All then say this General Confession Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant declares God’s forgiveness Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Comfortable Words

The Celebrant then says Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to Him. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

The Peace

All standing, the Celebrant says to the people The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And with your spirit.

The Service of the Table

Offertory Hymn Come Holy Ghost

Come Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, And lighten with celestial fire; Thou the anointing Spirit art, Who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Thy blessed unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love; Enable with perpetual light The dullness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soiled face With the abundance of Thy grace; Keep far our foes, give peace at home; Where Thou art guide no ill can come.

The Great Thanksgiving

The people remain standing. The Celebrant says

The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord; according to whose most true promise, the Holy Spirit came down from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth, giving them boldness and fervent zeal constantly to preach the Gospel to all nations; by which we have been brought out of darkness and error into the clear light and true knowledge of you, and of your Son Jesus Christ.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Celebrant and People (sung) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

16

Page 17: The Holy Eucharistapostles-anglican-aac.s3.amazonaws.com/virtual-sermons-2020/Apo… · Almighty God, on this day, through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, you revealed the way

Then the Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts.

17

Page 18: The Holy Eucharistapostles-anglican-aac.s3.amazonaws.com/virtual-sermons-2020/Apo… · Almighty God, on this day, through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, you revealed the way

Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy sacrament, and be made one body with him, so that he may dwell in us and we in him. And bring us with all your saints into the fullness of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. AMEN.

And now as our Savior Jesus Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Facing the people, the Celebrant says Alleluia! Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!

The Presentation of the Gifts

The Celebrant then says The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
