Jesus, Mary and JosephWhat a Fam- ily! Yet we ought to avoid the temptation of thinking that the Holy Family had a life that was perfect. Remember the hardships both Mary and Joseph faced: that Joseph was not the father of this baby, but was to care for Mary and the child as though he were his son, and that Mary, as a very young woman, was to have this awesome responsibility of being the Mother to God. They had to journey a great distance by foot and donkey, only to find that there was no place like Women’s and Babies’ Hospital in Bethlehem. The only place to give birth to Emmanuel was a stable for animals. Then, the king tried to kill the baby so they fled to Egypt to escape. That does not sound like the perfect family setting that any of us would choose. Yet what makes the Holy Family our inspiration and our hope is their example of faith and obedience in the Lord and their love and respect for each other. When God is truly the center of our lives and our homes, and when we respect, love and care for each member of the family, then we are able to endure all kinds of trials and difficulties. Notice that in all of Scripture, we hear no word uttered by Saint Joseph, yet he protected and guided the Holy Family in the ways of the LORD. In the homily for the Mass of the Inauguration of his papacy on the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Pope Francis highlighted this role of protector: “How does Joseph exercise his role as protector? Discreetly, humbly and silently, but with an unfailing presence and utter fidelity, even when he finds it hard to understand. From the time of his betrothal to Mary until the finding of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem, he is there at every mo- ment with loving care. As the spouse of Mary, he is at her side in good times and bad, on the journey to Bethlehem for the census and in the anxious and joyful hours when she gave birth; amid the drama of the flight into Egypt and during the frantic search for their child in the Temple; and later in the day-to-day life of the home of Nazareth, in the workshop where he taught his trade to Jesus. How does Joseph respond to his calling to be the protector of Mary, Jesus and the Church? By being constantly attentive to God, open to the signs of God’s presence and receptive to God’s plans, and not simply to his own . . . Joseph is a “protector” be- cause he is able to hear God’s voice and be guided by his will; and for this reason he is all the more sen- sitive to the persons entrusted to his safekeeping. He can look at things realistically, he is in touch with his surroundings, he can make truly wise decisions. In him, dear friends, we learn how to respond to God’s call, readily and willingly.” This is what Saint Joseph’s and our society needs from our menfrom our husbands, fathers, grandfathers, un- cles and sons. We need men who quietly, but faithfully and obediently live the will of God before all other considera- tions. The Church continues to need men who put their Faith into action every day without counting the cost. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph

Jesus, Mary and Joseph:

The Holy Family

Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s,

As we continue this Octave of Christmas, rejoicing that the Baby of Bethlehem is Emmanuel, for God has come in our human nature to save us, we celebrate today the Feast of the Holy Family. Jesus, Mary and Joseph—What a Fam-ily! Yet we ought to avoid the temptation of thinking that the Holy Family had a life that was perfect.

Remember the hardships both Mary and Joseph faced:

that Joseph was not the father of this baby, but was to care for Mary and the child as though he were his son, and that Mary, as a very young woman, was to have this awesome responsibility of being the Mother to God.

Yet what makes the Holy Family our inspiration and our

hope is their example of faith and obedience in the Lord and their love and respect for each other. When God is truly the center of our lives and our homes, and when we respect, love and care for each member of the family, then we are able to endure all kinds of trials and difficulties.

As we are about to begin 2015, let us re-commit our-

selves to shaping our family life by our Faith in the Most Blessed Trinity and the example of the Holy Family. May Saint Joseph not just be the name of our parish church, but truly be an example to all of us, but particularly to all the men and boys of the parish.

Notice that in all of Scripture, we hear no word uttered

by Saint Joseph, yet he protected and guided the Holy Family in the ways of the LORD. In the homily for the Mass

of the Inauguration of his papacy on the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Pope Francis highlighted this role of protector:

“How does Joseph exercise his role as protector? Discreetly, humbly and silently, but with an unfailing presence and utter fidelity, even when he finds it hard to understand. From the time of his betrothal to Mary until the finding of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem, he is there at every mo-ment with loving care.

By being constantly attentive to God, open to the signs of God’s presence and receptive to God’s plans, and not simply to his own . . . Joseph is a “protector” be-cause he is able to hear God’s voice and be guided by his will; and for this reason he is all the more sen-sitive to the persons entrusted to his safekeeping. He can look at things realistically, he is in touch with his surroundings, he can make truly wise decisions. In him, dear friends, we learn how to respond to God’s call, readily and willingly.”

This is what Saint Joseph’s and our society needs from

our men—from our husbands, fathers, grandfathers, un-cles and sons. We need men who quietly, but faithfully and obediently live the will of God before all other considera-tions. The Church continues to need men who put their Faith into action every day without counting the cost. As the men of our parish are strong in their own faith, then faith grows strongly in our families. Saint Joseph, pray for us and our families in 2015.

In the Love of Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

Fr. Allan F. Wolfe

Pope Francis proclaimed 2015 a Year of Consecrated Life, starting on the First Sun-day of Advent, the weekend of November 29, 2014, and ending on February 2, 2016, the feast of the Presentation of the Lord and the World Day of Consecrated Life. The year also marks the 50th anniversary of Perfectae Caritatis, a decree on religious life, and Lumen Gentium, the Second Vatican Council’s constitution on the Church. Its purpose, as stated by the Vatican is to “make a grateful remembrance of the recent past” while embracing “the future with hope.” “I am counting on you to ‘wake up the world,’ since the distinctive sign of consecrated life is prophecy,” the Pope said in a letter to religious for the Year of Consecrated Life. “This is the priority that is needed right now.” The awakening, he explained, is for all Christians to live the Good News of

salvation as a joyful, life-transforming event, which consecrated persons profoundly model by leaving everything to follow Christ. “Radical evangelical living is not only for religious,” the Pope wrote. “It is demanded of everyone. But religious fo llow the Lord in a special way, in a prophetic way.” The Year of Consecrated Life has three aims, the Pope continued: to look to the past with gratitude, to live the present with passion and to embrace the future with hope

(National Catholic Register)

Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life

O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical

counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these coura-

geous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of

ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great

price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with

you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (usccb)
